  20. This is an excerpt from the .DOC file that explains how to run StS. the first
  21. time.  Please read.

  23.         >> Sec. 1.1                    INTRODUCTION

  26.              StS has a built in setup program to allow the user to configure
  27.         it to his system and requirements.  This section will guide you
  28.         through the initial execution of the program and also the setup
  29.         program features.

  32.         >> Sec. 1.2              THE STS DEFAULT SETUP
  33.         _____________________________________________________________________

  35.              StS comes pre-configured to run on what is considered the most
  36.         likely system configuration.  It assumes you have an IBM compatible
  37.         video card and that your primary hard disk drive is C:.  Although the
  38.         program is totally re-settable with respect to these parameters, this
  39.         will be your starting point.
  40.  
  41.              StS uses several external utility programs to accomplish the
  42.         tasks of library file handling, editing, and listing.  The default
  43.         pathnames defined for these functions is C:\STEREO.  It is highly
  44.         recommended but not required that you create a sub-directory called
  45.         STEREO on the root directory of your primary hard disk and place
  46.         these files in it;

  48.         PKZIP.EXE   ........ ZIP file packer
  49.         PKUNZIP.EXE ........ ZIP file un-packer
  50.         PKPAK.EXE   ........ ARC file packer
  51.         PKUNPAK.EXE ........ ARC file un-packer

  54.         LIST???.COM ........ ASCII file list program
  55.         E88.EXE     ........ ASCII text editor  (the best)

  57.              If you do not have all of these programs or do not want to move
  58.         them, no problem.  The creation of this sub-directory and the
  59.         availability of all these programs should only be considered as a
  60.         helpful suggestion.

  63.         >> Sec. 1.3            RUNNING StS THE FIRST TIME
  64.         _____________________________________________________________________

  66.              To execute StS, just type in STS at the DOS prompt like you
  67.         would any other program.  StS is not resident or special with respect
  68.         to general operation with one exception.  StS expects to find the
  69.         COMSPEC environment string defined.  In 99% of all cases MS-DOS has
  70.         already done this job for you so no action is required by the user.
  71.         In the event that StS does not find this string, it will report the
  72.         error.  If this happens, then simply add this statement to your
  73.         AUTOEXEC.BAT file.   SET COMSPEC = C:\COMMAND.COM   If you are not
  74.         running a hard disk, you should adjust the drive letter as required.

  76.              When executed, the StS screen will appear on your display, in
  77.         living black and white.  The system defaults are set to direct
  78.         screen writes which allow the program to operate on any type of
  79.         IBM display compatible system.  If your machine is not IBM display
  80.         compatible, you will need to specify the /B switch on the DOS command
  81.         line to force StS to use BIOS screen writes.   ie. STS /B
  82.  
  83.              Users of very old IBM CGA cards may experience display "fetches"
  84.         or "snow" on the display when StS is running.  StS has a snow
  85.         suppression option which may be used to correct this problem.

  88.         To turn snow suppression on:
  89.  
  90.         (1.) Press the <Alt> <S> key pair to go into setup mode.
  91.         (2.) Press the <F1> function key to set Screen and Mouse settings.
  92.         (3.) Press the <F1> function key to toggle Snow suppression < ON>
  93.         (4.) Press the <Esc> key when you are finished playing with the other
  94.              options.
  95.         (5.) Press the <F4> key to save the change and exit setup mode.
