-
- EZMAIL is an on-line electronic mail system designed to be
- used under the PC and UNIX environments connected via the
- Ethernet local area network (LAN).
-
- EZMAIL will allow a user to easily receive, view, print,
- delete, create and send electronic mail through the LAN
- connection without actually logging in to the UNIX
- environment. This is both a faster and more preferred
- method of checking your mail; allowing the PC to handle most
- of the processing workload and reducing the overhead of the
- UNIX system by eliminating the need to log in to the UNIX
- environment.
-
-
-
-
-
- WHERE DID EZMAIL COME FROM?
-
- EZMAIL was designed and developed by a DSAC Team. Program-
- mers from DSAC-O, DSAC-F, DSAC-T worked together in an
- attempt to produce a user-friendly, PC-based email system
- system to fill a DSAC-O MPCASS project requirement.
-
- EZMAIL is a client / server based model. Using the SUN
- microsystems(tm) PcNFS Programmer's Toolkit and the C
- language platform, a socket level interface between the PC
- and the UNIX systems was established.
-
-
-
-
-
- WHY SHOULD I USE EZMAIL?
-
- Some benefits of EZMAIL are:
-
- 1. A faster, more user-friendly electronic mail
- application.
-
- 2. Compatibility between QOFFICE, ELM and UNIX MAIL
- users.
-
- 3. Significant reduction of UNIX workload and overhead.
-
- 4. Manage electronic mail on multiple machines from a
- single PC.
-
- 5. Small file (ASCII, ENABLE, EXE, etc.) transfer
- capability.
-
- 6. EZMAIL is owned by DSAC and may be freely
- distributed.
-
-
- There are three "rules" to remember when using EZMAIL.
-
- 1. If you are going to use EZMAIL, you will need to use
- it exclusively. That means that when you start using
- EZMAIL, your mail will be marked in such a way that
- the other mail programs (i.e. Qoffice, ELM and UNIX
- MAIL) will NOT be able to access that mail. But there
- is no problem as long as you use EZMAIL each time you
- want to check your mail.
-
- 2. You will need to send ALL mail to ALIASES instead of
- USER IDS. This is a requirement since mail sent to
- USER IDS does not always get placed into a user's
- correct "home directory", but mail sent to ALIASES
- will.
-
- 3. Always read your mail from your "home directory"
- system. Example: Your home directory is located on
- the DMINSG1, you would "tell" EZMAIL to use DMINSG1 as
- your mail "SYSTEM".
-
-
-
-
-
- HOW DO I INSTALL EZMAIL?
-
- EZMAIL can be run from a floppy disk, but it is recommended
- that you run it from a harddisk based system. The steps for
- installing EZMAIL onto a harddisk based system are listed
- below:
-
- (Please see your PC point of contact.)
-
- or, try the following lines for the do it yourself'er in
- you...
-
- (exit or return to DOS)
- C:\> net use m: \\dsacg2\tmp\ezmail (ENTER KEY)
- C:\> m: (ENTER KEY)
- M:\> install (ENTER KEY)
-
- And now, EZMAIL will AUTOMATICALLY install itself onto your
- harddisk. Then you just add EZMAIL to your menu system, or
- execute it directly from DOS by typing the following:
-
- C:\> CD \EZMAIL (ENTER KEY)
- C:\EZMAIL> EZMAIL (ENTER KEY)
-
-
-
-
-
- HOW DO I USE EZMAIL? (THE VERY FIRST TIME)
-
- Run the EZMAIL program (either from the DOS prompt line
- by typing EZMAIL, or from the menu option). Your screen
- should have a dialog box asking for profile information the
- first time you run EZMAIL. (You may change this profile
- information at any time in the future by selecting the
- OPTIONS menu and then the CHANGE PROFILE option from the
- main menu.) Then complete your profile information as
- follows:
-
- 1. Enter your First Name, (example: John or Jane)
-
- 2. Enter your Last Name, (example: Doe)
-
- 3. Enter your USER ID, (example: doe1234)
-
- 4. Enter your "home directory" system, (example: dminsg1)
-
- 5. Enter your choice of an editor for editing mail while
- using EZMAIL (default is PED)
-
- 6. Enter your choice of an viewer for viewing mail while
- using EZMAIL (default is Vbrowse)
-
- NOTE: We now have a NEW editor called PED.EXE, which is the
- default editor of choice. It was written for the public
- domain by Bob Foley and DLA was given unrestricted use of it
- for in-house and DLA distribution.
-
- Only small editors will work, ENABLE is too large. The
- default editor works very well and has many options.
-
- After you have finished entering your profile information,
- the EZMAIL main menu will appear. From this main menu you
- are able to select any of the options listed below:
-
-
- Send Receive Options Help Quit
-
-
- To select between the different menu options, you may use
- the TAB key or press the first character of the menu option,
- but the CURSOR or ARROW keys are more commonly used to move
- left and right to select a menu option. Then press the
- RETURN or ENTER key to "pull down" the menu for sub-options.
- The CURSOR or ARROW keys can then be used to move up and
- down to select a sub-menu option. The following pages will
- discuss each menu option including their sub-options.
-
- After you select one of the sub-options listed above, a
- scrollable window will appear listing basic information for
- each piece of mail that has been sent to you. Scroll
- through the list until you have highlighted the piece of
- mail that you want to work with, then press RETURN, ENTER or
- F4 to perform the selected option to that highlighted piece
- of mail.
-
-
-
-
-

