  9.          PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:

  11.               THE VIRUS TERMINUS(c) is a SHELL utility program for McAfee's
  12.          virus fighter programs VIRUSCAN, CLEAN, and VALIDATE. TERMINUS is
  13.          menu driven and can be used with a mouse or keyboard. One of the
  14.          main objectives in writing this program was to reduce the amount of
  15.          user input required each time a file is scanned, cleaned or paced
  16.          through the validate functions. The report function of SCAN and
  17.          CLEAN was enhanced by appending critical information to the report
  18.          file. The SCAN/CLEAN program switches have been made visible and can
  19.          be toggled through an easy to use interface.

  21.               TERMINUS was designed to run from a hard disk but will
  22.          work satisfactorily if installed on a high capacity floppy. 360K
  23.          floppy installation is also feasibile for systems already infected
  24.          where the main concern is to quickly remove all traces of virus.
  25.          It caters to the low-end of the video standard spectrum  by
  26.          offering compatibility with IBM MDA monochrome, IBM CGA Color and
  27.          those systems that utilize the IBM CGA standard but employ a money
  28.          saving green, amber or white monochrome display device.

  68.          Make sure you have the following files from each(* see below *) of the
  69.          above in the same subdirectory for hard disk installation or on the
  70.          same (* see note *) floppy for quick start and access to all TERMINUS

  86.          DO NOT ATTEMPT TO RUN TERMINUS FROM YOUR HARD DRIVE IF IT IS ALREADY
  87.          INFECTED WITH A VIRUS. USE THE FLOPPY INSTALLATION FIRST INSTEAD!

  89.               HARD DRIVE:  1. Create one subdirectory for SCAN,CLEAN,
  90.                               VALIDATE,VIRLIST and THE VIRUS TERMINUS files.
  91.  
  92.                            2. Copy McAfee Associates and VIRUS TERMINUS files
  93.                               to the subdirectory.
  94.  
  95.                          * 3. Run VTEC20.EXE either directly or from
  96.                               your shell, then press F5 to configure.
  97.                               Use main menu select #5 to create VCLEAN.LST
  98.

  100.               FLOPPY :     1. Shut your system down if it is already infected.
  101.                               BOOT from a clean non-infected DOS system disk.
  102.                               Use FORMAT.COM from this disk to make a new
  103.                               formatted data disk - DON'T USE ANY FILES or
  104.                               UTILITIES ON YOUR HARD DISK if your system is
  105.                               infected.

  107.                            2. Copy McAfee Associates and VIRUS TERMINUS
  108.                               files to the disk. Copy your shell or
  109.                               file utility to the disk if there's room.
  110.                               (If your disk is 360K you will have to leave
  111.                               off your shell and the TERMINUS help file
  112.                               VTECHELP.EXE - use VTEC.DOC as a guide -
  113.                               so that you can complete the next step.)

  115.                            3. Copy COMMAND.COM to the disk. Write protect
  116.                               the disk!
  117.  
  118.                          * 4. Place this disk in the BOOT drive(the drive
  119.                               where you would place the DOS system disk
  120.                               when you first start your machine - DRIVE #A)
  121.                               Run VTEC20.EXE, then press F5 to configure.
  122.  
  123.                               TYPE the following lines pressing <ENTER>
  124.                               after each to run TERMINUS:

  130.          * Start your machine up (BOOT) from a clean non-infected floppy DOS
  131.            disk if your system is infected. Disinfect and then run the VIRUS
  132.            TERMINUS from your hard disk.(WRITE PROTECT THE FLOPPY!!!)

  139.                     ***** LAST MINUTE UPDATE INFORMATION *****

  143.                              SCAN/CLEAN VERSION NOTES
  144.  
  145.          McAfee Associates SCAN-76 and CLEAN76 introduce two new program
  146.          switches, /NOBREAK and /NOPAUSE. Earlier versions of SCAN and CLEAN
  147.          do not recognize these switches. TERMINUS has been updated to
  148.          include both /NOBREAK and /NOPAUSE as keyboard/mouse toggled options
  149.          which will work nicely with v76 of both programs. However, DO NOT
  150.          toggle these swithes ON if your version of SCAN and CLEAN are not
  151.          v76. SCAN or CLEAN will issue a warning and refuse to perform any
  152.          operations until you toggle both /NOBREAK and /NOPAUSE off. Please
  153.          be advised that these switches are not needed for access to the
  154.          majority of SCAN or CLEAN functions. You may still use your older
  155.          version of SCAN and CLEAN with TERMINUS. You should eventually
  156.          upgrade to a more recent(v77) version since many new virus have
  157.          been added to the SCAN/CLEAN list of detectables.

  161.               IF you do have v77 of SCAN/CLEAN here is what to expect from
  162.          TERMINUS when /NOBREAK and/or /NOPAUSE are toggled ON!:
  163.  
  164.               1. /NOBREAK will not alter TERMINUS operation directly. Read
  165.                  your SCAN/CLEAN DOCS for how this switch affects McAfee
  166.                  Associates virus programs.
  167.  
  168.               2. /NOPAUSE will alter SCAN/CLEAN and TERMINUS operations.
  169.                  If you are scanning a batch of files with /NOPAUSE toggled
  170.                  ON!, TERMINUS will not stop to display messages based on
  171.                  SCAN/CLEAN DOS return codes(i.e. one or more virus found)
  172.                  It is recommended that you switch /REPORT ON! to capture
  173.                  virus information etc. One convenience of /NOPAUSE is to
  174.                  allow you to start virus identification processing on more
  175.                  than one machine at a time without interruption. Please
  176.                  read SCAN/CLEAN DOCS to find out how this switch effects
  177.                  McAfee Associates virus programs.(disables MORE pause)

  184.               The following improvements were made to TERMINUS V2.0A:

  186.               1. SCAN/CLEAN report viewing was smoothed by adding
  187.                  additional delay time between screen pages.

  189.               2. DOS BATCH files may now be launched from ANY logical
  190.                  drive and/or subdirectory.

  195.               Version 2.0 has TWO HELP keys, F10 which is still displayed
  196.          in the lower function menu bar and F1. Each key produces the same
  197.          result. This addition was made for new users who are normally
  198.          familiar with pressing F1 for HELP in certain other programs.

  203.               THE VIRUS TERMINUS(c) achieves optimum performance when it is
  204.          installed and run from a hard drive. However, it is best to run the
  205.          VIRUS TERMINUS from a floppy if your computer system is known to be
  206.          infected. THE VIRUS TERMINUS(c), SCAN.EXE, CLEAN.EXE and VALIDATE.COM
  207.          will all fit on a 360K floppy provided you follow the installation
  208.          instructions ABOVE or in the program documentation file VTEC.DOC .

  211.               IF you have IBM CGA C80 mode compatibility(you can run programs
  212.          which require color 80 column IBM mode) but utilize a money saving
  213.          green, amber, white etc. monochrome display, start TERMINUS like this
  214.

  217.          Use lower case letters for cga255. This will eliminate window
  218.          background colors and adjust certain other textcolors so you may be
  219.          able to SEE all menu selects, prompts, etc. The mouse will still
  220.          function if you have one. NOTE: TRUE IBM MDA monochrome display
  221.          cards are auto-detected and there is no need for an extra parameter
  222.          when starting TERMINUS in this video mode.
