  23. As soon as you turn the computer on
  24. the BIOS chips come to life. BIOS
  25. stands for Basic Input Output
  26. System.  The computer has one or
  27. more of these ROM (Read Only
  28. Memory) chips.  The BIOS is the
  29. first step in telling the computer
  30. who it is.  The Central Processing
  31. Unit (CPU chip) is the main
  32. thinking part of the computer, but
  33. so far, it has no thoughts to think
  34. about.  The BIOS hooks it up to
  35. other parts, places where thoughts
  36. can be stored.  The BIOS tells it
  37. how to talk with the disk drives,
  38. the RAM (Random Access Memory), the
  39. keyboard and the monitor.
