- Hello. The files in this archive are for the program,
- ACCSET, a utility for accessing the various capabilities of the
- Accent line of synthesizers, several of which are usually
- overlooked by the producers of screen review programs. For some
- of the options that is quite understandable, since said options
- temporarily impair the normal functioning of screen review
- software. I wrote ACCSET for my own use, found it fun and
- helpful, and decided to share it with others, distributing it
- under the principles of SHAREWARE. (See ACCSET.DOC for the
- details. They're not so terrible.) This effort has been the
- work of an individual, not a company. Furthermore, I spend the
- major part of my time writing as an author of fiction--under a
- pseudonym--so I can't provide the support a company, or even an
- individual making programming his full vocation, could. With a
- small program such as ACCSET, that's not much of a problem.
- Certainly I will provide support through mailed correspondence.
- (See ACCSET.DOC for my further comments on that subject.) If
- ACCSET, and future programs, draw enough interest I think I will
- tackle the creation of some very powerful software, since the
- increasing (Did I say "increasing?") the snowballing use of
- graphics is leaving us blind computer users with fewer and fewer
- usable programs. I have some definite software in mind, but I
- won't mention what--so I won't embarrass myself if I never get
- around to it, and thus have folks banging on my door, demanding,
- "Hey, idiot, where's that software you said you'd write?" I hope
- the informality of these comments conveys the right impression,
- namely that I write computer programs for fun. However, that
- doesn't mean that I don't do the very best job I can. About that
- I am wholly serious. If anyone using ACCSET finds what he thinks
- to be a "bug" in my program, that user should write to me,
- explaining as fully as possible the nature of the bug. If it
- isn't a bug, I'll help the ACCSET user figure out what he's doing
- wrong. If it is a bug I'll fix it. I'd like to promise that, in
- that case, I'd give everyone who has paid for the program a free
- update, but I don't think I can promise that. It's not that I
- would be unwilling, but three factors enter into the considering
- of such a concept. First, because I have in no way withheld any
- features or documentation, I know that many will never pay for a
- fully operational and fully documented program which they already
- have in their possession, so it's doubtful I'll get rich from
- this venture. Secondly, since I am one person, trying to make a
- living at an entirely different job, what free time I have has to
- be divided among many activities, including writing programs and
- responding to inquiries, comments, suggestions or reported bugs
- in the program. Thirdly, with point number one true, I doubt I
- could afford to keep on hand thousands, or even hundreds, of
- spare diskettes, not to mention paying for the equipment to
- handle the task of copying all those disks. Contrary to popular
- belief, most freelance writers are not rolling around in heaps of
- money. I can promise that whoever reports a genuine bug to me
- will get a corrected copy for free. And, let's be frank, shall
- we? Those who never paid for the earlier version won't pay for
- the new one, either, so they'll get that one for free, too. It's
- the biggest pitfall in marketing a program as SHAREWARE. I'm not
- telling anyone anything that he doesn't already know. Yes, I
- will be offering new programs as SHAREWARE, so be on the look-out
- for them. What I'm hoping to accomplish is familiarizing people
- with my work, and maybe having some interested customers out
- there waiting and eager if I someday manage to come up with the
- sizable investment in time and capital necessary for distributing
- a line of high-quality software for blind computer users on a
- commercial basis. Maybe that'll never happen; it all depends on
- how ACCSET and other programs are received. If I make a few
- dollars to put into new disks or equipment, or fixing the old
- clunkers when they kick the bucket, that would be nice. Mainly I
- want to know if anyone is enjoying this or later programs. If
- you're out there using my software, let me know. I guess you can
- send an anonymous letter if you, uh, never got around to paying.
- Oh, by the way, I have been steadily compiling a DCD custom
- dictionary with, now, nearly two thousand corrected word
- pronunciations. I haven't been systematically going through a
- dictionary and checking to see how my Accent says the words
- there, it's just that, as a fiction author, I write one heck of a
- lot, and sooner or later, I come across words not pronounced
- right. Since there is a maximum size of 32K available for the
- downloadable hex file, room will run out one of these days. But,
- anyhow, I've been thinking about sharing it with others, if there
- are others who are interested. It has been growing steadily, but
- I must confess it's getting close to the 32K limit. But, since
- many of the corrected words are verbs, often correcting the root
- word was enough to fix the mispronounced derivatives. I'm not at
- all sure there would be enough interest to justify distributing
- it, for one thing it is necessary to modify device drivers to
- accommodate the larger DCD dictionary, and it takes a bite (no
- pun intended) out of memory. So I'll just say that if you're
- interested in benefiting from the time, stupidity and fortitude
- someone else spent creating a pretty extensive pronunciation
- dictionary, drop me a note saying so.
-
- Well, good luck with this and future programs. I hope to
- hear from you.
