- The "command line" is what you
- type at the "DOS prompt"
- commanding your computer to do
- something. The most common
- command is to start a program.
- Once a program starts, the DOS
- prompt generally disappears and
- the computer is controlled by
- the program.
- When you quit a program, the
- DOS prompt returns, waiting for
- your next command.
- To start a program, you type
- it's file name. For instance,
- if you have a word processing
- program in a file called WP.EXE,
- you can type WP.EXE, press the
- [Enter] key, then your word
- processing program takes over
- control of the computer. Files

- can start in this way end with
- .BAT, .COM or .EXE. It is not
- necessary to type the extension
- with a program file name. You
- could also type WP and press
- [Enter] to start the program.
- In addition to typing a
- program file name, you can also
- type instructions which DOS can
- perform by itself. These are
- mostly file handling operations,
- include copy, del (delete), Ren
- (rename), and dir (directory)
- which shows a list of the files
- on a disk.
- The command line is not case
- sensitive, meaning Kittycat,
- kITTyCAt, and KITTYCAT, are all
- the same.