- screen will give you this help file of the function key
- descriptions.
-
-
- F2: View
-
- To view a highlighted piece of mail, use the F2 function
- key. This will bring down the mail to the file 'EZMAIL.REC'
- and EZMAIL will immediately take you into this file using
- either the default viewer or the viewer of your choice,
- unless if the file was sent as a 'BINARY SEND'. If the file
- was sent thru 'BINARY SEND', the mail will be decoded into a
- file in the EZMAIL directory and you will be notified of the
- file name.
-
-
- F3: Print*
-
- To print a highlighted piece of mail to your PC printer, use
- the F3 function key. This will print the file to the device
- that is defined for use by the DOS 'PRN' command (normally
- LPT1:). After every 56 lines, EZMAIL will automatically

- name selected. The F4: Save option also allows for doing
- multiple saves at one time by previously marking the file
- with the F5: Tag/Untag key.
-
-
- F5: Tag/Untag(*)
-
- To do multiple file deletes, you must use the F5 function
- key to tag a highlighted piece of mail with a '*'. After

- marked file, highlight the piece of tagged mail and select
- F5 to untag the mail.
-
-
- F6: Delete
-
- To delete the highlighted piece of mail, select the function
- key F6. The highlighted mail will be deleted from the Host
- server. To do a multiple mail delete, first select the mail
- to be deleted with the F5 function key. After doing this,

- all the tagged files from the Host server.
-
-
- F7: Qfilter

- To filter the highlighted mail, select the function key F7.
- EZMAIL will run the Qoffice style document through EZFILTER
- which will filter out the Qoffice specific characters.

- in which case you will have to refilter the mail message.
-
-
- F8: Forward
-
- To forward the highlighted mail, select the function key F8.
- EZMAIL will then ask you if you would like to edit the high-
- lighted mail (Y/N) and either edit(Y) or continue(N) depen-
- ding on your input character. EZMAIL will then ask you if
- you would like to forward this mail to one address or many
- addresses. If you select to mail to one address, you will
- then be prompted to enter the destination user's alias. If
- you select to do a mail many, you will then be prompted to
- enter a mailing list. After entering a subject, EZMAIL will
- forward the mail and when it is done, you will be returned
- to the 'RECEIVE' menu mail screen.
-
-
- F9: Reply
-
- To reply to the highlighted mail, select the function key F9.
- EZMAIL will allow you to edit the highlighted mail after it
- has reformated the mail message to show the original message
- mail by the sender. EZMAIL will then show you the Mail To
- prompt with the recipient address and will allow you to use
- it or to enter a new address. EZMAIL will then show you the
- subject and allow you to change it. EZMAIL will send the
- mail and when it is done, you will be returned to the
- 'RECEIVE' menu mail screen.
-

