  8. Version 1.0a is an interim release of Chalkboard Math for
  9. Windows, in which reported problems with version 1.0 have
  10. been corrected.

  13. INTRODUCTION
  14. ------------
  15. Chalkboard Math for Windows is a fun, easy-to-use math tutor
  16. program that teaches and enhances elementary math skills.  It
  17. can be used by a single child or by a child and an adult.
  18.  
  19. The program presents the player with a blank chalkboard area
  20. in which elementary math problems are drawn, answered, and
  21. assessed.
  22.  
  23. Progress through a given Chalkboard Math session is measured
  24. via a Scoring Mode option, in which correct answers are
  25. tracked and difficulty levels are automatically adjusted.

  28. PROGRAM FILES
  29. ------- -----
  30. The Chalkboard Math package consists of four files:
  31.  
  32. CBMATH.EXE
  33.     The executable program file.
  34.     CBMATH.EXE (2/1/92) is the Shareware "S" version.
  35.     CBMATH.EXE (2/10/92) is the Registered version.

  37. CBMATH.INI
  38.     The initialization file, used for recording the
  39.     Chalkboard Math high-scores Honor Roll.
  40.  
  41. CBMATH.HLP
  42.     The Windows Help file, used for providing
  43.     comprehensive run-time help for Chalkboard Math
  44.     users.  A registration form is included in the
  45.     Help file; both it and any other Help topic may
  46.     be easily printed through the Windows Help menu
  47.     bar "File/Print Topic" command.
  48.  
  49. CBMATH.TXT
  50.     This file, containing program information, notes,
  51.     general instructions, and an ASCII text format
  52.     registration form (see end of file).

  55. PROGRAM NOTES
  56. ------- -----
  57. Chalkboard Math for Windows runs within the Microsoft
  58. Windows environment (versions 3.0 or higher), and
  59. requires the following:
  60.  
  61.     * A Windows-compatible mouse or other pointing
  62.       device.
  63.  
  64.     * VGA graphics capability (640x480) or higher.
  65.       CGA- or EGA-equipped systems do not provide
  66.       sufficient resolution for the Chalkboard Math
  67.       display.
  68.  
  69. Chalkboard Math runs in 16-color mode, but will run acceptably
  70. on monochrome or black & white VGA systems.  The program will
  71. run in any Windows 3.0+ operating mode.

  74. CHALKBOARD MATH SETUP
  75. ---------- ---- -----
  76. Chalkboard Math requires no configuration or setup.  Although
  77. it can be run from a floppy disk, we strongly recommend
  78. installation to a hard disk.

  81. INSTALLATION GUIDELINES
  82. ------------ ----------
  83. 1. We recommend making a backup copy of your program disk.
  84.    Keep the master copy in a safe place and use the backup
  85.    disk for program installation.
  86.  
  87. 2. Copy the program files (CBMATH.EXE, CBMATH.INI, and
  88.    CBMATH.HLP) from your master disk to an appropriate
  89.    subdirectory on your hard disk (e.g., C:\CBMATH).
  90.  
  91.    There are no hidden files or "key" files on the program
  92.    disk, so the file copying process can be accomplished
  93.    with the DOS "COPY" command or, if you prefer, through
  94.    the Windows File Manager File/Copy command.
  95.  
  96.    This file, CBMATH.TXT, is not required in order to run
  97.    Chalkboard Math.  However, the three program files
  98.    (CBMATH.EXE, CBMATH.INI, and CBMATH.HLP) are required,
  99.    and must all reside in the same directory in order for
  100.    Chalkboard Math to work properly.
  101.  
  102. 3. You may use the "Windows Setup" utility to setup a
  103.    program item (icon) for Chalkboard Math.  Windows Setup
  104.    will recognize the CBMATH.EXE file and assign its icon
  105.    to a program group for you.
  106.  
  107.    or...

  109.    You may assign a program item icon to Chalkboard Math
  110.    manually, through the File/New commands in Program Manager.
  111.  
  112.    Always make sure that the correct path and filename
  113.    (e.g., "C:\CBMATH\CBMATH.EXE") is assigned to the CBMath
  114.    program item.  The "Browse" control in the Program Item
  115.    dialog box will make it easy to locate and assign the
  116.    correct path and filename.
  117.  
  118. 4. If installed correctly, Chalkboard Math should load from
  119.    the Program Manager screen when the CBMath icon is
  120.    double-clicked (or from File Manager when the Chalkboard
  121.    Math listing is selected with "Run" or double-clicked).

  124. USING CHALKBOARD MATH
  125. ----- ---------- ----
  126. Chalkboard Math for Windows was designed to be fun and easy to
  127. use -- educational software that "feels" like a game to the
  128. user, yet sharpens elementary math skills through five different
  129. levels of difficulty.
  130.  
  131. Although Chalkboard Math can and should be used by children to 
  132. sharpen math skills on their own, the program is even more
  133. valuable when used by an adult and child together.
  134.  
  135. Help is available at any time through the Chalkboard Math menu
  136. bar "Help/Index..." command.  You can directly access any Help
  137. topic through the Index, or browse from topic to topic.  Help
  138. topics may be printed through the Windows Help menu bar
  139. "File/Print Topic" command.

