- Changes: Version 3.06 05/10/1991 - present
-
- 1. Changed the Copy/Move Rename Dialog Boxes so that the user must
- confirm the directory list box selection as a safety measure.
-
- 2. Added executing *.HLP files using WINHELP when launched from Archives.
-
- 3. Added a one level directory create during file copies and moves if
- the directory didn't exist and the user confirms that the directory
- should be created.
-
- 4. Improved the determination of whether a program was possibly a
- Windows program or DOS program.
-
- Changes: Version 3.05 05/06/1991 - 05/10/1991
-
- 1. Started the official numbering system for the Shareware
- version at 3.05 to show that this is the 5th generation
- of Archives.
-
- 2. Added directory rename.
-
- 3. Made a slight change so that ArSet286.EXE and Archv286.exe
- now do not have to be renamed, in fact, should not be renamed
- to the names of the Real Mode version. The 286 versions still
- require the user to be registered.
-
- 4. Thanks again to the Beta Testers. Your opinions are very
- helpful.
-
- 5. Included a text version of the WinHelp file. Although, the
- WinHelp file was planned throughly, only one Beta tester used
- this file.
-
- 6. Improved the Shift+Direction keys processing. Other than
- finding a way to speed this up, I believe I'm done here.
-
- 7. ******** VERY IMPORTANT FEATURE **************
- A very important feature of Archives was missed by several
- interviewed users!!!
-
- a. When you Decompress a file, choose the 'Checkout Selection'
- option on the UNZIP Functions dialog box (or UnARC or
- UnLZH dialog boxes).
-
- b. The 'Open 2nd' Checkbox will automatically be checked. Leave
- it checked this time and select 'OK".
-
- c. A 2nd instance of Archives will open and automatically
- show you the File Stats for this decompressed to temporary
- directory. If another compressed file is in this list
- decompress it again the same way by selecting 'Checkout
- Selction' and leaving the 'Opened 2nd' checkbox selected.
-
- d. Each successive copy of Archives opened this way will
- show in the Window Title Bar which copy of Archives it is.
-
- e. Now close the last copy of Archives opened. the previous
- copy of Archives will open and ask if you want the temporary
- directory and associated files deleted. Check 'OK'.
-
- f. Repeat step 'e' until your are back to the first copy of
- Archives.
-
- HMMMM, pretty good for viewing and putting away files downloaded
- from bulletin boards files, do you think?
-
- Changes: Version 0.94 04/29/1991 - 05/03/1991
-
- 1. Added several options for running DOS applications using either
- ARCH.PIF or the users _DEFAULT.PIF files. I have the ARCH.PIF
- set up to execute in a Window and my _DEFAULT.PIF is setup
- for exclusive operation. (see ARCHIVES.HLP _DEFAULT.PIF)
-
- This provides more options for executing DOS programs from
- Archives or just getting a DOS command line.
-
- 2. Greatly simplified the number of buttons clicked when the
- Checkout option is used and 'Open 2nd' (copy of Archives) is
- selected. And simplified the Checkin process.
-
- 3. If a second copy of Archives is called, a few of the user
- modified parameters from the first copy is inherited.
-
- 4. Added several options for Changing Date & Time of files,
- including updating the compressed file with the date & time
- of the lastest internal file.
-
- 5. Added changing file attributes. Hidden, Read/Write, and
- the archive bit.
-
- 6. Supplied an option so Users could save their Registration
- Code in the WIN.INI. This code will be used to reRegister
- Archives whenever ArcSetup is reran. Archives.exe does not
- require this setting in the INI file, only ArcSetup.exe.
-
- This saves the user the burden of reentering the loooong
- registration code everytime.
-
- Changes: Version 0.93 03/22/1991 - 04/26/1991
-
- 1. Significantly changed the memory management. Added no new
- functions; however, the changes that I made were so
- significant that THIS OUGHT TO BE CONSIDERED a NEW RELEASE
- when you test the functions again. What use to work may not
- work!!!!!! The program as stored on your hard disk is larger
- than before, but the memory used by the system is much
- smaller ~ 35K.
-
- However, Again, I throughly retested this app, so I don't
- expect problems. The program code is basically the same, but
- many, many variables were modified...
-
- This version requires significantly less memory to run, almost
- all of the code is discardable.
-
- 2. Allowed the system to make the filename AND DIRECTORY during
- the compress procedure.
-
- 3. Found a bug that was preventing the application from
- compressing files on some computers. The program would
- terminate with an system error message. Thanks, Phil.
