-
- DEVELOPMENT:
- ************
-
-
- 3
-
-
-
-
- This program is the result of almost twenty years of research and
- development. It is designed primarily for the serious genealogical
- researcher. One of our test sites has now reached over 65,000 names in the
- database with an access time of about 3 seconds on a 386 PC.
-
- The name ACCEPT implies that the program is designed to ACCEPT only names
- that are NEW to the database. Every effort has been made to reject and
- filter out any duplications. This is the heart of the program. Complex
- query techniques are what makes a powerful genealogy program. Without them
- you have nothing but a forms generator. If you are going to enter John
- Smith into a billion name database you had better have some pretty fancy
- QUERY/ENTRY techniques to see if he is there already. Johann Schmidt,
- Johannes Smythe etc. YOU CANNOT HAVE DUPLICATIONS IN A LINKED DATABASE!
- This very serious problem does not show up until you have more names in
- your database than you can remember. If you have several people working on
- your database you are in trouble without this ability to find duplications
- quickly. What about language barriers? Hebrew, Greek, Russian, Japanese
- etc. North America is not the world!
-
- Another problem other genealogy programs have is they cannot merge two
- small databases into a larger one. This is extremely important as the two
- databases grow in size. You will run into more and more file crossovers.
- The same person will appear in the two files with a different ID#. ACCEPT
- takes care of this problem. In a linked file everyone should be in the
- same Duck Pond.
-
-
- FREE TEST DRIVE:
- ****************
-
- There are two versions of the ACCEPT Program:
- The DEMO Version and the PURCHASED Version.
-
- The DEMO Version is a FULLY functional program but it is limited to 1500
- names. If you split your files two or four ways you can get up to 6000
- names. You must however be careful to avoid any duplications as in the
- future you will want to have all of them in the same duck pond. The
- further you go back the greater the danger of duplications. In a linked
- file duplications can cause a great deal of trouble.
-
- Being able to enter 6000 names is like taking a car for a one year or 6000
- mile test drive before you buy. Please think of us when you are a year or
- more down the road.
-
- If you have purchased this DEMO Version of ACCEPT from C&SC Inc. or
- received it as a free copy from a friend, we encourage you to make as many
- FREE COPIES of it for your other friends as you wish. There is a flier on
- the program disk that you can print out and circulate if you wish.
-
- The PURCHASED Version has exactly the same functionality as the DEMO
- Version. The upper limit is designed for over one million but we have not
- tested it in that range yet. Permission is not granted to make copies
- other than for backup and other family members. As long as your family
- members are working on the SAME database you can make as many copies as
- you wish.
-
- If families are working together with two DIFFERENT databases they will
- have to purchase two programs if they want to pass the 1500 name limit.
- The whole world is one big family. With that approach we would only sell
- one program. Just think of the support problem we would have.
-
- 4
-
-
-
-
-
-
- COMPUTER VIRUSES:
- *****************
-
- Making several copy generations of a program does not degrade the final
- copy if you do a copy test. There is however a chanch of someone picking
- up a computer virus along the copy trail. (No joke) We strongly suggest
- you test for viruses before you load any free copy of a program. The
- originals that leave C&SC were tested. One good way is, to check the file
- sizes and the remaining bytes on your disk.
-
-
- SUGGESTIONS:
- ************
-
- Every program user always has a few GEE I WISH I HAD's as they get into
- the program. We have always listened to them and in most cases
- incorporated them into the program. This is the reason we have been
- extremely weak in marketing over the years and unknown to the public.
-
- Please DO NOT attempt to send SOLUTIONS to problems or suggestions as this
- tends toward programming partnerships. Just send your GEE I WISH I HAD's.

-
-
-
-
- PROGRAM FEATURES EXPLAINED:
- ***************************
-
- Soundexing on last, first and middle names with a reverse test on the
- first and middle names. Just in case all three names are surnames. This
- works in conjunction with an alternate name table for names that are the
- same but do not have the same spelling or soundex values. (Sanctoclaro &
- Sinclair) It also searches on initials.
