- 4DOS 4.0 ==> 4.01 Patch Documentation

- Version 4.01 -- June 8, 1992

-
-
- This file explains how the 4DOS 4.01 patch update works and how to
- install it.
-
- The patch update converts your current registered copy of 4DOS 4.0 to
- version 4.01. JP Software uses the RTPatch software update package from
- PocketSoft Inc. to generate "patches" which contain all of the
- differences between the version 4.0 and 4.01 files. You then apply
- these patches to your copy of 4DOS 4.0 to upgrade it to version 4.01.
- The patches and patching program together are about 50% smaller than the
- actual version 4.01 files, so they take only about half as long to
- download, and can be distributed on a single disk if necessary.
-
- The patch is designed for registered users who want to update from
- version 4.0 to version 4.01, and who have version 4.0 files dated
- November 18, 1991. The patch process retains your branding information,
- so your new copy of 4DOS will still be branded properly (whether
- shareware or registered).
-
- [The patch will be partially successful with version 4.0 shareware files
- dated 11-18-91. Some of the version 4.0 shareware documentation files
- will not be updated, because the patch process only updates the files
- included with the registered version. This may cause difficulty because
- the README.DOC file is different in the shareware version. It therefore
- will not be patched, and you will not have access to the new README
- file, which explains (among other things) how to install version 4.01.
- In this situation you will have to rely on the similar version 4.0
- installation instructions in the older README.DOC file.]
-
- The patch consists of three files:
-
- PATCH.EXE The patching program.
- PATCH401.RTP The actual patch data (data for all 4DOS
- files to be patched is included in this
- single file).
- PATCH401.DOC This file.
-
- To convert your copy of 4DOS 4.0 to version 4.01, use the following
- procedure:
-
- (1) To avoid patching your working copy of 4DOS, copy all of your
- version 4.0 files to a new disk or directory (we suggest the
- directory name \4DOS401). This probably is not necessary, as the
- patch process has a number of built-in safeguards in case of any
- difficulty. However we feel it is still best to be prudent,
- because 4DOS is used when your computer boots and any problems in
- patching it could leave you without a bootable system. Be sure
- that you copy the README.DOC file, or PATCH will not be able to
- create the new README.DOC which contains installation
- instructions for version 4.01.
-
- (2) Copy the PATCH.EXE and PATCH401.RTP files to the new
- directory.
-
- (3) Change to the new directory.
-
- (4) Enter the command:
-
- PATCH . PATCH401
-
- Note that a "." is required between "PATCH" and "PATCH401".
-
- (5) The PATCH program will give a sign-on message, then begin the
- patching process. As each file is patched it is verified. PATCH
- will display messages during the patching process and a summary
- at the end. To check the patched and unpatched files, use the
- 4DOS command:
-
- dir /ot/p
-
- This displays the directory sorted by date and time, and pauses
- at the end of each screen. Any unpatched version 4.0 files will
- be dated 11-18-91 at 4:00; patched version 4.01 files will be
- dated 06-08-91 at 4:01. The UPDATE40.DOC file will not be
- patched; this is normal. Three new files which did not exist in
- 4DOS 4.0 will be created: ORDERINF.DOC, UPDAT401.DOC and
- ASCTAB.TXT. Also, three files are the same as in version 4.0 and
- will have only their date and time changed; these are ALIASES,
- TOUR1.BTM, and TOUR2.BTM.
-
- (6) Look through the installation instructions in the new
- README.DOC, and modify your CONFIG.SYS and other startup files to
- use the new version of 4DOS.
-
- (7) Once you have version 4.01 up and running you can delete your
- old version 4.0 files if you like.
-
- There are a few additional things you should be aware of when running
- PATCH:
-
- ** If your version 4.0 4DOS.COM file has been compressed with
- PKLITE, DIET, or a similar program, PATCH will not update it.
-
- ** Similarly, if you have edited or modified any other 4DOS files in
- any way (other than BRANDing 4DOS), PATCH will not update them.
- Only the original, unmodified files from the November 18, 1991
- version of 4DOS can be patched.
-
- ** PATCH will ignore missing files, so if you copy only some of your
- 4DOS 4.0 files to the new directory, only those files will be
- updated. You can copy additional files later and rerun the PATCH
- command to update them; this may cause some harmless error
- messages when PATCH finds some of the files have already been
- patched.
