  27. ------------

  29. The disk included with this application note contains DrWatson and
  30. MSD, two programs that aid Microsoft programmers in debugging Windows.
  31. DrWatson is a program that logs information about conditions that
  32. exist when an unrecoverable application error (UAE) occurs. MSD
  33. (Microsoft Diagnostics) is a program that identifies system
  34. configuration information.
  35.  
  36. This application note explains how to install and use DrWatson and
  37. MSD. For Microsoft to most effectively identify and solve system
  38. problems, we ask that you use these programs and periodically send us
  39. the logs that result. The information in this application note
  40. describes what to do when a UAE occurs and how to send Microsoft the
  41. information that you gather.

  43. DrWatson
  44. --------
  45.  
  46. DrWatson is a debugging tool designed to provide software programmers
  47. with detailed information on the internal state of Windows when a UAE
  48. occurs. DrWatson must be running at the time a UAE occurs to extract
  49. the internal information from the system.
  50.  
  51. As DrWatson uses very little memory and does not affect the
  52. performance of Windows, we encourage you to install DrWatson if a UAE
  53. has occurred before. After DrWatson is installed, information is
  54. collected when a UAE occurs and written to a special file
  55. (DRWATSON.LOG) located in the Windows directory.
  56.  
  57. DrWatson is a diagnostic tool, not a cure for a problem. Having
  58. DrWatson will not prevent an error from occurring, but the information
  59. in DRWATSON.LOG will help Microsoft developers make the next version
  60. of Windows even better.
  61.  
  62. Microsoft Diagnostics (MSD)
  63. ---------------------------
  64.  
  65. The Microsoft Diagnostics (MSD) program is designed to assist
  66. Microsoft customers and Product Support Services (PSS) technicians in
  67. solving problems with Microsoft products. MSD identifies system
  68. configuration information such as the BIOS, video card type and
  69. manufacturer, installed processor(s), I/O port status, operating
  70. system version, environment settings, hardware devices attached, and
  71. additional software running concurrently with MSD.
  72.  
  73. MSD should be used in conjunction with DrWatson to provide valuable
  74. information on hardware configurations and UAEs. Error reports should
  75. include information from both the MSD program and DrWatson. (The
  76. section titled "When a UAE Occurs" on page 2 of this application note
  77. details the procedure for using MSD with DrWatson.)
  78.  
  79. Installing DrWatson and MSD
  80. ---------------------------
  81.  
  82. We recommend that you start DrWatson automatically each time you start
  83. Windows. This will allow you to collect critical information each time
  84. a UAE occurs.
  85.  
  86. To install MSD and DrWatson and to start DrWatson automatically when
  87. you start Windows, do the following:
  88.  
  89. 1. Place the enclosed disk in drive A.
  90.  
  91. 2. From Windows, start File Manager.
  92.  
  93. 3. From the File menu, choose Copy. In the From and To boxes, type the
  94.    following:
  95.  
  96.       From:  a:\msd.exe
  97.       To:    c:\
  98.       
  99.    Choose the Copy button. The MSD program is now copied to your root
  100.    directory (if your root directory is not on drive C, substitute the
  101.    correct drive letter in the To box).
  102.  
  103. 4. From the File menu, choose Copy. In the From box, type the
  104.    following:
  105.  
  106.       a:\drwatson.exe toolhelp.dll
  107.  
  108.    In the To box, type in the path to your Windows directory (for
  109.    example: "c:\windows" -- without the quotation marks). Choose the
  110.    Copy button. The DrWatson files are now copied to your Windows
  111.    directory.
  112.  
  113. 5. From the File menu, choose Copy. Make a backup copy of your WIN.INI
  114.    file. For example, if your Windows directory is called Windows and
  115.    is on drive C, in the From and To boxes, type the following:
  116.  
  117.       From:  c:\windows\win.ini
  118.       To:    c:\windows\win.bak
  119.  
  120.    Choose the Copy button.
  121.  
  122. 6. Exit File Manager and open Notepad or any text editor. Open the
  123.    WIN.INI file, and in the [Windows] section, add DrWatson to the
  124.    LOAD= line. For example:
  125.  
  126.       [windows]
  127.       Beep=yes
  128.       Spooler=yes
  129.       NullPort=None
  130.       LOAD=DRWATSON.EXE
  131.  
  132. 7. Save the WIN.INI file and exit the text editor.
  133.  
  134. 8. Exit and then restart Windows.
  135.  
  136. DrWatson should now appear as an icon on your desktop.
  137.  
  138. Using DrWatson
  139. --------------
  140.  
  141. DrWatson adds a file to your Windows directory called DRWATSON.LOG. If
  142. a UAE occurs while DrWatson is running, DrWatson captures data
  143. regarding the internal operations of Windows. In addition, DrWatson
  144. prompts you for details on how the UAE occurred. When you type in your
  145. response, please include information on what you were doing or what
  146. steps created the UAE. This information is recorded in the
  147. DRWATSON.LOG file and will help our software programmers track the
  148. problems.