-
- 4. Changed the locations of some of the menu items to make more
- sense. I know that it is rude to change the menu item locations,
- but some of them were located poorly and this is a Beta release.
-
- 5. Compiled a 286 version named ARCHV286.EXE. This MUST be Renamed
- to ARCHIVES.EXE. Run this version if you never run Archives
- while Windows is in the REAL mode. This version will run in both
- Standard & Enhanced Modes of windows (PROTECTED). It is slightly
- smaller, and slightly faster to run versus the REAL mode version.
- This version will require the user to be registered before it
- will run. ARSET286.EXE is used to configure this program.
- ARSET286.EXE must also be renamed to ArcSetup.exe.
-
- The final versions may not require them to be renamed.
-
- The Beta users can use the Either the REAL Mode version or the
- PROTECTED Mode version. You cannot use both programs at the
- same time!!!!!!!! Windows will terminate because they have
- the same windclass name (technical jargon).
-
- 6. Automated a few functions so that the user presses fewer keys.
-
- 7. Improved the mouse painting function.
-
- 8. Added another several mouse clicking windows.
- These windows are clicked on using either the right or left
- mouse button. They are yellow or blue in color.
-
- For example:
-
- The upper left yellow window will change between viewing
- FILE STATS and viewing the contents of a file.
- Left mouse key activates window. Right mouse key will find
- selected file in the FILE STATS display. (See the Glossary
- in ARCHIVES.HLP)
-
- 9. Added a maximize Task Yield function to the Configure menu.
- When activated, the application will yield windows time to
- other applications. This feature is very useful when running
- Archives while running a communications program in the
- background. This feature is activated from the Configure
- menu. To see this function work, you'll need to have at least
- windows clock running or download/upload a file using a Windows
- communications program. Archives even starts from File Manager
- without stopping the clock for the complete start-up, and
- without a significant delay in startup appearance to the user.
-
- Although, if your communications program is busy, the yielding
- to the communications program slows some of Archives functions
- 2 to 6 times versus when the yield is off. Whether or not you
- use yield depends on your priorities, personal time or
- communications speed.
-
- 10. Modified the functions to work with foreign characters in file
- names and directory names.
-
- 11. Added a significant amount of additional error checking.
-
- 12. ArcSetup.exe will now optionally install the program icons in
- the Windows Program Manager.
-
- Changes: Version 0.92 03/19/1991 - 03/21/1991
-
- 1. This was a special release that went only to one Beta tester.
- Thanks again, Phil.
-
- Changes: Version 0.91 03/19/1991 - 03/21/1991
-
- 1. Fixed the algorithm for Copy or Move/Rename files to insure
- that the file being copied is not being copied to the same
- directory. Before the fix, the original file was sometimes
- corrupted.
-
- 2. Minor ArcSetup installation improvements/changes.
-
- 3. Optimized the command line test for long directory names.
- Some cases were prohibited when a temporary batch file would
- have worked in compress & decompress functions.
-
- 4. Added Ctrl+character HOT KEY to change the drive that Archives
- is viewing (similar to File Manager).
-
- For example, Ctrl+A will change the drive viewed to A:
- Ctrl+C will change the drive viewed to C: etc.
-
- 5. Made Archives more user friendly if a floppy drive was selected
- & a disk wasn't in the drive.
-
- 6. Added the hourglass to several functions to show the user when
- the system was busy.
-
- 7. Removed the requirement requiring that a file to be copied,
- deleted, or moved/renamed was chosen from the Viewer Window if
- the FILE STATS were showing. Now if a file was not selected from
- the Viewer Window and the FILE STATS are showing, then the file
- selected in the Files Window is used. Added a message to the
- Copy, Delete, and Move/Rename dialog box describing where the
- file was selected.
-
- 8. Fixed an error in the Copy, Delete, and Move/Rename functions
- where the function would quit on the 1st error even after the
- user chose to continue.
-
- 9. Fixed an "improvement" that limited the number of files allowed
- in Copy, Delete, Move/Rename, compress, and decompress operations
- to less than the 700 files advertized.
-
- 10. Modified Archives so that the display uses the Users Window colors
-
- 11. Made several minor changes to the text in the dialog boxes to
- allow for differences between various user systems fonts.
-
-
- Thanks to the contributors...
-
-
- SPECIAL NOTE: 03/21/1991 - 04/01/1991
-
- I found the problem were one Beta Tester was having problems with
- Archives TERMINATING when he tries to compress files. This was one of
- those problems that exists only sometimes, but was definately a tough
- error to find in the code.
-
