- Hot Dots 3.0 is a braille translation program. It is designed to take word
- processing files and turn them into braille. If you do not have access to a
- braille embosser, then you will have difficulty evaluating this program.
-
- The full program includes a swell binder containing the inkprint manual,
- audio tapes of the manual, disks for the program and the text of the manual.
- The text of the manual is stored on disk in two forms, in inkprint and in
- ready-to-braille files. You also get a reference card in print and in
- real braille.
-
- The "Hot Dots demo disk" consists of one 3.5 inch disk or two 5.25 inch disks.
- To use the demo, you must copy the software to a single hard disk directory
- called HOTDOTS (see further instructions below).
-
- This demo disk does contain the full text of the manual. These are in three
- files called MAN1.TXT, MAN2.TXT, and MAN3.TXT. The file is divided into
- three sections because many word processors cannot deal with big files.
-
- You also get text files of the reference card in print and in braille forms.
- These are stored in the files REFCARD.TXT and REFCARD.BFM. If you direct
- REFCARD.BFM to your braille printer by using the PRINT or COPY command,
- you will get a braille copy of the reference card. If you are sighted,
- print out a copy of REFCARD.TXT.
-
- The demo copy will not translate or import a file in excess of 2000 characters.
- If you need to manipulate larger files, you will need to purchase Hot Dots 3.0.
-
- To install Hot Dots demo files 3.0 on a Hard disk, create a directory
- called HOTDOTS and copy the disks or disk to this directory. Here are some
- sample DOS commands:
- C:\> MD HOTDOTS <enter>
- C:\> CD HOTDOTS <enter>
- C:\HOTDOTS> COPY A:*.* <enter>
-
- Add C:\HOTDOTS to your path in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file. Edit your AUTOEXEC.BAT
- file, and add C:\HOTDOTS to your path. If you do not want to change your
- AUTOEXEC file, type the following each time you boot up:
- SET PATH=C:\HOTDOTS;%PATH% <enter>
-
- If your hard disk contains previous versions of Hot Dots, do not copy the
- new software on top of the old software. To make sure the versions are not
- confused, change your path to eliminate references to the old Hot Dots
- software. If you have any questions about this, call the Raised Dot Computing
- technical line at (608) 257-8833.
-
- For a variety of reasons, you may choose to place the Hot Dots 3.0 demo
- software in a directory other than "HOTDOTS". Lets say you made a directory
- called "DEMODOTS". Things will still work. You need to include DEMODOTS
- in your path. You also need to add the following line in your AUTOEXEC.BAT
- file: SET HOTPATH=C:\DEMODOTS
-
- -------------
-
- Hot Dots either operates from a menu or from the command line.
-
- To get to the menu, type DOTS
-
- The most common application is to take your source file and perform the
- following steps:
-
- 1) Importation from a word processor
- 2) Translate the file into braille
- 3) Format prior to output
- 4) Output to an embosser
-
- Hot Dots 3.0 contains a number of useful batch files. To find out what
- they do and what their parameters are, just call it without any parameters.
-
- You can execute these four steps from the command line by using the
- DOTS1234 batch file. There are 3 or 4 parameters:
-
- 1) File name
- 2) A code indicating which word processor the file came from (see list below)
- 3) the output device. Use names like PRN, LPT1, COM1, or CON
- 4) (optional) a rules file to be used just before translation
-
- This batch file creates two new files in your current directory:
- <base name>.HD$ -- An inkprint file using Hot Dots formatting indicators
- <base name>.BFM -- A braille formatted file ready for output to your embosser
-
- There are other useful batch files: DOTS1, and DOTS234.
-
- DOTS1 just does the file importation into the HD$ file.
-
- DOTS234 takes an HD$ file and does the translation, formatting, and
- output to the designated device.
-
- If you call DOTS1234, DOTS1, or DOTS234 without any parameters, you get
- a description of their parameters.
-
- For more instructions, see the documentation files MAN1.TXT, MAN2.TXT,
- MAN3.TXT, REFCARD.TXT and REFCARD.BFM.
