  16. Guastalla c07 did  not  object  to  being
  17. called  an  aristocrat.   He  couldn't
  18. help   thinking   of  his  (imaginary)
  19. ancestors.  In fact, his past life had
  20. been   a   trail   of   disasters  and
  21. frustrations  about  which  he did not
  22. enjoy   talking   and   was   somewhat
  23. reticent.   Lately,  however,  he  had
  24. discovered a resource so far unused in
  25. his rather distinguished name: c09 Sforza
  26. Visconti di Guastallac07.

  28. On signing into a hotel one day he was
  29. addressed  by  a very military-looking
  30. gentleman   who   said:    'f4Excuse  my
  31. asking,  but  I could not avoid myself
  32. from   noticing   your   name  in  the
  33. register.  Are you any relation to the
  34. Sforza   Visconti   di   Guastalla  of
  35. Parma?f1'  c09Giovanni Robertoc07 was about to
  36. deny  being related to those high-born
  37. people  when  for some reason he could
  38. never  explain  later,  he  decided to
  39. lie.    'f4Yes,   I   amf1',  he  replied.
  40. 'f4Forgive  my asking, but what business
  41. is  it of yours?f1' c09Giovanni Roberto c07was
  42. surprised  at  his  own audacity.  The
  43. military  man  was  unperturbed.  'f4Old
  44. Lucrezio used to be in Somalia with me
  45. just  before  the war.  You're not his
  46. son, are you?f1'

  49. c07replied  beginning  to  enjoy himself.
  50. The chance of being found out was very
  51. little   and  anyway  he  was  risking
  52. nothing  for  telling  such a lie.  He
  53. went  on talking and invented a career
  54. in  the  Army  in  Somalia  and then a
  55. farming  in the Toscana's countryside,
  56. after  a remarkable service during the
  57. war.

  59. He  talked  about  taking  part in big
  60. battles  and  the  art of farming on a
  61. large  scale.   Later c09Giovanni Roberto
  62. c07was  much  relieved  to  hear that his
  63. supposed uncle had died long before.

  65. The  consequence  of  the conversation
  66. was   an   invitation  to  dinner  and
  67. introductions   to   the   influential
  68. friends of the military gentleman.  By
  69. meeting  them he discovered in himself
  70. a  talent  of  telling  tales.  People
  71. wanted to hear them.  Soon he got used
  72. to  having invitations to dinner every
  73. night.  c09Giovanni Robertoc07 often enjoyed
  74. talking  about his imaginary old times
  75. at  an  exclusive club to which he was
  76. elected.   People thought he was a man
  77. worth knowing.

  80. avoid from smiling to himself.  He had
  81. discovered that one had to talk to the
  82. right  people  in the right places and
  83. one could go anywhere.  He was at last
  84. a man of success.
