  2.               Why use Windows?
  3.  
  4. 1. Windows is a Graphical User Interface
  5. (GUI).  It shows small pictures representing
  6. programs or data, called icons. You can
  7. select any of these icons and start the
  8. program or operate on the data by simply
  9. pressing a button.  Many Windows operations
  10. are easier to learn than their DOS-based
  11. equivalents.  The GUI also reduces typing,
  12. making the computer easier to operate for
  13. non-typists.

  15. 2. Windows is a memory manager.  If you have
  16. 2 megabytes or more of RAM, Windows can run
  17. very large programs which take full
  18. advantage of this RAM.  Some Windows
  19. programs have more features and run faster
  20. than equivalent DOS-based programs.

  22. 3. Windows can run several programs at one
  23. time.  Data such as text or pictures can be
  24. moved from one program to another almost
  25. immediately. For instance, in the middle of
  26. writing a letter, you can start a paint
  27. program and draw a picture, then insert the
  28. picture into the letter. When done, you can
  29. print the letter, with the picture, onto
  30. paper.

  32. 4. Windows standardizes video, input and
  33. printer support. When you get a new program
  34. for DOS, you sometimes have to to set it up,
  35. a menu-driven process involving telling the
  36. new program what type of monitor, mouse and
  37. printer you have.  Then, you have to hope
  38. that the program supports your specific brand
  39. of video system, printer and mouse. This is
  40. all done automatically by Windows.

  42. 5. Windows standardizes the way programs are
  43. operated. Once you know how to access help,
  44. files, change fonts and colors, and run one
  45. Windows program, you'll know the same basics
  46. for all Windows programs.

  48. 6. The point-and-click, drag-and-drop,
  49. multiple-programs-at-one-time style of
  50. Windows is becoming the modern way in which
  51. computers are operated.  This is similar to
  52. the way MacIntosh and many other types of
  53. computers look and feel. If you know
  54. Windows, you can run other systems almost
  55. instinctively.
