- SQWINT....copyright, 1990, by Jeffrey E. Salzberg
-
-
- SQWINT is a file-listing program written specifically for computer users
- who are visually impaired and using speech-synthesis hardware and
- software (although sighted users are certainly welcome, too).
-
- SYNTAX:
-
- From the command line (the "C:" or "A:") prompt, type:
-
- sqwint [-options] [filename] [/text editor pathname]
-
-
- The options are...well...optional. If you do not type a filename,
- the program will prompt you for one. At this point, you may invoke the
- same options (using the same syntax) as from the command line. If
- you answer the filename prompt with a "?" (by itself), SQUINT shells to
- DOS. This enables you, for example, to use a directory listing
- program (I recommend Scott Stanton's SDIR as one that works quite
- well with speech). SQWINT does accept the "*" and "?" wildcard
- characters.
-
-
- Valid options are:
-
- 1 selects LPT1 as the printer port (this is the default).
-
- 2 selects LPT2 as the printer port.
-
- 3 selects COM1 as the printer port.
-
- 4 selects COM2 as the printer port.
-
- b tells SQWINT to beep at the end of each screen page.
-
- d turns on the Direct-screen-write mode - NOT a feature which
- will be useful to most blind users.
-
- f turns off the control-character Filter, which prevents
- control-characters from being displayed.
-
- h displays this Help file - "SQWINT.DOC".
-
- l causes SQWINT to wait for a keypress after displaying each
- line. If the key pressed is "l", SQUINT leaves Line-by-line
- mode.
-
- n cause SQUINT to display the file Non-stop. This can be
- changed while the file is being displayed (see below).
-
- p causes SQWINT to Print the file directly to the printer
- instead of the screen and synthesizer.
-
- r prevents SQWINT from displaying an ANSI graphics character
- indicating the presence of a hard carriage Return.
-
- t turns off the control-character Trading. When this option
- is on (and the control-character filter is off), control
- characters are printed as inverse letters rather than as
- ANSI graphics characters.
-
- The option string must be preceded by a minus sign. The editor
- pathname must be preceded by a forward slash.
-
-
- Certain commands can be invoked while SQWINT is in the "More" and
- "End Of File" modes. These are:
-
- ? Echoes the list of available commands to the speech
- synthesizer. Sighted users will see no effect from
- this command other than a cursor moving rapidly
- across the top line of the screen and a delay of
- approximately 3 seconds.
-
- < performs a backward search for a designated
- string. Searches may be case-sensitive or
- not, at the user's option. When SQWINT
- finds a match, the computer beeps and
- the new page is displayed, but only the lines
- containing the search string are echoed by the
- synthesizer. Sighted users will see these
- lines in inverse video. To hear the entire
- page, press "S" at the "More" prompt (see
- below).
-
- > performs a forward search, as above.
-
- 1-9 pressing a number key will move you proportionately
- through the file. This may entail a short wait
- while SQWINT finds the end of the file and tabulates
- the starting location of each page. This wait will
- only be incurred once.
-
- b toggles the end-of-page Beeps.
-
- c turns on "Capture" mode (see below.
-
- d toggles the Direct-screen-write mode.
-
- e shells to the text Editor of your choice.
- If no editor has been specified from the
- command line, SQWINT will prompt for one.
-
- f toggles the control-character Filter.
-
- h displays this Help file.
-
- i causes SQWINT to speak the following
- Information about the file being viewed:
-
- file length
- the user's position in the file
- page number
-
- l toggles the Line-by-line mode.
-
- n toggles the Non-stop mode.
-
- p Prints the file to the selected printer port.
-
- r toggles the hard-Return display.
-
- s re-lists the current Screen.
-
- t toggles control-character Trading.
-
- Control - PageUp displays the first page of the file.
-
- Control -PageDown displays the last page of the file. This
- may entail a short wait.
-
- End moves the cursor to the last line of the
- page.
-
- Home moves the cursor to the top line of the
- page.
-
- PageUp moves the file backward one page.
-
- Cursor Arrows move the cursor up and down or right and left.
-
- Escape terminates the program.
-
- Any other keypress will advance the file one page in the "More"
- mode or will prompt you for a new file if in the "End-Of-File"
- mode.
-
-
- While SQWINT is displaying a line, the following keys may be used:
-
- l toggles the Line-by-line mode.
-
- n toggles the Non-stop mode.
-
- Escape terminates program (in help mode, this key
- restores the file being listed instead of
- terminating the program.)
-
- While SQWINT is in "Capture" mode, the following keys may be used:
-
- up and
- down arrows expand the capture buffer by one line.
-
- home starts the capture buffer at the first line
- of the display window.
-
- end ends the capture buffer on the last line of
- the display window.
-
- p Prints the capture buffer to the selected
- printer and returns SQWINT to the "More" or
- "End of File mode.
-
- s Saves the capture buffer to a disk file.
- SQWINT will prompt for a file name (the
- default is "SQWINT.CAP"). SQWINT then
- returns to the "More" or "End of File" mode.