  150. At this time, DrWatson does not detect all system errors, so don't be
  151. alarmed if DrWatson does not record information after a particular
  152. system error.
  153.  
  154. Each time a UAE occurs, DrWatson appends new data to DRWATSON.LOG. To
  155. prevent this file from growing too large and to aid our processing,
  156. please save DRWATSON.LOG as a different file periodically. (For
  157. example, if five UAEs occur in one day, save DRWATSON.LOG under a
  158. different name before you start Windows again the next day.)
  159.  
  160. To save the file under a different name, type the following at the
  161. command prompt before you start Windows:
  162.  
  163.    rename c:\drwatson.log <newname>
  164.  
  165. where <newname> is any legal MS-DOS filename, such as SEPT06.LOG. If
  166. your root directory is not on drive C, substitute the correct drive
  167. letter.
  168.  
  169. When a UAE Occurs
  170. -----------------
  171.  
  172. 1. When a UAE occurs, the DrWatson dialog box will appear. Type in a
  173.    description of what you were doing prior to receiving the error.
  174.    Press ENTER.
  175.  
  176. 2. Exit Windows if possible. If exiting is not possible, restart your
  177.    computer.
  178.  
  179. 3. Change to the root directory, and at the command prompt, type "msd"
  180.    (without the quotation marks) and press ENTER to run the MSD
  181.    program. (For LCD and monochrome screens, type "msd /b" and press
  182.    ENTER.)
  183.  
  184. 4. Press R to choose Generate Report. Select the Generate To File
  185.    option. When prompted for a filename, type "msd.log" (without the
  186.    quotation marks and press ENTER. Fill in the information requested.
  187.  
  188. 5. Exit MSD by pressing X.
  189.  
  190. 6. Append the MSD log to the DrWatson log by typing the following at
  191.    the command prompt:
  192.  
  193.       type <path>\MSD.LOG >> <path\drwatson>
  194.  
  195.    where <path\drwatson> is the path and filename of the DrWatson log.
  196.    For example, if you named your DrWatson log the default
  197.    DRWATSON.LOG (in the WINDOWS directory on drive C), type the
  198.    following:
  199.  
  200.       type c:\msd.log >> c:\windows\drwatson.log
  201.  
  202. 7. After you have logged several UAEs, send us the log by following
  203.    the instructions listed on page 4 of this application note.
  204.  
  205. 8. After sending us the log, delete the MSD and DrWatson logs (for
  206.    example, MSD.LOG and DRWATSON.LOG) from your hard disk.
  207.  
  208. More Information About Using the Microsoft Diagnostics Program
  209. --------------------------------------------------------------
  210.  
  211. The MSD program runs with MS-DOS and the DOS compatibility box of
  212. OS/2.
  213.  
  214. MSD presents a Main Menu screen split into two sections. The upper
  215. section presents a summary of information that the utility has
  216. gathered from your system. For additional information on any category,
  217. use the quick key commands, or move the highlight bar (using the arrow
  218. keys) to any category and press the ENTER key. A dialog box appears
  219. that presents detailed information for that category. Return to the
  220. Main Menu screen by pressing the ESC key.
  221.  
  222. The following is a brief explanation of the categories in the first
  223. section of the MSD program:
  224.  
  225.    Category           Description
  226.    --------           -----------
  227.    
  228.    BIOS               Displays the BIOS manufacturer, date, version,
  229.                       and type
  230.  
  231.    Processor          Displays the processor type and math
  232.                       coprocessor, if installed
  233.  
  234.    Memory             Displays a map of memory from 768K to 1 MB and
  235.                       information concerning the configuration of RAM
  236.                       and ROM in your computer system
  237.  
  238.    Video              Shows your video card's manufacturer and model,
  239.                       BIOS version, memory, and current video mode
  240.  
  241.    Network            Detects whether a network is MS-Net or
  242.                       compatible, or Novell
  243.  
  244.    Mouse              Shows the DOS mouse driver version number, mouse
  245.                       type, and other information concerning the mouse
  246.  
  247.    Game Adapter       Dynamically displays game card status for up to
  248.                       two game devices or joysticks
  249.  
  250.    CD-ROM             Displays the Microsoft CD-ROM Extensions
  251.                       (MSCDEX.EXE) version number and drive letter
  252.  
  253.    Operating System   Displays the operating system version number and
  254.                       path from which MSD was run
  255.  
  256.    Parallel Ports     Dynamically displays the status of installed
  257.                       parallel ports and their port addresses    
  258.  
  259.    Serial Ports       Dynamically displays the status of active serial
  260.                       ports and their current configurations
  261.  
  262.    Disk Drives        Scans all local and logical drives and displays
  263.                       the total and available bytes
  264.  
  265.    IRQ Status         Shows the current IRQ (hardware interrupt)
  266.                       status
  267.  
  268.    Environment        Displays environment variables
  269.  
  270.    AUTOEXEC.BAT       Lists the AUTOEXEC.BAT file
  271.  
  272.    CONFIG.SYS         Lists the CONFIG.SYS file

