  29.     Yes, we could have set up an 800 order line.  There are plenty of long
  30. distance companies tripping over each other to hook us up but we didn't want
  31. to impose this added expense on our users.  Unless a company is doing a
  32. tremendous volume and receiving a significant quantity discount on long
  33. distance service, toll free numbers can result in higher customer costs. The
  34. cost of toll free telephone service is passed on to the customer in the
  35. form of higher product costs.  The customer who places an order over a
  36. toll-free line not only pays for his own call, he also pays for all the calls
  37. from those folks who "just wanted some information".  What it boils down to
  38. is that not having a "toll free" telephone number probably results in the
  39. lowest bottom line cost to the consumer.  The customer pays for his own call
  40. only, and those who "just want information" pay for their own calls.  Simple.
