- FILE: NEW-31LE.DOC (February 13, 1991)
- --------------------------------------
-
- Files included in this interim release 3.1LE:
-
- NEW-31LE.DOC - New features in version 3.1LE
- QFILER.EXE - Interim version 3.1LE
- QFINST.EXE - Install program for QFILER 3.1LE options
- QFILER.DOC + Basic QFILER information manual
- QF-HIST.DOC + Descriptions of previously added features
- QF-ORDER.DOC - Pricing and order form
- QFIND.EXE - "File-find" utility used by QFILER
- OMBUDSMN.ASP - ASP ombudsman statement
-
-
- NEW LHA.EXE SUPPORTED:
- ----------------------
- The file compression utility LHARC.EXE is now distributed as
- LHA.EXE. This version of QFILER (QF) has been tested with the
- beta 2.05 version of LHA (released as the self-extracting file
- LHA205.EXE). QF detects both LHARC.EXE and LHA.EXE, and utilizes
- the new features included in LHA.EXE if it is available. QF
- checks all directories listed in your PATH statement, so you can
- speed things up if the subdirectory containing LHA.EXE (and other
- programs supported by QF) is listed as one of the first
- directories in your "PATH=" statement.
-
- NOTE: A bug was corrected in QF version 3.1LD which resulted in
- LHARC not being recognized.
-
-
- LHA & PKZIP SELF-EXTRACTING EXE'S MAY BE ZOOMED
- -----------------------------------------------
- Self-extracting EXE files created by PKZip, LHArc and LHA are
- treated as "normal" compressed files when Ctrl-Z (PKZip) or
- Ctrl-L (LHArc/LHA) is used. Files may be extracted, viewed and
- zoomed. It's up to you, however, to select the "correct"
- compression utility.
-
-
- EXTENDED SUBDIRECTORY SELECTION:
- --------------------------------
- The parent of subdirectory is now shown as "PARENT" rather than
- <PARENT>. This small change now guarantees the parent listing
- will be the first line shown in a QF window.
-
- Several short-cut keys have been added to QF to facilitate
- subdirectory selection: If a subdirectory is the currently
- selected line in a QF window, pressing ENTER will display that
- directory on the current side of the screen. Pressing the "."
- (period) key at ANY time will display the parent of the current
- directory on the current side; pressing the "<" key will display
- the parent on the left side, while pressing the ">" key will
- display the parent on the right.
-
- Long subdirectory names created with extensions (for example,
- MYBACKUP.001) are now handled correctly in QF's PICK function.
-
-
- QFILER on NETWORKS:
- -------------------
- Although previous versions of QF are widely used on Novell
- networks, feedback indicates that QF sometimes attempted to write
- temporary files to the root directory of a disk -- when a network
- user may not have access to the root directory!
-
- This version of QF allows a path to be defined that QF will use
- to write its temporary files. To implement this feature you must
- create a QFPATH.CFG text file -- which is expected to contain a
- single line indicating a subdirectory path which may be used to
- store temporary files. QFPATH.CFG must be located in a pathed
- directory for which a user has access. The path it identifies
- must also be accessible by a user.
-
- For example, if the subdirectory C:\QFILER is a public directory,
- place the QFPATH.CFG file in that directory. The QFPATH.CFG would
- contain "C:\QFILER". QF will use the defined path to store all
- QFPATH.FILs (used for the PICK option) and to store a temporary
- file created when an ARC-ZOOM function is selected. Network
- managers suggest that a user's local drive may be a good choice
- to use for both the QFPATH.CFG file and the path it contains.
-
- NOTE: While this feature was added to solve problems on networks,
- it is very useful for non-network users as well!
-
-
- OTHER CHANGES:
- --------------
- A bug was corrected which resulted in QF's Ctrl-E function not
- working properly when running under 4DOS.
-
- This version of QF will swap itself to EMS or disk when shelling
- to DOS or executing other programs. This feature may be disabled
- by running QFINST with /SWAP as a command-line parameter (Windows
- doesn't like DOS programs trying to manage memory on their own).
- QF will release all memory except about 30K. NOTE: If you don't
- have EMS memory, you probably will want to disable this feature
- (unless you need large amounts of memory to run other programs
- from within QF) -- swapping to disk is relatively slow!
-
- Pressing ENTER when a .COM, .EXE or .BAT file is currently
- selected will execute that program. Because of a potential
- conflict arising from this use of the ENTER key, bottom menu
- selections are now invoked by pressing the "X" key after a
- function has been selected using the space bar or TAB key.
-
- Running "QFINST /LIST" will let you toggle between our QFLIST and
- Buerg's LIST as the default file viewer. Note that the default
- QFLIST writes it's temporary file to the current directory, while
- some versions of LIST write to the root directory.
-
- Running "QFINST /ALL" displays all the command-line toggles
- accepted by QFINST.
-
- Pressing ESC for FIND and EXECUTE functions will correctly abort
- the action.
-
- This version of QF will handle ZOOM listings of ZIP files that
- contain full paths.
-
- QF now builds a "list" or response file when either PKZip ".ZIP"
- or LHA ".LZH" files are created or extracted. Both PKZIP and LHA
- are invoked with the "@listfile" option, which results in PKZIP
- and LHA running substantially faster.
-
- MOUSE REMINDER:
- ---------------
- QF does support a mouse, but is distributed with mouse support
- DISABLED. (Why? Don't ask!)
-
- If you wish to use a mouse with QF, you must first enable mouse
- support in QF by running "QFINST /MOUSE". Then, before running
- QF, be sure you have installed your mouse driver (typically by
- running MOUSE.COM).
-
-
- SHAREWARE REGISTRATION:
- -----------------------
- If you haven't yet registered your copy of QFILER, please
- consider doing so. Continuing registrations from users
- encourages our continuing enhancements. Quantity pricing is
- available, as well as site licenses. QFILER is one of the lowest
- priced, full-featured utilities available.
-
- Thank you...
