  1. Welcome to Aporia version 1.4a!

  3. Aporia is a powerful object oriented user interface for Windows 2.x and
  4. 3.0.  It lets you organize your work simply and clearly by providing a
  5. variety of advanced features that make its icon interface really work.
  6.  
  7. The heart of Aporia is the concept of tools.  A tool is not just a
  8. pretty picture, it also has enhanced abilities.  It can be dropped onto
  9. another to be run, or chained together to form a new tool.  A tool can
  10. store other tools letting you run multiple programs with one mouse
  11. click.  A tool can size and position the programs it runs.  And, tools
  12. are fully integrated into a powerful file management scheme.

  14. Windows 3 is great and Aporia is a powerful enhancement to the Windows 3
  15. environment.

  18. Aporia Can Do Things That The File And Program Manager Can't.

  22. INSTALLING and RUNNING Aporia
  23. -----------------------------

  25. To setup Aporia run the program SETUP_AP.EXE.
  26. When you run it you must specify the directory where Windows
  27. is installed on your system and the version of Windows you are
  28. using (either 2 or 3). To run setup:
  29.  
  30. 1. Insert the Aporia distribution disk in you A drive.
  31.  
  32. 2. Make the A drive the current drive, at the DOS prompt type:
  33.    A:<Enter>
  34.  
  35. 3. Run the setup program, at the DOS prompt type:
  36.    SETUP_AP <Windows directory> <version>
  37.  
  38.    Example: SETUP_AP C:\WINDOWS 3<Enter>
  39.  
  40. This program installs and sets up Aoria for first-time users 
  41. and for those updating from earlier versions of Aporia. 
  42. This program copies Aporia to your Windows directory, and 
  43. for Windows 3 users installs a library of images and can 
  44. make Aporia your shell (replacing the Program Manager).
  45.  
  46. To run Aporia under Windows:

  48. If you choose to install Aporia as the Windows shell just run
  49. Windows as you normally do and Aporia will come up automatically.

  51. If you have not installed Aporia as the Windows shell at the 
  52. DOS prompt type:

  84.   SETUP_AP.EXE  The Setup program for Aporia. This program copies Aporia
  85.                 to your Windows directory, and for Windows 3 users
  86.                 installs a library of images and can make Aporia your
  87.                 shell (replacing the Program Manager).

  100.   APORIA.INT    This is the tutorial section of the manual in
  101.                 Microsoft Write format.  It takes you step by step
  102.                 through the basic operation of Aporia. It is available
  103.                 online when you double-click on the Help Tool, which is
  104.                 the icon with the question mark.

  106.   NOTES.TXT     The default Aporia note file.
  107.  
  108.   CHANGES.TXT*  A list of changes in this release.

  110.   AP_READ.ME*   This important information text that you are currently
  111.                 reading. Always read this file first.

  116.   AIF_16.EXE    Self extracting file containing Aporia image

  120.                 in 16 color EGA, VGA, and SuperVGA display
  121.                 modes under Windows 3.

  123.   AIF_256.EXE   This is a self extracting compressed file
  124.                 containing Aporia image files for the basic
  125.                 Aporia tools and for programs supplied with
  126.                 Windows 3.0. This file contains image files
  127.                 for use systems running in 256 color SuperVGA 
  128.                 display modes under Windows 3.

  130.   APORIA.GRP    A Program Manager group file for Aporia.

  132.   AP_ICONS.EXE  Self extracting file containing the icons for
  133.                 the basic Aporia tools in Windows 3.0 icon
  134.                 (ICO) format.

  136. Note that some of the above files (marked with *) are user manual and
  137. introductory text. If you are short on disk space, you might want to
  138. delete them, from your Windows directory after you have become
  139. acquainted with Aporia.

  142. TO GET ON-LINE HELP FOR APORIA:
  143. -------------------------------

  145. Put the mouse cursor on the question mark icon (the Help tool) and 
  146. click twice quickly with the left mouse button. To get help on 
  147. any of the Aporia tools (icons) drag them onto the Help tool.

  150. LATE BREAKING PROGRAM INFORMATION

  152. The following useful information in not included in the user manual.

  154. * Creating your own icons with Paintbrush:
  155.   Here's an easy way to create your own icons using Paintbrush and the
  156.   Image Maker program supplied with Aporia.
  157.      1. Run both Paintbrush and Image Maker.
  158.      2. From the Paintbrush Options menu select the Image Attributes 
  159.         command and set the image size to 33 by 33 PELS.
  160.      3. From the Paintbrush File menu select the New command.
  161.      4. Draw your icon in the Paintbrush window.
  162.      5. In Image Maker select the Capture Icon command and click the mouse
  163.         over your the icon you drew in Paintbrush.
  164.      6. Your icon will appear in Image Maker and then can be saved to
  165.         an Aporia image file.
  166.    
  167. * Registered users can specify text to appear when the screen blanker
  168.   is up in place of their registration name. To do this enter the
  169.   following line in the Aporia section of your WIN.INI file:
  170.      BlankName=<text>
  171.   Where <text> is the text you want displayed. For example if you work
  172.   for Acme Scrub Brush Ltd. you could add the line:
  173.      BlankName=Acme Scrub Brush Ltd.
  174.   This feature is NOT available for unregistered users.