  274. The lower section of the MSD screen includes additional functions you
  275. can use with your system, as follows:
  276.  
  277.    Function           Description

  280.    Resident Programs  Displays the names of programs loaded in RAM at
  281.                       the time MSD was executed, their locations, and
  282.                       their sizes; programs may be loaded into
  283.                       multiple segments of RAM and have multiple
  284.                       entries in the table
  285.  
  286.    Device Table       Displays software and hardware device drivers
  287.                       installed; these include default devices, such
  288.                       as COM1 or LPT1, and user-installed devices
  289.                       loaded from the CONFIG.SYS file, such as
  290.                       HIMEM.SYS or EMM386.SYS
  291.  
  292.    Printer Test       Prints a page to test the connection between the
  293.                       computer and either a TTY or PostScript-type
  294.                       printer
  295.  
  296.    Generate Report    Prints a "faxable" report to a normal TTY
  297.                       printer or to a file
  298.  
  299.    File Viewer        Views text files by entering the path and
  300.                       filename
  301.  
  302.    Memory Browser     Searches selected ROM and RAM areas for search
  303.                       strings such as "Copyright" and "Version"
  304.  
  305.    About              Displays the MSD version number and copyright
  306.                       information
  307.  
  308.    Exit               Exits MSD
  309.  
  310. Sending Information Gathered by DrWatson and MSD to Microsoft
  311. -------------------------------------------------------------
  312.  
  313. Electronic format is currently the only way we can accept DrWatson log
  314. information. This means we can receive log data by disk, through
  315. CompuServe, or through electronic mail. In all cases, we require your
  316. company name, address, and the name and phone number of a person we
  317. can contact in the event we need additional data.
  318.  
  319. You can use any of the following methods to send the report results to
  320. us:
  321.  
  322. 1. Send a disk containing the DrWatson log(s) to the following mailing
  323.    address:
  324.  
  325.       Microsoft Corporation
  326.       Attn: Dr. Watson Program
  327.       One Microsoft Way, Building #3
  328.       Redmond, WA 98052-6399
  329.       
  330. 2. Send the information in the DrWatson log(s) via email to Watson at
  331.    Microsoft. Our Internet address is watson@microsoft.com.
  332.  
  333. 3. Post the data contained in the DrWatson log(s) in the WINADV forum,
  334.    Library 17, in the Microsoft Windows section on CompuServe. In
  335.    CompuServe, type the following to get to the forum:
  336.  
  337.       go winadv
  338.  
  339. After you have sent us the log file(s) by one of the methods described
  340. above, delete all of the log files from your hard disk to free up disk
  341. space.
  342.  
  343. Unfortunately, we cannot respond to log contributors, but we will
  344. review every DrWatson file and actively work on solving reported
  345. problems. We thank you in advance for your efforts. Your help will
