  2. Welcome to the 24 Hours in Cyberspace CD-ROM
  3.  
  4. This CD-ROM contains the complete 24 Hours in Cyberspace
  5. World Wide Web site, a "digital time capsule" that includes
  6. more than 160 stories about how cyberspace is having an
  7. impact on the lives of people all over the world. Also on
  8. this CD-ROM is a 12-minute QuickTime(TM) movie from ABC-TV's
  9. "Nightline," which chronicles the making of 24 Hours in
  10. Cyberspace. We suggest you watch this fascinating report
  11. prior to viewing the website, since it will give you an idea
  12. of how millions of people around the world took part in the
  13. largest one-day online event in history.
  14.  
  15. Everything you need to experience the 24 Hours in Cyberspace
  16. World Wide Web site is contained on this CD-ROM. You do not
  17. need a modem or an Internet account. If you do have Internet
  18. access, however, there are links at the end of each of the
  19. stories on the CD-ROM that will take you from your computer,
  20. via the Internet, to the people or places featured in these
  21. stories. Look for the Related Site button, which will take
  22. you to appropriate website, newsgroup, or email address.

  24. If you have a modem and you'd like to open an Internet
  25. account, we have included software on this CD-ROM that
  26. allows you to set up your own personal Internet account and
  27. be online in minutes.

  29. If you are currently a member of a commercial online service
  30. such as America Online(R), please contact the service
  31. directly to find out how to configure its service to work
  32. with Netscape Navigator(TM).

  52. HOW TO INSTALL We have provided you with an installer (for
  53. both Windows and Macintosh) that will automatically install
  54. all of the software that is needed to view the stories on
  55. this CD-ROM (see the list below for a description of this
  56. software). We have also created a Custom Install option,
  57. which allows you to be selective about what you would like
  58. to install. WINDOWS USERS: You must run the installer that
  59. is provided on this CD-ROM. If you already have the software
  60. listed, select the custom install option and turn off each
  61. software option. The installer will then only install the
  62. "Program Group". The "Program Group" are the icons that will
  63. allow you to access the contents of the CD.
  64.  
  65. * Netscape Navigator(TM) version 2.02 
  66. Netscape Navigator(TM) 2.02 is the software that allows you to 
  67. view the 24 Hours in Cyberspace World Wide Web site. We have provided an
  68. evaluation copy on this CD-ROM. If you have an Internet connection, 
  69. Netscape Navigator is the software that allows you to "browse" Web pages.
  70.  
  71. At the time this site was created, Netscape Navigator 2.02
  72. offered the most innovative tools and features available --
  73. tools that we felt added to the users' experience. If you
  74. are currently using a newer version of Navigator, it is not
  75. necessary to install version 2.02.
  76.  
  77. WINDOWS USERS PLEASE NOTE: If you are currently using a
  78. newer version of Netscape Navigator and you decide to
  79. install version 2.02, you must choose a different directory
  80. than the one containing your current version. The
  81. installation program will give you this option.

  83. * RealAudio Player(TM) 2.02 
  84. This software allows you to listen to audio clips on the 24 
  85. Hours in Cyberspace CD-ROM. When playing audio from the CD-ROM, 
  86. a small file will download to your hard drive. When you have finished 
  87. using the 24 Hours in Cyberspace CD-ROM, you may erase these files
  88. from your hard drive. Mac users must have a PowerPC
  89. processor or an FPU (floating point unit, also referred to as
  90. a math coprocessor) to play audio. Windows users must have an 
  91. 8-bit sound card to play audio.

  93. * QuickTime(TM) 2.1 
  94. QuickTime(TM) software allows you to
  95. view "The Making of 24 Hours in Cyberspace," a 12-minute
  96. video from ABC-TV's "Nightline" program.

  98. * Adobe Acrobat(R) Reader 2.1 
  99. This software allows you to view PDF(Portable Document Format) 
  100. documents that explain the technology used to create the 
  101. 24 Hours in Cyberspace project. These documents are available 
  102. in the "PDF" folder.

  106. If you are using Windows, check out the COOLSOFT folder. If you are
  107. running a Mac OS computer, check out the Cool Free Software
  108. folder. These folders contain some of the latest tools

  111. * Netscape Navigator(TM) Personal Edition (Windows)
  112. The Netscape Navigator Personal Edition evaluation Software 
  113. included on this CD-ROM gives you easy access to the Internet.

  115. Windows 3.1 users should select Run from the File menu, and
  116. then type D:\COOLSOFT\NETSCAPE\WIN31\DISK1\SETUP.EXE (where D is
  117. the letter of your CD-ROM drive).

  120. and then type D:\COOLSOFT\NETSCAPE\WIN95\DISK1\SETUP.EXE (where
  121. D is the letter of your CD-ROM drive).

  123. The Account Setup Wizard will offer you a list of Internet
  124. service providers to choose from and will walk you through
  125. the easy installation process.

  128. This software is made up of two applications: Access, which
  129. allows you to display and modify high-quality photographic
  130. images that come on a Photo CD, and Player, which lets you
  131. view the contents of a Photo CD as you would view a slide

  194. behind-the-scenes look at "mission control," where the 24
  195. Hours in Cyberspace event took place on February 8, 1996.

  202. TROUBLESHOOTING THE CD-ROM
  203.  
  204. GENERAL TIPS FOR BOTH MAC and WINDOWS PLATFORMS 
  205.  
  206. * Make sure your CD-ROM drive is connected, turned on, and working
  207. properly; that your monitor is set to display at least 256
  208. colors; and that your sound volume is turned up. (See your
  209. computer or sound-card manual or contact your dealer if
  210. necessary.) 
  211.  
  212. * If a page does not load properly within the
  213. site, (missing graphics or photos) click on the "Reload"
  214. button on the top Netscape toolbar. 
  215.  
  216. *The "Related Sites"
  217. links at the bottom of the stories will take you to the
  218. Internet. These sites are not part of the 24 Hours in
  219. Cyberspace web site or CD-ROM - they are maintained by the
  220. people in our stories. Some sites may take some time to
  221. access and load. Please be patient!

  223. * If you are having audio problems, you will want to delete 
  224. old copies of RealAudio and use the RealAudio software that 
  225. comes in our installer.

  227. * Quit any unnecessary programs that
  228. may be using memory.

  230. *If your computer is capable of displaying thousands or
  231.  millions of colors, the photographs and videos will look 
  232.  much crisper.
  233.  
  234. * If the Making of 24 Hours in Cyberspace video does not run
  235. smoothly, disable your virtual memory (in the Memory control
  236. panel on Macintosh, in the 386 Enhanced control panel in Windows).
  237. Make sure you have quit all other applications and removed 
  238. unnecessary device drivers that may be using memory.

  244. select the custom install option and turn off each software

  249. *Make sure no other programs are running in Windows.

  251. *Quit any unnecessary programs that may be using memory.

  253. *After you have run the installer, remember that the 24
  254. Hours in Cyberspace icons will be located in either your
  255. Program Manager or Program Menu.  You cannot access the site
  256. directly from the CD-ROM drive.

  260. * If you would like to reinstall any of the
  261. software included this CD, you'll need to rename or trash
  262. the old 24 Hours in Cyberspace folder.

  264. * If you have multiple copies of Netscape Navigator on your
  265.  hard drive, "drag and drop" the 24 Hours in Cyberspace globe
  266. icon onto the Netscape Navigator 2.02 application you would 
  267. like to use (version 2.02 or higher is required).