  142. GETTING STARTED
  143. ------- -------
  144. To begin, the player moves the mouse pointer to one of the
  145. four Math Mode buttons located along the left side of the
  146. window display.  These buttons select which type of problem
  147. the program will draw onto the chalkboard area (addition,
  148. subtraction, multiplication, or division).
  149.  
  150. The desired mode is selected with a click of the left mouse
  151. button.  A problem is then drawn on the chalkboard, and the
  152. player is given two attempts to provide the correct answer.
  153.  
  154. Answers are entered by clicking the numbered buttons (0-9)
  155. and are drawn from left to right -- as the numbered buttons
  156. are "pushed" -- in the appropriate areas of the chalkboard.
  157.  
  158. If a mistake is made while entering an answer, clicking the
  159. "BACK" button will erase the answer and allow the player to
  160. to start over.
  161.  
  162. When the answer is entered as desired, click the "GO" button
  163. to check the results.
  164.  
  165. Comments and score updates are given in the large status window
  166. just under the chalkboard.  If the answers on both the first
  167. and second attempts are incorrect, the answer to the problem
  168. is also provided in the status window.

  171. FEATURES

  173.     New Session
  174.     --- -------
  175.     The New Session command clears the chalkboard area,
  176.     resets all scores to zero, and allows the player to
  177.     restart a Chalkboard Math session.
  178.  
  179.     This command is available through the menu bar
  180.     "File/New Session" command.

  183.     Honor Roll
  184.     ----- ----
  185.     The current top five scores, as recorded by Chalkboard
  186.     Math, may be viewed by selecting the menu bar
  187.     "File/Honor Roll" command.

  190.     Scoring Mode
  191.     ------- ----
  192.     The Scoring Mode feature can be toggled on and off
  193.     through the menu bar "Options/Scoring Mode" command.

  196.     Scoring Mode Enabled
  197.     ------- ---- -------
  198.     With Scoring Mode enabled (indicated by a checkmark
  199.     -- the default), the program allows the user a
  200.     total of 50 problems in a given session.  The
  201.     program will keep a running score of the number of
  202.     correct answers given.
  203.  
  204.     A higher score is awarded when the problem is
  205.     correctly answered on the first attempts.  Higher
  206.     scores are also awarded at the higher difficulty
  207.     levels.
  208.  
  209.     Chalkboard Math maintains a record of the top five
  210.     scores.  The program will prompt the user for his or
  211.     her name if their score ranks in the top five, and
  212.     will record their name and score in the Chalkboard
  213.     Math Honor Roll.

  215.  
  216.     Scoring Mode Disabled
  217.     ------- ---- --------
  218.     With Scoring Mode disabled, the program does not
  219.     track the number of correct answers given, and does
  220.     not offer the player the option to automatically
  221.     advance to the higher difficulty levels.  However,
  222.     the player may manually select any difficulty level
  223.     in which to practice.
  224.  
  225.     Note:  Regardless of the Scoring Mode setting, only
  226.     two answer attempts are allowed per problem.

  228.  
  229.     Sound Effects Control
  230.     ----- ------- -------
  231.     The sound effects feature can be toggled on and off
  232.     from the menu bar "Options/Sound Effects" command.
  233.

  235.     Difficulty Level Control
  236.     ---------- ----- -------
  237.     The current difficulty level, ranging from 1 to 5,
  238.     can be selected from the menu bar "Options/Difficulty
  239.     Level" command.  Each of the five levels offer
  240.     successively more challenging problems to solve, and
  241.     higher scores awarded for correct answers.
  242.  
  243.     The Auto-Advance option may be used to automatically
  244.     increase the difficulty level when 10 correct answers
  245.     are recorded at the current level.
  246.  
  247.     Blue stars "thumb-tacked" to the top of the chalkboard
  248.     frame represent the current difficulty level.
  249.  
  250.     Note:  Chalkboard Math always defaults to the lowest
  251.     difficulty level (Level 1).

  254.     Auto-Advance (Level)
  255.     ------------ -------
  256.     The Auto-Advance option automatically increases the
  257.     Chalkboard Math difficulty level when 10 problems
  258.     have been correctly answered at the current level.

  260.     This command is available through the menu bar
  261.     "Options/Auto-Advance" command.
  262.  
  263.     Chalkboard Math may be run with Scoring Mode enabled
  264.     (turned on) and Auto-Advance disabled (turned off),
  265.     allowing the player to compete for a high score
  266.     without having the difficulty levels adjusted during
  267.     play.

  269.     The Auto-Advance option is only available when Scoring
  270.     Mode is enabled.

  273.     Help System
  274.     ---- ------
  275.     Comprehensive run-time help for Chalkboard Math users
  276.     is provided through the menu bar "Help/Contents"
  277.     command.

  279.     You may select specific topics to read, or browse from
  280.     topic to topic.

  283. PRODUCT REGISTRATION
  284. ------- ------------
  285. Chalkboard Math for Windows is shareware, not freeware.
  286.  
  287. Product registration is necessary if companies like ours are
  288. to continue providing quality software for the shareware
  289. marketplace.

  291. Registered users receive the registered version of this
  292. product (available in 3.5" or 5.25" disk formats).
  293. Registration also entitles the user to advance information
  294. on upcoming Pegasus Development products (including upgrades
  295. to Chalkboard Math) -- as well as other new titles in our
  296. expanding product line.

  298. The registration fee for this product is $16.00 (U.S.).
