  9. The Norton Utilities v6.01 are compatible with LANtastic NOS v4.xx excepting:
  10. CALIBRAT, the park feature of DISKMON, DISKREET, NDD, SPEEDISK, 
  11. UNFOMAT, UNERASE, the DISK WIPE feature of WIPEINFO, DISKTOOL, 
  12. IMAGE, and the write caching features of NCACHE.

  14. Product Overview
  15. The Norton Utilities are a set of programs that provide a large number of disk, 
  16. file and hardware testing utilities for the PC computer family.  It can recover 
  17. deleted and formatted disks, optimize hard drives and test them for bad 
  18. clusters, provide comprehensive system overviews, and allow a user to explore 
  19. all areas of virtually any type of disk.

  21. Test Equipment Configuration
  22. following machines were used for DR DOS 6.0 testing.  All machines use Artisoft 
  23. AE-2 NICs.  Testing was completed using LANtastic NOS v4.0 with AILANBIO.EXE 
  24. and AE2.EXE v2.03.  Machines running as LANtastic peer-to-peer servers are 
  25. designated by (S).

  32. Product Installation Notes
  33. Installation of the Norton Utilities is done by running the INSTALL.EXE program 
  34. provided by Symantec.  During installation, the user can select whether to 
  35. install all of the utilities or a subset of them.

  37. Compatibility Notes
  38. The following features of Norton Utilities v6.01 are incompatible with 
  39. LANtastic:

  43.     CALIBRAT                Not designed for use on LAN drives or on 
  44.                 server's hard drive while LAN is installed.

  46.     DISKMON PARK feature.   Has no effect on LAN drives.

  48.     Norton Disk Dr. (NDD)   Not designed for LAN drives, must not be 
  49.                 executed when LANtastic is running.

  51.     SPEEDISK                Not designed to optimize LAN drives.

  53.     UNFORMAT                Works only on physical drives and without 
  54.                 LANtastic installed.

  56.     UNERASE                 Cannot UnErase files on a LAN drive, will not 
  57.                 work correctly when LANtastic's SERVER is 
  58.                 running.

  60.     DISKTOOL                Not designed for use on LAN drives, cannot be 
  61.                 executed when LANtastic is running.

  63.     IMAGE                   Not designed for LAN drives.  May be run on 
  64.                 boot-up before the NOS is installed (e.g. in 
  65.                 AUTOEXEC.BAT).

  67.     NCACHE                  Write caching features must be disabled on 
  68.                 LANtastic servers.  Done by setting /DELAY=0.0 
  69.                 and /WRITE=0 on NCACHE command line.

  71.     SYSINFO                 Hard disk benchmark feature only.  Cannot 
  72.                 benchmark a server's local hard drives, but all 
  73.                 other features work normally.
  74.  
  75.     WIPEINFO                Disk Wipe feature not designed for LAN drives 
  76.                 and cannot wipe a server's local drives.
  77.  
  78.     Directory Sort (DS)     Can read LAN drives but cannot write changes 
  79.                 to them.  Cannot read/write a server's local 
  80.                 hard drives.

  82.     FILEFIX                 UnZap option only.  Not designed for use on 
  83.                 LAN drives.

  85. Many of these incompatibilities are due to the fact that the utility requires 
  86. direct access to the disk's FAT (file allocation table) or system area.  For 
  87. data security reasons, the LANtastic SERVER disables certain types of disk 
  88. access, including those to the FAT and system area, while it is installed.  
  89. These utilities can be used once the LAN is shut down and removed from the PC's
  90. memory.
