  14. UDEL for Windows is a utility to delete Files and/or Directories and sub-
  15. directories (even if not empty) with numerous options (see below).
  16.

  18. UDEL is distributed as shareware, which means if you've downloaded it from a
  19. bulletin board or obtained it from a friend, you can try it out before you
  20. decide whether you'd like to keep it.  Like all shareware, if you do decide to
  21. keep UDEL, you must pay a registration fee.
  22.  
  23. UDEL is a copyrighted program protected by both international and U.S. copy-
  24. right law.  If you obtained UDEL from an on-line computer service or bulletin
  25. board, a friend or colleague, or another similar source, you have an unre-
  26. gistered (trial) copy.
  27. You are authorized to use this copy without charge for a limited period of
  28. time (One month).  After this time is up, you must register and pay for
  29. UDEL to continue using it.

  31. UDEL is shipped with a DOS and a Windows version. The fee is for both ver-
  32. sions.
  33. You may freely give your copy of UDEL but without discarding or modifiing
  34. any of the files in the package which MUST contain :

  86. What is UDEL ?
  87.  
  88. UDEL allows you to select and delete files AND directories across disks or
  89. partitions if desired, all in one click.
  90. Several file specifications are allowed.
  91. Several options allow you to select with precision which files to delete.
  92. UDEL may also only list the selected files acting like a more powerful
  93. WHEREIS.

  98. This tool may be EXTREMELY DANGEROUS.
  99. As an example, when 'Delete Recursively' and 'Across partitions' check boxes
  100. are checked and the [All] drive is selected in the partitions list box and
  101. '\*.*' is typed in the 'Files/Directories to delete' edit box, UDEL
  102. deletes ALL files AND ALL directories on ALL mounted disks or partitions
  103. (incredible, isn't it ? Yes, but fast and efficient ! I hope you have a
  104. recent backup)

  108. To install UDEL for Windows, you only have to copy files UDELW.EXE and
  109. UDEL_ENW.HLP (this help file) to the same directory and add UDEL to the
  110. Program Manager or to your application launcher (Launch, METZ Runner or
  111. Desktop Helper, for example).

  118. General Controls
  119. ----------------

  121. > 'About...' push button
  122. Opens an about dialog box with a 'Register' button.
  123.  
  124. > 'Help' push button
  125. Launches 'notepad.exe' with the 'UDEL_ENW.HLP' text file (this file).
  126.  
  127. > 'Save Options' push button
  128. Save the state of the different option check boxes. At next launch of UDEL
  129. these options will be set automatically.

  132. Controls associated with the list of files to delete
  133. ----------------------------------------------------

  135. > 'Files/Directories to delete' edit box
  136. This box contains a list of pathes of files and/or directories to delete.
  137. This specs may be typed by the user (for file specs with wildcard charac-
  138. ters) or added to the list via the two 'Add xxx Below' push buttons.
  139. If typed by the user, file specs MUST be separated by commas.

  141. > 'Add Dir. Below' push button
  142. If one directory or drive is selected in the above list box, the selected
  143. path is added to the 'Files...delete' edit box.
  144.  
  145. > 'Add File(s) Below' push button
  146. If one or several files are selected in the above list box, the selected
  147. file specs are added to the 'Files...delete' edit box.

  149. > 'Last' push button
  150. When a list or delete operation is finished, the 'Files...delete' edit box
  151. is cleared. You may recall your last list of file specs with a click on this
  152. button.

  155. Option Controls
  156. ---------------

  158. > 'Confirm Files' check box
  159. If checked, UDEL will ask you to confirm the deletion of each file.
  160.  
  161. > 'Delete Hidden & System files' check box
  162. If checked, UDEL will also delete hidden files and system files.
  163.  
  164. > 'Delete read-only files' check box
  165. If checked, UDEL will also delete read-only files.
  166.  
  167. > 'Fill file with zeroes' check box
  168. If checked, UDEL will replace the content of the file with zeroes before
  169. deleting it. This prevents undelete operations with popular tools like
  170. PC-Tools or Norton Utilities.

  172. > 'Delete According to date' check box
  173. If checked, UDEL will only delete files older or newer (depending on the
  174. checked radio button) than the date typed in the edit box.

  176. > 'Delete Recursively' check box
  177. If checked, UDEL will also scan all sub-directories of the current directory
  178. to find and delete specified files.
  179.  
  180. Following options work only if the 'Delete Recursively' option is checked.
  181.  
  182. > 'Across Partitions' check box and list box
  183. If checked, UDEL will not only scan the current drive but also selected
  184. drives in the list box.
  185. This option works only with file specifications of the form '\<file spec>'
  186. where <file spec> is a single file name (without directory spec) which may
  187. include wildcard characters (* or ?) like '\*.BAK', for example.

  189. > 'Confirm Directories' check box
  190. If checked, UDEL will ask you to confirm the deletion of each directory (but
  191. not of files in the directory if the corresponding check box is not checked).

  193. > 'First Level Only' check box
  194. With the 'Delete Recursively' option checked, if \AAA\BBB and \AAA\CCC\BBB
  195. subdirectories are present in the current drive (same BBB name, but not at
  196. the same level in the tree), the file spec '\AAA\BBB' will delete both BBB
  197. subdirectories in the tree because all subdirectories of AAA will be scanned
  198. not only the \AAA\BBB one.
  199. This may be annoying if not wanted (!).
  200. The 'First Level' option tells UDEL to scan only from the first level of
  201. subdirectories.
  202. In the above example, only '\AAA\BBB' will be destroyed (including all its
  203. possible subdirectories) because UDEL will scan only the first level of
  204. files under 'AAA' to find a 'BBB' file or directory.

  207. Operation Controls
  208. ------------------

  210. > 'List Only' push button
  211. Will only list the found files according to the different files specs and
  212. selected options.
  213.  
  214. > 'Delete' push button
  215. The name of this button is clear. Click on it only if you are sure of what
  216. you are doing !
  217.  
  218. > 'Quit' push button
  219. The name of this button is also clear enough, but it is a little bit less
  220. dangerous. You may click on it even if you are not sure.

  228. Because UDEL may be extremely dangerous, please, first click on the 'List
  229. Only' push button and inspect the list. Then, when you are sure, click on
  230. the 'Last' push button to recall your list of file specs, click on the
  231. 'Delete' one and pray.
  232.  
  233. When UDEL is deleting files, the 'Quit' push button becomes a 'Stop !' push
  234. button. If you have 'Oops !' clicked on the 'Delete' button, you may stop
  235. UDEL with this stop button.

  242. UDEL is NOT able to delete read-only directories.
  243. "But what can be the use of such a read-only directory ?" could you say.
  244. An example of such a directory is the protection directory of Excel 2.x (in the
  245. french version). This directory is also invisible. No one has to create a
  246. file in this directory, only Excel has to control that this directory exists
  247. and is invisible and is read-only.
