  13. Welcome to the Novell Desktop Systems Group International Business Update
  14. Service.  This service is part of the Novell Desktop Systems Group commitment 
  15. to bringing you the very latest features for your DR DOS 6.0 operating system.

  17. The files and information enclosed in this Windows 3.1 update contain 
  18. enhancements for your DR DOS 6.0 operating system specifically and only in the 
  19. area of Windows 3.1 compatibility.  These enhancements include:
  20.  
  21.     -- Full support for Windows 3.1.
  22.  
  23.     -- The DR DOS EMM386.SYS memory manager now supports upper memory while
  24.       running Windows 3.1 in Standard and Enhanced Mode.
  25.  
  26. To respond to your needs in this area in an efficient and timely manner, we 
  27. will be releasing additional files, information, and enhancements (unrelated 
  28. to Windows 3.1) to you, as a registered user, at a later date and free of 
  29. charge.

  39. The following is an excerpt from the Release Notes which describes features of 
  40. DR DOS 6.0 that are not explained elsewhere in the DR DOS 6.0 documentation.

  42. Microsoft Windows 3.1
  43.  
  44.     DR DOS 6.0 is fully compatible with Microsoft Windows 3.1.
  45.  
  46.         The Windows 3.1 default drive for temporary swap files is the drive
  47.         on which Windows was installed. If Windows is installed on a
  48.         SuperStor drive it is recommended that users change the default
  49.         drive for swap files to an uncompressed drive. This should be done
  50.         for both temporary and permanent swap files. Use the 386
  51.         Enhanced option from Control Panel to change swap files.
  52.     
  53.     If Super PC-Kwik is already loaded when you install Windows 3.1,
  54.     you are informed by the Windows SETUP program that SUPERPCK.EXE 
  55.     is running and you are warned that your system may fail; ignore 
  56.         this message and continue with the Windows installation procedure.
  57.  
  58.         Windows 3.1 makes changes to autoexec.bat and config.sys on
  59.         installation. It is recommended that you make a backup of these
  60.         files.
  61.     
  62.     By default, Windows installs the SMARTDrive disk cache program 
  63.     and the HIMEM.SYS memory manager. However, the DR DOS 6.0 disk 
  64.     cache, Super PC-Kwik, and the DR DOS 6.0 MemoryMAX drivers provide 
  65.     superior functionality over the Windows 3.1 SMARTDrive disk cache 
  66.     and HIMEM.SYS. To use Super PC-Kwik and the DR DOS MemoryMAX 
  67.     drivers, instead of SMARTDrive and HIMEM.SYS, you simply remove one 
  68.     line from your autoexec.bat and config.sys files. Edit autoexec.bat 
  69.     to remove the line
  70.     
  71.     C:\WINDOWS\SMARTDRV.EXE
  72.     
  73.     and edit config.sys to remove the line
  74.     
  75.     DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS
  76.  
  77.         The above lines should be removed after Windows 3.1 has been
  78.         installed but prior to rebooting.
  79.  
  80.         If you are using the DR DOS 6.0 EMM386.SYS MemoryMAX driver, Windows
  81.         may also replace the EMM386.SYS line in your config.sys file with
  82.         the Windows EMM386.EXE line. As a result of this change, your system
  83.         may generate an error message when rebooting. The EMM386 line should
  84.         be changed back to its original form after installing Windows 3.1 for
  85.         your system to boot properly. Refer to the backup of your config.sys
  86.         to be sure that you have the correct syntax.

  88.         The Windows 3.1 installation will also insert a STACKS command
  89.         into the CONFIG.SYS. Even though DR DOS does not use a STACKS
  90.         command the line can be left in CONFIG.SYS. No error will
  91.         result.
  92.     
  93.     DR DOS 6.0 is compatible with both the SMARTDrive disk cache and 
  94.     with HIMEM.SYS. If you want to continue using these drivers, you 
  95.     must run the DR DOS SETUP program, and remove MemoryMAX and Super 
  96.     PC-Kwik. However, if you do use SMARTDrive instead of Super PC-Kwik, 
  97.         do not use the SMARTDrive + option to enable caching on a SuperStor
  98.         compressed drive. Unexpected errors may result when this option is
  99.         used.
  100.     
  101.     EMM386.SYS supports upper memory for Windows 3.1 running in Standard 
  102.     or Enhanced mode. You no longer need to use the /WINSTD option on the 
  103.         EMM386.SYS command line to run Windows 3.1 in Standard mode.  (Note:
  104.         As a result, if you use SETUP to configure MemoryMAX, EMM386.SYS, to 
  105.         run Windows 3.1, you should respond "No" to the question "Support 
  106.         Windows Standard Mode" when prompted.)

  108.     NOTE: Machines that have LPT1 ports and are using NE2000 network 
  109.     cards configured for I/O address 360 have occasionally hung or had 
  110.     trouble running DOS applications under Windows 3.1. If this is 
  111.     encountered, try setting the NE2000 for a lower I/O address.
  112.
