- Episode Guide - The Real World I (New York)
- Version 1.0 July 29, 1994
-
-
- How This Guide Is Arranged
-
- A synopsis for each episode is provided. The three digit episode
- number uniquely identifies each episode. The "1" indicates the
- first season with the next two numbers identifying the episode for
- that season. Each synopsis is further divided into the three
- segments created by the two commercial breaks. Because the number
- of commercials varies with each showing, it is not possible to
- provide an exact notation of each scene's position within the
- show, but they are listed in order of actual appearance within
- each segment.
-
- A note about the episode titles: Titles were chosen to reflect
- the general theme of the show and to provide an easy way to refer
- to each episode in a more personal way than episode numbers alone
- will allow. They are not "official" in any sense and appear
- nowhere except this guide.
-
- Filming for the first season of The Real World ran from February
- 16, 1992 through May 18, 1992.
-
- The loft was located at 565 Broadway, # 2C
-
-
- Episode # 101 - Welcome to The Real World
- Original Air Date: May 21, 1992
-
- Segment # 1 - Our introduction to The Real World shows Eric
- sitting in front of the now famous fish tank talking about how he
- can't believe this is actually going to happen.
-
- After the opening sequence, we meet Julie before she departs
- Birmingham. We find out her dad wants her to be a computer
- operator but she wants to be a dancer. We see her at church and
- get a look at her house. She and her father argue before he takes
- her to the airport.
-
- After Julie arrives in New York, a friendly cabby warns her about
- all the dangers of the big city. Meanwhile, back at the apartment
- everyone starts to arrive; first Becky, then Kevin, Norman and his
- dog, Heather, Andre, and Julie. Each one describes him or
- herself.
-
- It's about at this point that the now famous "do you sell drugs"
- line comes out of Julie's mouth when Heather's beeper goes off.
-
- Segment # 2 - Heather's not too happy about the beeper remark.
- Julie insists she's not a racist and was just clowning around.
- Heather makes her predictions about what things will be like over
- the next 3 months. The sleeping arrangements get decided with
- Kevin and Eric deciding to share space. Heather and Andre end up
- in the same room.
-
- The producers have conveniently placed a book on love and sex in
- the house and the roomies read each other questions. Eric talks
- about his first kiss. We get to know Becky a little better as she
- calls her mother and practices her music and later performs.
-
- Segment # 3 - Julie and the others have an encounter with a
- malfunctioning NYC subway train. Julie wants her money back which
- the more experienced city dwellers find amusing. We see the group
- out on the town eating dinner and talking about racism.
-
- Kevin and Norman both offer their opinions of Julie who we next
- see talking to some guys on motorcycles. Julie decides to go on a
- ride with one of them as the others look on in disbelief.
-
-
- Episode # 102 - Everyone Has Their Price
- Original Air Date: May 21, 1992
-
- Segment # 1 - Eric talks about doing commercials and falling in
- "lust." He shows his modeling book to Julie and Becky. We see
- Eric's appearance with Faith Daniels as a result of his commercial
- for Jovan musk cologne. The whole group watches Eric on tv.
-
- Heather talks about her music and Eric elaborates on the
- importance of "image." Becky offers the opinion to the camera
- that Julie and Eric are attracted to each other.
-
- Segment # 2 - We see more of Heather in the studio working on her
- record and then see that she and Julie are becoming friends.
- Heather has decided to help Julie adjust to the big city. Later,
- the two of them are taking Gouda for a walk, though it turns out
- to be more of Gouda taking Heather for a "drag." Heather shares a
- picture of her second day of Kindergarten.
-
- Heather has decided as part of her education program for Julie
- that she's going to create a dictionary for her to help Julie
- understand slang. Eric is on the phone to his special love,
- Missy. A bit later Eric talks about Julie coming into his bedroom
- and suggesting they go out for pancakes with strawberries.
-
- Segment # 3 - Julie goes to a hip-hop dance class. Eric goes
- along though he's real skeptical at first. He finally joins in.

- Eric talks about the layout he did for a fitness magazine with
- Karen and we get to watch the photo shoot. Andre goes to the
- band's (Reigndance) house in New Jersey. Apparently the practice
- is a little too loud for the neighbors and the police show up.
-
- Segment # 2 - There's no real confrontation, the cops just ask
- them to quiet it down. Eric hangs out with Karen. Back at home

- to cook dinner for the house. In one of the few mentions ever
- made of television, the house members compare themselves to the
- cast of Gilligan's Island. Norman reads some poetry. Heather,

- his bi-sexuality.
-
- Segment # 3 - We see several of the gang helping Norman move one

- kicking around questions and answers. Norman goes to a crazy
- party and Becky does her Madonna imitation.

- who is to blame. We get our first view of a "house meeting" only
- when it begins Kevin is not even there. Mainly what we see is
- Eric griping about everything. Kevin finally shows up and notices
- that everyone is wearing sunglasses as if to hide from looking at
- people directly. Becky proposes a house curfew and comments on
- the differences that come with being a little older.
-
- There's quite a discussion about the phone and the difficulty
- everyone has in getting access to the only line and getting their
- messages when they are out. There's also a discussion about house
- guests. Eric had invited his sister to crash at the loft and
- Kevin took great offense to this furthering the tension between
- the two of them.
-
- Segment # 3 - Kevin writes Eric a letter. Everyone else reads it.
- Julie even reads it aloud to Heather. Eric talks to Becky and

- community service.
-

- life, while Kevin talks about his own run-ins with the law. Kevin

- Square Garden to a Pistons and Nicks basketball game where Eric's

- years old.
-
- In another house meeting the group talks about the importance of
- getting to know each other. There is some interest expressed in

-
- We see the gang playing in the snow and doing the grocery
- shopping. Norman is upset because the VCR has failed to record
- his favorite show, Star Trek.
-
- The group dinner idea isn't working out very well. Kevin doesn't
- even show up after offering to cook the meal. The rest of the
- house decides to play a joke on Kevin
-
- Segment # 3 - Kevin, we learn, is at a poetry reading. Meanwhile,
- everyone in the house decides to switch roles as an April Fool's
- joke on Kevin. The group wisely videotapes their plotting so that

- again to communicate with each other, Julie even offering to take

- camera" rather than behind it.