-
- Change Profile
- Maillist Edit
- View DOS Mailbox
- Shell To DOS
- EZ Update
-
-
- What Do I Need To Know About My Profile?
-
- If you wish to change your profile information, you may do
- so by selecting the OPTIONS menu and then the CHANGE PROFILE
- option. Enter the user profile information in the profile
- window, or ESCAPE to leave the window with NO changes.
- The first and last names are your own name. The userid is
- your DMINS system login. The system name is your home DMINS
- system. The editor will be used by the 'SEND' menu, with
- PED being the default. The viewer will be the program to
- view all your mail in the 'RECEIVE' menu, with Vbrowse being
- the default. After all the information is entered, your
- password will be checked against your USER ID. Only a valid
- password will be allowed to send and receive mail.
-
-
- What About Mailing Lists?
-
- If you wish to edit your mailing list information, you may
- do so by selecting the OPTIONS menu and then the MAILING
- LIST option. The editor will be loaded and the mailing list
- file will appear on your screen. Enter each user's ALIAS on
- a seperate line. Remember to save this file before exiting.
- It is important to use ONLY the user's ALIAS and not their
- USER ID, otherwise they may not receive the mail. The
- default mailing list file is EZMAIL.LST, but you could use
- any filename of your choice, as long as you use that same
- filename when MAILING MANY from the SEND menu.
-
-
- Can I View A DOS Mailbox File?
-
- If you wish to view/edit your PC Mailbox file(s) residing on
- your PC, you may do so by selecting the 'OPTIONS' menu and
- then the 'VIEW DOS MAILBOX' option. The viewer of your
- choice will load the PC Mailbox file (Vbrowse is the
- default) for viewing or editing. The default PC Mailbox
- file is 'EZMAIL.BOX', however, you may enter another PC
- Mailbox file of your choice by typing in the file name or a
- '?' to get a directory listing.
-
-
- What Is Shelling To DOS?
-
- Shelling to DOS, the Disk Operating System, is a means of
- being able to "drop" to the DOS prompt temporarily without
- having to terminate the EZMAIL application; and then get
- back into EZMAIL by typing EXIT at the DOS prompt. EZMAIL
- will temporarily change the DOS shell prompt so that you
- will know to type 'EXIT' in order to return to EZMAIL.
- Please remember to exit back to the EZMAIL program after
- finishing with DOS.
-
-
- Can I Attach A File?
-
- In order to attach a mail message, you will need to use the
- SAVE MAIL option from the RECEIVE menu. Save the mail to
- the default EZMAIL filename. To actually attach the mail,
- select the ATTACH FILE option from the SEND menu. You will
- be prompted for the message filename to edit and the
- attaching message filename. EZMAIL will then create the
- "new" mail message that you may then send or edit. Simply
- press RETURN or ENTER at each prompt to accept the defaults.
-
- Another way to attach mail would be to use an editor that
- supports "merging" of documents. Then, instead of actually
- attaching mail, you would just send a piece of mail that
- had other mail "merged" into it.
-
-
- How Do I Get The Most Recent EZMAIL Package?
-
- To maintain the most current EZMAIL files, go to the OPTIONS
- menu and select EZ UPDATE. This will execute a program that
- will copy from the HOST server the most current versions of
- EZMAIL and inform you of the files that have been updated.
-
-
-
-
-
- MENU OPTION: QUIT
-
- Highlight the QUIT menu option and press the RETURN or ENTER
- key to display the quit menu box (the <ESC> key will allow
- you to exit back to the previous menu or allow you to EXIT
- TO DOS as a short-cut key.) To quit to DOS, just press the
- <ENTER> key, else press <ESC> or the 'n' followed by the
- <ENTER> key to return back to EZMAIL.
-
