- This utility copies a tape! I'm in the process of making more 3s400
- master tapes, but if you need it, you can now make your own.

-
- Chris, attached are the TCopy.exe and tape.sys files you'll need to
- duplicate tapes.
-
- If the tape.sys you have on your 3s/400 is dated sometime in October
- of last year, you need not replace it; however, if it's earlier, you'll
- need the version I've supplied. Simply rename tape.sys on your 3s/400
- to something like tape.sav, and copy the attached version into the
- root on C: of the 3s/400. After making the copies, you should rename
- the new tape.sys to something like tape.new, and rename tape.sav to
- tape.sys. That way, you'll be back to a standard configuration.
-
- Note that this software runs under 3+ ONLY; 3+ Open is not yet
- supported. It will be when they finish the software for the new
- Exabyte tape drives.
-
- The steps you must follow (to reiterate our phone conversation),
- assuming you've got the correct tape.sys on the 3s/400 are as follows:
-
- 1) Unhook the 3s/400 from the network.
-
- 2) Use a single, terminated network cable to attach a PC to the 3s/400.
- Note that the more horsepower the PC has, the faster things will go.
- An AT is abysmally slow in talking to the 3s/400, but a'386 is very
- fast.
-
- 3) Put the 3s/400 in maintenance mode (position 1 on the thumbwheel),
- and boot it.
-
- 4) Use the 3+ 286 workstation diskette to boot your PC. This diskette
- will work quite sufficiently for a '386 as well.
-
- 5) Remove the boot diskette from drive A, insert the 3+ 3s/400 System
- Software diskette in drive A and issue a 3c start command.
-
- 6) Once the 3s/400 is up and running, remove the 3s/400 System Software
- diskette, and insert the diskette containing TCopy.exe (Yep, you'll
- have to put it on diskette before starting these steps. I just
- realized that.) Copy TCopy.exe to your favorite location on the
- 3s/400. I suggest its own directory on the C: drive.
-
- 7) Change directories to the partition to contain the image of the
- master tape, and issue the TCopy command. TCopy is most efficient
- if the partition which will contain the tape image is large enough
- to contain the entire image. If it isn't, TCopy will attempt to
- path to the next partition to continue writing the data. This
- will complicate your interaction with TCopy, as you might be
- prompted for the next partition to be used, or TCopy might fail
- if it can't find a next partition.
-
-
- Assuming that you put TCopy on C:\tcopy, that your file to
- contain the image is d:\master.img, and that you want five copies
- of the tape, the command would look something like
-
- >>c:\tcopy\tcopy -iD:\MASTER.IMG -c5
-
-
- 8) You will be prompted by the software to be sure that the master
- tape is in the tape drive. Once this is done, you must press
- Carriage Return (or Enter) to start the duplication.
-
- THIS IS IMPORTANT: Once you insert the tape, you must let the tape
- driver seek to the beginning of tape before you press Carriage
- Return (or Enter)!!!!!!! This is true for inserting ANY tape,
- master, or otherwise. If you don't wait until the tape settles
- down, the attempt by tcopy to open the tape device will fail, and
- TCopy will terminate with an error. Wait about 15 seconds after
- inserting the tape just to be safe. Once the tape drive's light
- has gone off, and stays off for 5 seconds or so, it's safe to
- proceed.
-
- 9) For each megabyte of data on the tape, you've got around 1 minute
- during which the tape image is being created, so if it's a 30 mb
- tape, you've got 30 minutes before you need to return to the 3s/
- 400. Might as well take a break.
-
- 10) Once the master image has been created, you'll be prompted to
- remove it and place a blank tape in the drive. The tape doesn't
- have to be blank, as any previous data will be overwritten.
- Make SURE THAT THE blank tape is NOT WRITE PROTECTED before
- inserting it into the tape drive. Also note the caveat about
- allowing the tape drive to settle down before pressing Carriage
- Return or Enter above.
-
- 11) Repeat step 10 until all copies have been made.
-
- That's it. Have fun
-
- Paul W.