-
- Removable soundex fonts in case you want to play around with some of your
- own theories of intelligence vs grass or multi lingual soundexing.
-
- Plus or minus 50 year time parameter on date searching. All dates are
- recorded as 1991JE23. The date 1991MY19SU0230.01 is in the form Numeric
- Alpha Numeric Alpha Numeric. There is no possibility of confusion and it
- is in descending time order. This is the first use of this dating system
- we know of.
-
- The use of eight alpha character abbreviations for a place (USCTNHWH) is
- in the form Country - State - County - Town. It reads: United States,
- Connecticut, New Haven, West Haven. This allows you to search within a
- Country, State, County or Town for a person. It also saves entry time and
- space. People have complained about using abbreviations but they fail to
- realize what a powerful search function they are gaining with this method.
- This is the first use of this place system we know of.
-
- Each search is looked at as a duplication candidate search depending on
- how tight the search parameters are. A marker file can be switched on
- during each query for extraction purposes etc.
-
- Automatic family linking of ID numbers during family group entry. All
- linking is open ended in all directions. There are no limits. Spouses,
- children etc. This includes adoption linking.
-
- Four digit Base 32 ID alpha numeric numbering system (00D5). We have
- coined the word DUHEX for this system. This saves space and entry time.
- The numbers are easier to remember. Four digits allow entry of over a
- million names. Seven digits allow for entry of 32 billion names. This
- program was not designed with the small time users in mind but it works
- fine for them also. You will notice that all the vowells except "E" were
- removed. If we did not, every four letter word in the dictionary would
- appear as an ID#. This is the first use of this numbering system we know
- of.
-
- A set of user defineable fields that can be changed any time you wish.
- They can be used by the LDS users to enter temple data. You can have
- multiple sets in case you want to use your file for other studies.
-
- Multiple source files and primary note files that can be switched in and
- out at any time. This allows you to keep your own set of private notes
- when other people are using your database.
-
- Multiple marker files that can be used for name extraction from one file
- into another. They can also be used to print hundreds of group sheets at a
- time.
-
- Extracted databases from your main database are Stand-Alone and will refer
- you back to the source database. These can be appended to another
- database.
-
- 6
-
-
-
-
-
- Multi-user capability. With automatic relationship file generation for
- each user.
-
- Open ended linked history files. These can be concatenated together into a
- very large searchable database.

- THE DOS DRAGON:
- ***************
-
- If you really want to unleash the full power of your computer you must
- slay the DOS Dragon or at least put out his or her fire.
-
- You should at very least learn the MD, RD, CD, SUBST, COPY, PATH, TYPE,
- CHKDSK, DIR, BACKUP & RESTORE commands.
-
- If you really want to save a lot of time and effort learn about BATCH
- Files. Learn how to edit and save them in ASCII using your favorite Word
- Processor. EDLIN is handy but it was made by a programmer for programmers
- and is not very friendly.
-
- All this won't take but a few hours or so and it will save you many times
- that in time, money and frustration. Don't depend so much on all those
- fancy but limiting Menu's & Windows with their little icons. Come up on
- deck and take command of your ship.
-
-
- ROOTS BRANCHES AND ENTER:
- *************************
-
- One crazy thing you will notice about those DOS manuals is they always
- build their directory trees from the ROOT directory DOWNWARDS to the
- branches. They think upside down! Programmers are a strange bunch. Spend
- some time learning how to swing from one branch to another without coming
- down the tree and back up again to the other branch. This is one of the
- most useful bits of DOS expertise. Learn that PATH Command!
-
- Another thing they did, by the way, was to rename that age old Carriage
- Return key to <ENTER>. It does not always have the ENTRY Function so it
- will remain <RET> in this manual.
