- INTRODUCTION:
-
- The Sfware softfont utilities from Small Planet Software are MS-DOS programs
- distributed under a shareware license agreement that provide extensive font
- manipulation capabilities for HP LaserJet softfonts.
-
- The Sfware utilities allow you to download, rotate, compress, expand, view,
- and perform special effects on softfonts. The effects provided include bold,
- fill, convert to fixed spacing, halftone, hollow, invert, mirror, outline,
- convert to proportional spacing, resize, reverse, shade, shadow, slant,
- stripe, three-d, hollow-three-d, filled-three-d, and tilt effects. The
- effects can be tailored and customized for any font with various parameters
- and shading patterns.
-
- Please read the WARRANTY and LICENSE agreement before using Sfware. Using
- Sfware implicitly indicates your acceptance of the terms of these agreements.
-
- DISTRIBUTION:
-
- Sfware is distributed in four archive files: SFW???P1, SFW???P2, SFW???D1,
- and SFW???D2. The 'P' archives contain the programs and the 'D' archives
- contain documentation. The question marks in the archive names are place
- holders for the Sfware version number. In practice, the archive names will
- be SFW100P1, etc. IT IS ABSOLUTELY VITAL THAT YOU HAVE BOTH PROGRAM ARCHIVES
- BEFORE YOU TRY TO USE SFWARE! The PACKING.?? file in each archive lists all
- the files it should contain. This read-me file describes a quick-start
- procedure for trying Sfware as fast as possible. You are encouraged to read
- the manual as well. The manual contains a complete description of all of the
- features of Sfware.
-
- The file PRINTDOC describes how to print the documentation.
-
- If you do not have a hard disk (with at least 1.5Meg free), or if you have
- less than 400Kb or so of available memory, the quick start procedure that
- follows may not work. Please consult the utilities manual in SFW???D2 for
- more information about running the standalone utilities. The full-screen
- shell program is too large to run in less than about 400Kb of memory or from
- a floppy.
-
- A NOTE ABOUT REINSTALLATION:
-
- If you have already installed a previous version of Sfware, begin at step
- two below. When you are unpacking the archives, replace existing files
- with the new versions. Be sure to run the SfConfig program even though you
- already have a configuration file. SfConfig may update your configuration
- (but it will not change or delete any configuration variables that you have
- created).
-
- QUICK START:
-
- The following steps will get Sfware up and running. These steps assume that
- you want to run the full-screen shell program and that this is a first-time
- installation. If you do not want (or cannot) run the shell, please consult
- the documentation for more information about running the standalone
- utilities.
-
- 1) Create a directory on your hard disk for Sfware. In the steps that
- follow, this directory will be refered to as "d:\path". So, for example,
- if you put Sfware in a directory called "SF" on drive "C:", you would
- replace all occurances of "d:\path" that follow with "C:\SF".
-
- 2) Copy the program and documentation archives to the Sfware directory.
-
- 3) Unpack the program archives SFW???P1 and SFW???P2. Use the PACKING.P1 and
- PACKING.P2 files to assure that the archives you received are complete.
-
- 4) Use the DOS SET command to create an environment variable called SFCFG.
- The SFCFG environment variable names the configuration file. The
- configuration file should have the extension ".CFG" and should be in the
- Sfware directory. For example,
-
- SET SFCFG=d:\path\SF.CFG
-
- is a good choice. This environment variable is required in order to use
- Sfware. You must set this variable every time you want to use Sfware.
- You can do this automatically by placing the SET command in your
- AUTOEXEC.BAT file so it will be set every time you boot your computer.
-
- 5) Run SFCONFIG. SfConfig will create the configuration file (named by the
- environment variable SFCFG) and allow you to select the model of your
- LaserJet printer, the name of the print device (LPT1, LPT2, etc), and the
- default softfont directory.
-
- 6) Sfware is ready to go. To use Sfware, run the SFSHELL program from the
- Sware directory by typing:
-
- d:\path\SFSHELL
-
- 7) Now that you've had a chance to try it out, please consult the PRINTDOC
- file to get instructions for printing the documentation. It is strongly
- recommended that you read the documentation.
-
- 8) Please register your shareware. If you decide to keep Sfware, print the
- file ORDER.FRM and return it with your payment to receive a registered
- copy of Sfware.
