  12.           There are several commercial products available that allow
  13.           sharing of a fax board across a network. Some of them are pretty
  14.           good, but for the most part they are pretty high-priced. If
  15.           you're on a large network and can justify the cost, great. If, on
  16.           the other hand, you have a fairly small network and spending a
  17.           few thousand dollars is a bit much, give FAXPak NetShare a try.
  18.  
  19.           FAXPak NetShare allows all the users on a PC network to share a
  20.           single Intel fax board (SatisFAXtion or Connection Coprocessor).
  21.           Two versions of the "fax server" program are included: a
  22.           dedicated version and a non-dedicated one. The dedicated version
  23.           takes over complete use of the fax PC whereas the non-dedicated
  24.           one runs as a TSR (background) program allowing you to continue
  25.           to use that PC for other programs.
  26.  
  27.           Also included are two programs that are run by the users of the
  28.           network: FPNETFAX is used to send the faxes and FPNETLOG is used
  29.           to view the log of fax results.

  31.           FPNETFAX is a fill-in-the-blanks type program that is used to
  32.           specify the destination of the fax, the files to send, time to
  33.           send etc. This program also allows each user to maintain one (or
  34.           more) "phone books" of commonly faxed numbers. Also supported are
  35.           faxes to multiple destinations, scheduling faxes to be done when
  36.           phone rates are lowest, automatic re-trying of faxes that don't
  37.           get completed, cover page text entry, and many other handy
  38.           features.

  40.           The log program (FPNETLOG) allows one or many logs to be
  41.           maintained. For example, each user of the network can have a log
  42.           just of his own faxes. Or, you may prefer a single log for the
  43.           entire network. The log contains the usual information about when
  44.           the fax was sent, how long it took, the name of the file(s) sent,
  45.           an error messages, the number of transmission errors that
  46.           occurred, etc.

  49.           UNIQUE FEATURES

  52.           I've tried to write FAXPak NetShare in an "open" manner to allow
  53.           programmers and integrators some flexibility in using the fax
  54.           server from custom programs. For example, how many network fax
  55.           programs allow DOS BATCH files to be used to send faxes? FAXPak
  56.           NetShare does. Also, any computer language can be easily used to
  57.           send faxes through the server. This includes all of the xBase
  58.           derivatives like dBase, FoxBase, FoxPro, and Clipper. Any
  59.           programming environment that allows the creating of ASCII files
  60.           may be used!

  68.           All of the FAXPak NetShare programs are controlled by
  69.           initialization files (.INI) which are plain text and can be
  70.           modified with any editor. These .INI files allow many customizing
  71.           options that make use on a network a "piece of cake".

  73.           The non-dedicated server also has "external program execution"
  74.           features. This allows other programs to be "hooked" to the server
  75.           for the purpose of printing incoming faxes AND for the purpose of
  76.           TRANSLATING word processing document files into faxable files.
  77.           This means that you can use your favorite word processor to
  78.           create documents containing all of the fonts and graphics you
  79.           like then have FAXPak NetShare run a conversion program to
  80.           convert that file into a faxable file before sending it.

  82.           FAXPak NetShare comes with an "install" program that makes
  83.           getting started easy.

  86.           HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS

  89.           In keeping with the "small" is beautiful theory, the non-
  90.           dedicated server programs requires only 16k of memory (may be
  91.           loaded high if you have a memory manager that does that sort of
  92.           thing). The dedicated server runs in 256k of memory. It will run
  93.           on any compatible PC but running on a 286 or better is
  94.           recommended (especially if using any "external" programs).

  96.           The "user" programs run in 256k of memory as well.

  98.           FAXPak NetShare expects to find that your Intel fax board was
  99.           installed according to the Intel recommendations. Most
  100.           importantly, it should NOT be installed on a network PC without
  101.           it's own local hard disk!

  130.           FILE TRANSLATION PACKAGE

  133.           An add-on package is available that includes the following items:

  135.                ■ LaserFAX from Crandell Development Corporation
  136.                This is a file translation program that accepts as input a
  137.                file containing HP PCL codes and converts that file into a
  138.                DCX file which is the format required by the Intel fax
  139.                boards. This program can be integrated into the server so
  140.                that files are converted by the server PC automatically
  141.                before being faxed.

  143.                ■ FPWINMAC
  144.                This is a macro for use with Microsoft Word for Windows that
  145.                allows the document to be faxed without leaving Word.

  147.                ■ FPWPMAC
  148.                Macro for use with Word Perfect (5.1) that allows faxing
  149.                from within Word Perfect.

  151.                ■ FPPrint
  152.                Prints Intel fax files to an HP laser printer (or
  153.                compatible). When integrated with FAXPak NetShare, received
  154.                faxes can be printed  automatically when they arrive.

  157.                This is a "command line" oriented program (similar to FPSEND
  158.                in FAXPak) that is used to send faxes from the DOS command
  159.                prompt.

  162.           Word for Windows, Word Perfect, the DOS command line, or by using
  163.           FPNETFAX. They can fax files that contain fancy fonts and

  171.           If you are adept at the macro language of any product, you will
  172.           find that writing macros to interface with FAXPak NetShare will
  173.           be easy. The interface point is (what I call) a FAX CONTROL FILE.
  174.           This is a plain text file that is placed in a specific network
  175.           directory. It contains commands that the fax server processes.

  192.           maintained by FAXPak NetShare are all PLAIN TEXT files that are
  193.           formatted just about like a fax control file so you can easily

  212.           FPNSTSR.EXE) is licensed for use on a single PC with a compatible
  213.           fax board. The "user" programs (FPNETFAX and FPNETLOG) may be
  214.           used by any number of networked PCs to communicate with the fax
  215.           server program.

  218.           WHAT ABOUT WINDOWS?

  221.           None of the programs are Microsoft Windows programs, but may be
  222.           run in a DOS session if desired. Running the TSR server with
  223.           Windows is done "at your own risk"! It is not specifically non-
  224.           Windows compatible, but running any TSR with Windows can be an
  225.           exciting and fun-filled adventure.