-
-
- THAT DUMB MANUAL:
- *****************
-
- "You can't please all of the people all of the time" applies perfectly to
- trying to write a computer program for the general public. No one is ever
- completely happy. Worse than that is trying to write a User Manual for
- that program. Users come in all ages, sizes and levels of computer
- expertise.
-
- If you are one who hates computers (like I do) but loves what they can do,
-
- 7
-
-
-
-
- then you may have to hire a high school genius. The Kindergarten ones will
- work for cookies and milk.
-
- By the way, we promise never to use the words SIMPLE or OBVIOUS anywhere
- in this manual.

-
- LET'S MAKE DIRECTORIES:
- ***********************
-
- Before you load in the ACCEPT files you will have to make directories to
- put them into. They should be located one level above the root directory.
-
- The following directories and setup procedures are not iron clad. If you
- know your way around DOS you can set up the program in several ways.
-
- You have a choice at this point to use a BATCH File to generate these
- directories or use the KEYBOARD. You really should learn to use the MD
- command from the keyboard. If you insist on being lazy then use the
- following BATCH RUN. If you like to learn then skip the BATCH RUN and go
- to KEYBOARD RUN.
-
-
- BATCH RUN:
- ----------
-
- If you are using Drive A: to read this manual then you can't do this.
-
- You should have DISKETTE #1 OF 2 in Drive A:
-
- DISPL: A:\>
-
- ENTER: A:\>MAKDIR <RET>
-
- The Directories will be generated in Root Dir on Drive C:
-
- Now skip the Keyboard Run but read the directory functions.
-
-
- KEYBOARD RUN:
- -------------
-
- You should be in the ROOT Dir on Drive C:
-
- DISPL: C:\>
-
- ENTER: C:\>MD \ACCPRO <RET> - Holds the ACCept PROgram files.
-
- ENTER: C:\>MD \OURFAM <RET> - Holds OUR FAMily files.
-
- ENTER: C:\>MD \OURHIS <RET> - Holds OUR family HIStories.
-
- ENTER: C:\>MD \OURUPD <RET> - Holds OUR family files after UPDating.
-
- 8
-
-
-
-
-
- ENTER: C:\>MD \TESFAM <RET> - Holds TESt FAMily files.
-
- ENTER: C:\>MD \TESHIS <RET> - Holds TESt family HIStory files.
-
- ENTER: C:\>MD \TESUPD <RET> - Holds TESt family files after UPDating.
-
- ENTER: C:\>MD \NEWFAM <RET> - Holds NEW FAMily Startup Files.
-
- OURFAM, OURHIS, OURUPD is only ONE SET of family file directories. There
- can be any number of sets. To start the JONes FAMily just make a new set
- of directories (JONFAM, JONHIS & JONUPD) and copy NEWFAM into JONFAM.
- Later we will show how to switch from one family file set to any of the
- others.
-
- TESFAM Directory can be used for experimenting around after you complete
- the entry of the Test Families.
-
- OURUPD and TESUPD Directories are used during a File Update run. If a
- power failure occured during an update the main files will not be
- destroyed.
-
- NEWFAM Directory contains all files needed to start up a new family
- database. It can be left on Diskette or loaded to the C: Drive
-
- See: MULTIPLE DATABASES: (01.08)
-
-
- ACCPRO DIRECTORY LOADING:
- *************************
-
- All diskette copies we send out now are 3-1/2 inch 730K. If you wish to
- copy on to the old 5-1/4 inch 362 K diskettes use a copy program that has
- a pause function that allows you to insert a new disk. BAC is a good one.
-
- DISPL: C:\>
-
- ENTER: C:\>CD \ACCPRO <Ret> - Change Directory to ACCept PROgram.
-
- Insert Disk #1 into Drive A: (or whatever you use for loading files)
-
- DISPL: C:\ACCPRO>
-
- ENTER: C:\ACCPRO>COPY A:\*.* /V
-
- Copies all files from Disk #1 ROOT directory to C:\ACCPRO directory.
-
- *.* (Splat-Dot-Splat) says copy all files.
