- RELEASE 5.0
- -----------
- On Oct. 21st we shot the programmer so we could get the new release out
- the door. There are several improvements that made it all worth while. Too
- many to list in this newsletter.
-
-
- TEMPORARY FIXES
- ---------------
- As with any release there are a few errors which you can easily correct
- yourself before the next release is issued.
-
- FIX #1: In the C:\ACCPRO Directory there is a file called UP.EXE
- Rename this file to UD.EXE by using the DOS RENAME Command:
-
- C:\ACCPRO>RENAME UP.EXE UD.EXE
-
- FIX #2: In C:\ACCPRO Directory there is a file called README.3RD
- The file size listing for UP.EXE should now read UD.EXE

- THOSE PLACES
- ------------
- One of our customers has completed a place file which holds about every
- place in the world to three areas and many to four areas. He is using it on
- his laptop with the ACCEPT program. It could well become the standard that
- we need. You should continue entering your own abbreviations until we decide
- what to do. It will not be difficult to convert all old files to standard
- abbreviations when we settle on them.
- For several years now we have planned to incorporate a PLACE FRAME & NAME
- system. This is the reason for the Date of Origin and Latitude & Longitude
- spaces in each place record. Any area no matter how large, small or
- irregular can be defined by placing a rectangular frame around it so that
- all sides touch the area. Llnes crossing in the center of the frame will
- form a point which can be located by the latitude & longitude. The frame
- dimensions, and name and date at origin will complete the definition. Place
- names will use Soundex and Alternate name tables like we use on a persons
- name at present.
-
-
- NETWORKS
- --------
- At the time of the first release (1991OC21) it was decided to not go on
- the Computer Bulletin Boards Etc. A few days ago we changed our minds. The
- Demo version is now available on some networks free of charge.

- GEDCOM COMPATABILITY
- --------------------
- We are able to go from ACCEPT databases to GEDCOM format at present.
- Before the end of this year we should have a routine which will allow us to
- come from GEDCOM. This will be a temporary solution until standard place
- abbreviations are settled on.
-
-
- QUERY TECHNIQUES
- ----------------
- As a database grows in size and the number of users, it becomes ever more
- difficult to find out if the person you are trying to enter is already in
- the file. Entering the same person more than one time, in a linked file, can
- be a disaster. Try to enter John Smith in a billion name database and see
- what happens. From the beginning this has been the number one concern and it
- still is. Soundex fonts, character fonts, name reversal, alternate name
- tables, swap tables etc. are all part of this on-going effort. We are not
- satisfied yet.
-
-
- UPWARD MERGES
- -------------
- The ACCEPT Program is designed to have files migrate upwards into ever
- larger files and then share those files in a MASTER/SLAVE relationship.
- Being able to extract, transmit and merge parts of files facilitates this.
- It takes a fair amount of control and cooperation. Large files can be worth
- money and sometimes that can stand in the way of progress. Also it is not
- easy for a person to share his work with someone who never does any work.
-
-
- SEND IT ALL!
- ------------
- Every genealogist has had a request from some relative to send all their
- work. The DUAL INDEX Routine was designed for this purpose. You need not
- send all the pedigree or group sheets, just this index. They can construct
- any type of chart they want from it by hand or at least be aware of all that
- is available. That will quiet them down a bit.
