- This special edition of Sign Friends, Sign Friends for
- Theater, would not have been developed, had it not been for the
- advice and encouragement of Bob Bethune, a person active in
- theater arts, both in production and education. He provided much
- guidance and direction in the creation of this mini-version of
- Sign Friends. He is also the sysop of the World Theater BBS which
- can be reached by modem at 914-986-0697.
-
- Sign Friends (the original program) is a much bigger program
- containing 756 words plus the alphabet and numbers, and a
- fingerspeller. If interested in the full version send 3 blank
- disks 360k 5 1/2 inch and $30 to:
-
- Sign Friends
- 79 Glenmere Ave.
- Florida, NY 10921
-
- To run this edition of Sign Friends for Theater simply type
- SF and <enter> at the active prompt with the disk in place and the
- rest will be self-explanatory. It is all menu-driven.
-
- Many, many sources have contributed to this work. Most
- notably are:
-
- American Sign Language - Martin Sternberg
- Signing: How to Speak with Your Hands - Elaine Costello
- Joy of Sign - Lottie Riekehof
- The Perigee Visual Dictionary of Signing - Butterworth
- The American Sign Language Phrase Book - Lou Fant
- The Signed English School Book - Bornstein and Saulnier
- Signs for Me - Bahan and Dannis
- A Basic Course in American Sign Language - Humphries, et al.
- The Gallaudet Survival Guide to Signing - Lane
- Signing Made Easy - Butterworth/Flodin
-
- This list is somewhat in the order of use when writing the
- full Sign Friends, however the Signed English School Book was
- especially helpful in the production of this edition.
-
- This edition of Sign Friends is written in Quickbasic 4.5
- which is a registered trademark of the Microsoft Corporation.
-
- ASL is my own personal orientation, however many of the basic
- signs are the same for both ASL and Signed Exact English. It is
- more the word-order and concern for endings that separates SEE
- from ASL, which Signed Friends doesn't get involved with. No
- substitute for the living, flesh-and-blood thing, Sign Friends
- should be used in a social setting as much as possible.
-
- Written for my daughter who signs, it is my hope that Sign
- Friends will facilitate more interaction between the speaking and
- signing worlds.