-
- /V says to Verify the copy as it comes across.
-
- Insert Disk #2 into Drive A: (Wait for copy to complete)
-
- HIT: <F3> - If you want to repeat the last command or:
-
- ENTER: C:\ACCPRO>COPY A:\*.* /V - COPY remaining files from Disk#2
-
-
- NEWFAM DIRECTORY LOADING:
- *************************
-
- 9
-
-
-
-
-
- Disk #2 should still be in Drive A:
-
- DISPL: C:\ACCPRO>
-
- ENTER: C:\ACCPRO>CD \ <RET>
-
- DISPL: C:\>
-
- ENTER: C:\>A: <RET> - Change to Drive A:
-
- DISPL: A:\>
-
- ENTER: A:\>CD NEWFAM <RET> - Change to NEWFAM Dir on Drive A
-
- DISPL: A:\NEWFAM>
-
- ENTER: A:\NEWFAM>C: <RET> - Change to Drive C:
-
- DISPL: C:\>
-
- ENTER: C:\>CD \NEWFAM <RET>
-
- DISPL: C:\NEWFAM>
-
- ENTER: C:\NEWFAM>COPY A:*.* /V <RET>
-
- Copies Startup Files in A:\NEWFAM Dir (Disk #2) into C:\NEWFAM Dir
-
- Repeat last two commands and load the same files into C:\TESFAM Dir
-
- Repeat same two commands and load the same files into C:\OURFAM Dir
-
- Put the original diskettes in a safe place.
-
- Don't forget to give away lots of copies to friends and pirates!
-
- Note: Whenever you use the COPY command all files involved are
- DEFRAGMENTED. Because of the Dynamic Allocation of files
- in DOS many files end up in pieces with links that tie
- them together. If you happen to lose any links you can
- lose files. There are several defragmenting programs on
- the market that may save you some problems.

-
- SUBST COMMAND:
- **************
-
- You have four directories that you just installed on your C: Drive
-
- C:\ACCPRO C:\TESFAM C:\TESHIS C:\TESUPD
-
- You can ignore OURFAM, OURHIS, OURUPD and NEWFAM for now.
-
-
- 10
-
-
-
-
- The ACCEPT Program works best if each directory is on a separate drive.
- The problem is most folks have only a C: Drive that is not partitioned.
-
- DOS has a command called SUBST. (Unless you have a very old DOS) This
- command can make each of the above directories act as if they are on
- separate disk drives.
-
- At present the program is set up to assign your directories to the
- following SUBST (meaning SUBSTitute) Disk Drives:
-
- C:\ACCPRO E:\TESFAM F:\TESHIS G:\TESUPD
-
- Boot up your computer and EXIT TO THE DOS ROOT DIRECTORY.
-
- DISPL: C:\>
-
- ENTER: C:\>SUBST <RET>
-
- If the response is "Bad Command" then your DOS does not have the SUBST
- command. Stop here and go to: SPECIAL SETUPS: Below.
-
- Later you will see why we went through this exercise rather than making it
- all happen automagically. This little exercise will teach you how to set
- up any number of family databases and keep them separate. (Neat if you
- want to go into business)
-
- See: MULTIPLE DATABASES:
-
-
- WINDOWS:
- ********
-
- Because this program uses the SUBST Command you may run into a conflict
- if you are using WINDOWS. If you do then you should operate in DOS.
-
-
- CONFIG.SYS FILE:
- ****************
-
- SYSTEM File that CONFIGURES your computer during bootup
-
- LOCATION: C:\
-
- ENTER: C:\>TYPE CONFIG.SYS <RET>
-
- The following commands should be in there for ACCEPT to work properly:
- DO NOT change any other commands that may be in there such as Mouse
- Drivers or whatever. FILES, BUFFERS, LASTDRIVE must be as shown or greater
- if other programs demand it.
