  5. ¹A graffiti artist who became a hero to
  6. his  teenage  followers, but America's
  7. most  brazen  vandal to his elders was
  8. sentenced  to  a  year  in  prison and
  9. ordered to do 1,560 hours of community
  10. service cleaning up his handiwork.

  12. Daniel  Ramos,  18, was also forbidden
  13. by  a  Los  Angeles  court  to possess
  14. spray  paint  or felt-tip markers, and
  15. he  may  be  forced to pay for some of
  16. the  damage  he  caused.   Ramos,  who
  17. painted under the nickname "Chaka", is
  18. described   as   the   most   prolific
  19. graffiti  artist in the United States.
  20. He  sprayed  10,000  Southern  Pacific
  21. railcars,  walls,  traffic  lights and
  22. free  ways  during  an extended binge,
  23. causing  damage put at up to $500,000.
  24. His  signature  was  a  familiar sight
  25. around  Los  Angeles and he acquired a
  26. keen  following among younger graffiti
  27. artists,   who   considered   him  the
  28. maestro.

  30. The  skill of the graffiti artist lies
  31. as   much  in  his  ability  to  avoid
  32. capture,  and  in  selecting dangerous
  33. sites,  as  in  his  artistic prowess.
  34. Ramos's  luck  ran  out  when  he  was
  35. arrested  while  decorating  a traffic
  36. light.    As  he  was  handcuffed,  he
  37. shouted:  "I am the famous Chaka".  He
  38. derived the nickname from an urchin in
  39. a  1970s children's television series,
  40. "Land  of  the  Lost".   Ramos did not
  41. contest  10  counts  of vandalism, and
  42. was  excused  38  other  charges after
  43. ¶çedf,888,0f0,,aaf,f8f,ff0,fff¹plea  bargaining.   Under Los Angeles
  44. probation  laws he will serve only 155
  45. days   of  his  sentence,  and  having
  46. already  spent  that  long  in jail on
  47. remand  he  is  likely  released.   Mr
  48. James   Hahn,  the  Los  Angeles  city
  49. attorney, said:  "Ramos concentrated a
  50. lot  of effort on vandalising railroad
  51. cars,   apparently  because  they  are
  52. mobile and carried his tag (signature)
  53. throughout    the   Southern   Pacific
  54. Railroad  network.   The extent of his
  55. property  damage  made  this the worst
  56. case  of  graffiti  vandalism  we have
  57. heard of anywhere in the nation".

  59. Mr   Robert   Sandoval,   Los  Angeles
  60. Municipal      Court     Commissioner,
  61. scheduled  a  hearing for next year to
  62. determine  the extent of the vandalism
  63. and to assess whether Ramos is capable
  64. of   paying  compensation.   Mr  Lioyd
  65. Handler,   Ramos's  lawyer,  said  his
  66. client  acknowledged  that his days as
  67. "the famous Chaka" were at an end.
