- Warning, if you value your time and money, avoid any dealings
- with Micro 1 (557 Howard Street, San Francisco, CA). These
- people made a mockery of the FTC rules which are supposed to
- protect mail order customers. In mid December, 1988, they took
- my prepaid order for a '386 system, sent no written acknowledge-
- ment (but after repeated inquiries did finally fax an invoice 2
- months later), and continually promised to ship "next week" until
- late April. At that time they were shut down by the US attorney
- and the owner, Rick McCabe, sold the company. The new owner
- immediately filed for bankruptcy and says that, if the company
- survives, it will be several years before any refunds are made.
-
- Adding insult to injury, Micro 1 received an editor's choice in a
- May 30, 1988 PC Magazine review of '386 machines. On seeing this
- I called Micro 1, pretending to be a new customer, and they made
- no mention of any problems.
-
- I publicly accuse Rick McCabe and Micro 1 of theft by mail fraud.
- This accusation does not extend to the new owner, who is appar-
- ently just trying to turn around a failed business.
-
- My $7K is gone, but perhaps I can save someone else from the same
- fate. When ordering an expensive item by mail, paying by credit
- card or C.O.D. gives you protection you don't have if you prepay.
-
- Please give this file the widest possible distribution.
