- More than a few times in the past, users of my DirX program have contacted
- me asking about the availability of some of the compression utilities
- mentioned in DIRX.DOC, or alluded to in the sample DIRX.CFG files I've been
- including in my distribution archives for DirX (DRX???.ZIP).
-
- Below I've incorporated, in database form, information on those utilities,
- plus a few more, which I've gleaned from various sources. By no means do I
- make any warranty that the information is completely accurate, or
- up-to-date. The authors of any of the below mentioned programs,
- especially, are welcome to contact me with more timely information.
-
- For each program listed below I indicate:
-
- 1) the main program filename
-
- 2) the most recent version number of which I have personal knowledge, and,
- as far as I could determine, either the program date, or the earliest
- file date (not necessarily reliable)
-
- 3) whether or not it is intended to be used with .COM, .EXE and data files
-
- 4) the author, or owner, of the program
-
- 5) how the program is distributed: public domain, freeware, shareware or
- commercial.
-
- 6) if available on CompuServe, then which forum and library carries a copy
- of the distribution archive, and the filename(s) of the archive(s)
- (there may be other forums on CIS which make the programs available, but
- I just list the ones with which I'm most familiar)

- Calling this utility an executable file compressor may be doing it an
- injustice. It may be loosely described as an archiver-type utility with
- the added capability of functioning as an executable file compressor. The
- first version of DIET appeared to be a stripped-down version of LEXEM, with
- only the executable file compression features left in.

- I've only seen two public releases of this utility, Versions 0.90 and 0.91.
- I've read that the author has sold his rights to the program, so don't look
- for any future public domain releases of LZEXE.

- This is PKLITE Professional. The main *functional* difference between it
- and the shareware version seems to be the extra-compression option (-e
- switch), which produces "unextractable" compressed files. Executable files
- created by PKLITE Professional can be used and distributed for commercial
- use.

- Software developers can easily include self-configuration information with
- TINYPROG'ed programs.

- AXE, LEXEM, TINYPROG, SHRINK, EXECUTRIX, SCRNCH, ICE, or EXEPACK, plus ID's
- WINDOWS .EXE files, overlay files, & misnamed .EXE & .COM files. Output
- sortable & redirectable. Subdirs. can be looped thru. NEW: shows extra

- Smaller, simpler version of DirX for when you just want a listing of
- compressed and uncompressed files. Listing is redirectable to printer or
- file. Mimicks DOS's DIR command, to an extent. No sorting is performed.
- New: Extends recognition of files compressed with LZEXE (hacked headers)
- and DIET (additional headers).

- PROGRAM: UNLZEXE.EXE v0.5, 05/17/90
- .COM: No

- CIS LIB: IBMSYS/Lib 6
- ARCH NAME: UNLZEX.COM
- Although the purpose of this program is to uncompress files previously
- compressed by either version of LZEXE, in most cases you don't get an exact
- replica of the original .EXE file, just a functional equivalent. If you
- choose to compress your executables with LZEXE, it may be prudent to back up
- the originals first. (This is true for executable file compressors in
- general, but *especially* true for LZEXE.)
-
- PROGRAM: UPACKEXE.EXE v1.00, 01/02/90
- .COM: No
- .EXE: Yes
- DATA: No
- AUTHOR: Bellard, Fabrice
- DISTR: Public Domain
- CIS LIB: IBMSYS/Lib 6
- ARCH NAME: LZEX91.ZIP, LZEXE9.ZIP
- This was a utility distributed with Version 0.91 of LZEXE, which was
- intended to be used to unpack files compressed with EXEPACK.
- Unfortunately, it didn't always recognize, and therefore didn't work with,
- all "EXEPACKed" files. However, recently, a utility has been made
- available to patch UPACKEXE.EXE (see UPACKFIX.EXE).
-
- PROGRAM: UPACKFIX.EXE vn/a, 07/10/91
- .COM: No
- .EXE: Yes
- DATA: No
- AUTHOR: Piotrowski, John F.
- DISTR: Freeware
- CIS LIB: IBMSYS/Lib 6
- ARCH NAME: UPACKF.ZIP
- Purports to patch Bellard's original UPACKEXE.EXE utility to allow it to
- decompress files compressed in the newer EXEPACK formats.

- By the time you read this, it's conceivable that later versions of these
- programs will be made available. If you attempt to search for any of these
- files on CompuServe, please be aware that the names of distribution
- archives which incorporate version numbers may change, if a later version
- is uploaded. Thus, if a first attempt doesn't turn up the names I've shown
- above, you might try using the wildcard character '*' in place of the
- embedded version number. Example: If you can't find 'PKL113.EXE', you
- might search for the filespec 'PKL*'. You could also search on an
- appropriately chosen KEYWORD - 'DIET' for DIET-related files, for example.
-
- If all else fails, you might simply ask in the appropriate forum.
