- Microsoft MusicBox
- Version 1.00
-
-
- Microsoft MusicBox is software that turns your CD-ROM drive into a
- programmable CD-Audio player under the control of your PC. The program
- does not use the computer's speaker for output. All output is through the
- CD-ROM drive's headphone jack, RCA jacks or internal speaker (if equipped).
- MusicBox is designed for 286 and 386 machines with 640K of RAM or greater.
-
-
- You can use Microsoft MusicBox in three modes:
-
- MODE TO START
-
- MS-DOS Graphical Program (Default) Type: MUSICBOX
- Windows Program Type: MUSICBOX /W
- Command Line (from DOS prompt) Type: MUSICBOX plus Command
-
-
- Microsoft CD-ROM Extensions Version 2.1 Required
-
- Microsoft MusicBox is intended for use with CD-ROM drives that run
- Microsoft CD-ROM Extensions version 2.1 (MSCDEX 2.1) with a 100% compatible
- device driver. If you are using an earlier version of MSCDEX, some
- functions will be inactive or will not work properly. If you do not have a
- valid MSCDEX Version 2.1 device driver, please call the manufacturer of
- your CD-ROM drive.
-
-
- Use with Audio Discs Only
-
- Microsoft MusicBox is intended for use with CD Audio discs only. It is not
- intended for use with CD-ROM discs that contain only data.
-
-
- Why A Delay Occurs When You Load New Discs
-
- When you load a new CD Audio disc, Microsoft MusicBox reads track-length
- information from it. This requires a short wait.
-
-
- DOS Command Line Instructions
-
- From the DOS prompt (C:\>), you can start an audio disc from the first
- track by typing "MUSICBOX 1". You exercise other controls from the DOS
- prompt as follows:
-
- Command Action
-
- MUSICBOX + Skips to next track if CD is playing
- MUSICBOX - Plays previous track if CD is playing
- MUSICBOX s Stops CD if it is playing
- MUSICBOX p Pauses CD if it is playing
- MUSICBOX r Resumes CD if it is paused
- MUSICBOX <track> Starts playing from track number <track>
- MUSICBOX /<n> Uses CD-ROM drive <n>
-
- (Note: You can enter commands in upper or lower case)
-
-
- The DOS Graphical Version
-
- Start the DOS graphical version by typing "MUSICBOX". You can use the DOS
- graphical version of Microsoft MusicBox with a mouse or from the keyboard.
- To use the mouse, simply click on a function. To use the keyboard, <TAB>
- forward from one "button" to another, use <SHIFT>+<TAB> to move backward,
- or use arrow keys to move between buttons. When the desired button is
- highlighted, press <ENTER> or Spacebar.
-
- Exit the DOS graphical version by pressing <ESCAPE>, or by clicking the
- right button on your mouse.
-
-
- The Windows Version
-
- To run the Windows version of Microsoft MusicBox, you must have Microsoft
- Windows version 2.1 or later on your system and the PATH statement in the
- AUTOEXEC.BAT file must include the Windows directory (PATH=C:\WINDOWS).
- Microsoft MusicBox then invokes Windows on your system when you type
- MUSICBOX /W.
-
- You can use the Windows version of Microsoft MusicBox with a mouse or from
- the keyboard. To use the mouse, simply click on a function. You can begin
- play at a specific track by clicking on the track number above the scroll
- bar. From the keyboard, <TAB> from one "button" to another. When the
- desired button is highlighted, press <ENTER> or Spacebar.
-
-
- Microsoft MusicBox running under Windows has features not available in the
- DOS version:
-
- Feature Control
-
- Shuffle Play Asterisk Button (*)
- Linear Play/AutoRepeat Toggle Arrow/Loop Toggle
- Name the Disc Under Control Menu
- Program Preferred Tracks Under Control Menu
- Display Length of Disc In the "About" Box
-
-
- Shuffle Play Option
-
- By selecting the Asterisk button (*) you can shuffle or randomize the order
- in which tracks are played on a disc.
-
-
- Linear Play/AutoRepeat Toggle
-
- The Arrow/Loop switch allows you to select between a single play through
- your play list and an AutoRepeat which will play the disc over and over.
-
-
- Name the Disc
-
- When you NAME a disc, the name that you specify is displayed at the top of
- the program (when maximized) or with the program icon (when minimized).
- Microsoft MusicBox remembers this name and displays it every time you
- insert that disc into your CD-ROM drive.
-
-
- Program Preferred Tracks
-
- When you select PROGRAM, MusicBox displays a dialog box. Enter desired track
- numbers separated by spaces. If you "Save" your preferred play list of
- tracks (which could be one track, a couple of tracks, or a preferred order
- for all tracks), MusicBox remembers this preference every time you insert
- that audio disc. To return the default play order (tracks 1, 2, 3,...),
- select "Default" under the Program menu.
-
-
- Programmable Options in the Windows Version of CD-Play
-
- You can use the Program selection under the Control menu to choose several
- programmable options:
-
- OPTION COMMAND EXAMPLE

- Repeat selected tracks ! 1 5 9 !
- Repeat single track ! 2 !
- Shuffle play * *
- Shuffle play, then repeat * ! * !
-
- If you mistakenly enter a track number greater than the highest actual
- track number on your audio CD, Microsoft MusicBox ignores the mistake and
- plays all valid tracks specified.
-
-
- Display Length of Disc
-
- If you would like to see the total length of the current disc select ABOUT
- under the Control menu, or click your mouse on the "CD-ROM Digital Audio"
- field.
-
- Notes on Shuffle Play
-
- In the Windows version, you may hear the first second of the next sequential
- track when you are running a "Shuffle Play". Whether this circumstance
- occurs will depend on the clock speed of your PC, the other processes you
- are running on your PC, and the individual audio CD that you are playing.
-
- Notes on Multiple Drive Configurations
-
- If you have more than one CD-ROM drive, you must make the drive
- controlled by MusicBox your Drive #1.
-