-
- FILES=25
- BUFFERS=20
- BREAK=ON
- LASTDRIVE=G
- DEVICE=ANSI.SYS
-
- If these commands are not there as shown then you must edit the CONFIG.SYS
- file using EDLIN or your favorite Word Processor. Be sure to save it back
- into your root directory in ASCII.
-
-
- 11
-
-
-
-
- If you made changes then you must REBOOT your computer and exit to DOS
- again.
-
-
- AUTOEXEC.BAT FILE:
- ******************
-
- BATCH File that is read and EXECuted AUTOmatically by the computer while
- it is booting up. Almost any DOS Commands can be run at boot time via this
- file.
-
- LOCATION: C:\
-
- Later on you may want your most active family files to be switched on
- automagically when you boot up your computer. This AUTOEXEC.BAT can be
- used to do this. See: SUBST COMMAND (Below)

-
-
- BATCH FILES:
- ************
-
- From time to time you will be entering several different DOS commands, one
- right after another on your keyboard. The BATCH File provides a way to
- combine them all into one command. If you learn how to create them you can
- save several hours of time.
-
-
- TESFAM.BAT
- **********
-
- BATCH File for setting up the TEST FAMILY DATABASE
-
- LOCATION: C:\ACCPRO
-
- This file when executed kills any old drive assignments and then assigns
- your TESFAM, TESHIS and TESUPD to the E, F and G Drives as explained
- above.
-
- There can be any number of these xxxFAM.BAT files which will allow you to
- set up any number of family databases. See: MULTIPLE DATABASES
-
- DISPL: C:\>
-
- ENTER: C:\>CD \ACCPRO
-
- DISPL: C:\ACCPRO>
-
- ENTER: C:\ACCPRO\TYPE TESFAM.BAT
-
- DISPL: The command structure.
-
- This will help you understand what this batch file does for you. You can
- enter every one of the commands by hand at the prompt but this allows you
-
- 12
-
-
-
-
- to do the same thing by entering just one little ol' command.
-
- ENTER: C:\ACCPRO>TESFAM <RET>
-
- DISPL: Kills old drive assignments if any and assigns new ones.
-
- If you are familiar with DOS you can install TESFAM.BAT into AUTOEXEC.BAT
- to make that family active when you boot your computer. More than likely
- you would want OURFAM instead of TESFAM however.
-
- If other programs in your computer use SUBST commands you should reboot
- before using them. Or else restore them with a Batch File.
-
- Any time you want to find which family database is active:
-
- ENTER: C:\SUBST <RET> (In any directory)
-
-
- ACCEPT STARTUP:

- The old inactive sets can be made active by copying them into the active
- file. This is called COPY SELECTION.

- total.
-
- These can be kept AS CONFIDENTIAL REMOVABLE NOTES. If kept on a floppy

- MULTIPLE FAMILY SETUPS:
- ***********************
-
- The ACCEPT Program can handle any number of family databases.
-
- They can be switched to active via BATCH Files. This makes it nice if your
- going into business.
-
- They can be removed from your computer for safe keeping without bothering
- the other databases.
-
- A database of any size can be sent to another user as long as he appends
- it to his own.
-
- If you send a database to another person it must be 1500 names or less or
- it will not work STAND ALONE
-
- If you send a database larger than 1500 names to another person he will be
- able to read it, extract from it and generate forms but he cannot add to
- it without purchasing a key.
-
- Full copies of one database for another family member are not considered
- MULTIPLE FAMILY.
-
-
- DRIVE D: SETUP:
- ***************
-
- If you do not have the SUBST Command on your DOS and your disk is
- partitioned or you have another drive such as "D:" you can only have one
- Multiple Family Database active on that drive.
-
- Your UP.EXE (UPDATE.EXE) program must reside on the C: Drive in the TESUPD
- or OURUPD Directory together with the Microsoft Run Module BRT70EFR.EXE.
-
- If you do have the SUBST command and you want to use the D: Drive then you
- can set it up just like you did the C: Drive. This will allow Multiple
- Family Databases on the D: Drive just like the C: Drive.
