  144.         A.BACKGROUND
  145.              
  146.              4DOS provides a way of attaching descriptions to files
  147.         on your disk that is apparently seamless.  The descriptions
  148.         appear on directory displays and automatically are copied
  149.         when you COPY or MOVE a file to another disk or directory.
  150.  
  151.             But this seamless property fails as soon as you use other
  152.         programs on your files.  For example, if you archive the files
  153.         with the PKware programs PKZIP or PKUNZIP, the descriptions
  154.         stay behind.  4ZIP and 4UNZIP address this problem, providing
  155.         an automatic method to store descriptions in ZIPFiles and to
  156.         restore them when you extract a file.
  157.  
  158.              4DOS keeps a DESCRIPT.ION file in each directory. You should 
  159.         know that this is a hidden file.  You will not see it in the DOS 
  160.         directory unless you change the file attribute or use the 4DOS DIR /h
  161.         option.  4UNZIP inserts file descriptions into this hidden file or
  162.         creates a new one if necessary.

  164.             You must have copies of the PKware utilities located on the 
  165.         DOS Path, or in the current directory.  These shareware programs 
  166.         are not supplied with 4ZIP/4UNZIP.  You can obtain them from many
  167.         Shareware distributors, BBS's or from PKware directly at:

  175.         B. 4ZIP USAGE
  176.  
  177.              4ZIP Usage is:
  178.  
  179.   4ZIP ZIPFILE [/am?] [d:][path][filespec] [+filespec] [+..]
  180.  
  181.              A directory display similar to that of SELECT will appear
  182.         showing all of the files meeting any of the filespecs. This
  183.         use of include lists is identical to the 4DOS 3.0 DIR and
  184.         SELECT usage.  Note that only the first argument in an include 
  185.         list can have a pathname; subsequent arguments default to the 
  186.         same path.

  188.              You can mark files to be ZIPped into ZipFile in several
  189.         ways, similar to the 4DOS SELECT command, as follows:

  191.                 <+>     MARK file
  192.                 <->     UNMARK file
  193.                 <space> Toggle MARK
  194.                 <*>     MARK all files

  198.              To move the selection bar around the list of files, use
  199.         the following keys:

  201.                 <UP>    Move up one line
  202.                 <DOWN>  Move down one line
  203.                 <PgUp>  Move up one full screen
  204.                 <PgDn>  Move down one full screen
  205.                 <HOME>  Move to top of list
  206.                 <END>   Move to end of list

  208.              When you are finished marking files, then:

  210.                 <ENTER> ZIP marked files into ZIPFILE
  211.                 <Esc>   Quit 4ZIP without doing anything
  212.  
  213.              4ZIP also has two options, which can be used singly or
  214.         together, e.g., /a /m, or /am.
  215.  
  216.         /a  ZIP all files matching filespecs without query.
  217.  
  218.                 4ZIP Junk /a  C:\SOURCE\*.Pas + *MATH*.INC
  219.  
  220.             would ZIP into JUNK.ZIP all files from the C:\SOURCE 
  221.             directory that either had the extension PAS or the
  222.             extension INC and MATH anywhere in the filename.

  224.         /m  Move selected files from source directory to the ZIPFile.
  225.  
  226.             This works by deleting the files from the source
  227.             directory after ZIPping.

  230.         C. 4UNZIP USAGE
  231.  
  232.              4UNZIP Usage is:
  233.  
  234.   4UNZIP ZIPFILE [/adm?] [outpath] [d:][path][filespec] [+filespec] [+..]
  235.  
  236.              The display is identical to the 4ZIP display, showing
  237.         all the files in the ZipFile that meet any of the filespecs.
  238.         Marking of the files to be extracted and cursor movement
  239.         around the screen is identical to 4ZIP.

  241.              4UNZIP has three options.  The first two are similar to 
  242.         the ones provided for 4ZIP.
  243.  
  244.         /a  UNZIP all files matching filespecs without query.        
  245.         /m  Move selected files from the ZIPFile to the outpath
  246.             directory (Current directory is default).
  247.  
  248.         /d  Delete selected files from the ZIPFile without extracting.
  249.  
  250.         This provides a convenient tool for ZipFile management,
  251.         allowing you to select files to be removed using any
  252.

  255.         combination of filespecs with wild cards and the SELECT screen.
  256.         The combination /ad will delete all the specified files
  257.         without presenting the SELECT screen.  The combination /md
  258.         is interpreted the same as /m alone.

  260.         Outpath, if supplied, determines the directory in which the
  261.         extracted files are to be placed.  So for example
  262.  
  263.                  4UNZIP C:\SOURCE\JUNK A:\ /am *.doc
  264.  
  265.         would extract all of the files with extension doc from the
  266.         file  C:\SOURCE\JUNK.ZIP and place them in the root directory
  267.         of the A: drive.  Then it would delete all of these files
  268.         from JUNK.ZIP.

  271.         C. REGARDING REGISTRATION
  272.  
  273.              4ZIP/4UNZIP is ShareWare. The law requires that if you use 
  274.         this program, you must register and obtain a license for it. The 
  275.         registration fee is $15.  A registration form is included at the 
  276.         end of this manual.

  278.              Registered users will be notified of upgrades to 4ZIP/4UNZIP as
  279.         they are released, and will receive the latest version of the
  280.         program.  Online help is available through CompuServe, by
  281.         EasyPlex.  Help is also available by mail. I will try to answer 
  282.         all letters within 48 hours. Non-registered users must include 
  283.         a SASE for a reply. The degree of help available to non-registered

  324.     4ZIP and 4UNZIP now stand alone, and can be run under DOS.  4UNZIP
  325.     accesses the ZipFile Directory itself without using PKZIP -v. This is

  371.              Also take a look at 4EDIT, a full-screen editor for dir- 
  372.         ectory comments (or, in 4DOS terms, Descriptions). I think you 
  373.         will find it very useful.  Its good practice to comment your 
  374.         files, and often its handy to see the descriptions attached to 
  375.         other files, while you are writing a new one.
