- This book explains how to do the mental calculations you
- need to do "everyday math". The math you encounter in the
- classroom, at the store, in your home office, in meetings,
- in conversation, and while reading.
-
- The methods are for doing math in your head, not on paper.
- They are simple and hard to forget. Once you are exposed to
- them, you will think they're obvious. In fact, they will
- become second nature to you. And, you will not forget them,
- because you will apply them over and over, in the course of
- daily living.

- You will learn gradually, at your own pace. There are
- only a few general principles for doing mental arithmetic, but
- the book contains specific methods for dealing with most of
- the difficulty levels encountered in MATH WORKOUT. So, use
- the book to learn how to calculate. And, use MATH WORKOUT to
- practice what you learn.

- This book will help you if you're a math phobic, child,
- student, adult, business executive or mathlete. You will not
- become a math genius. But, you will become fluent in the
- in mental calculation.

- of 9 as "10-1". That way, you simply multiply 450 by 10 to

- CUSTOMIZATION OF LEVELS

- The formulas for difficulty levels can be rearranged,
- modified, or expanded to suit your curriculum. The fee for
- such customization depends upon the extent of the changes.
- If you have specific modifications in mind, or simply want to
- discuss what can and cannot be done, please contact me.

- EXAMS and GATHERING SCORES
-
- There are several ways to gather exam scores. The first two
- are electronic, require a database program (and the ability
- to use it), and there is the potential for students to
- corrupt the data, or for you to do so during the gathering
- process. The last two are manual, are less complex, and
- there is less risk that scores will be corrupted.
-
- 1. On a network, append the Comprehensive History files into
- a single database file. Then, use your database program
- to create reports. Remember, on a network, you should
- assign each group of users (using a single copy of MATH
- WORKOUT) their own subdirectory.
-
- 2. If students are not networked, copy the Comprehensive
- History files to a diskette. Then, append the files into
- a single database, and use your database program to
- create reports.
-
- 3. Have students print-screen the Results Screen. Then,
- collect the printouts.
-
- 4. Have students stop at the Results Screen. Then, get the
- scores directly from the screen.
-
- If you choose method [4], you should set the QUIT BEEP
- feature to "Yes". This feature is a menu item on the
- Supervisor Menu.
-
- EXAMS and SCORE SECURITY
-
- Read this section only if you plan to gather exam scores from
- Comprehensive History files.
-
- Comprehensive History files contain an "exam indicator" to
- distinguish exams from "practice". If you intend to get exam
- scores from Comprehensive History files, you should be
- aware that they are simple ASCII text files, and there is
- nothing to stop a student from editing them. Any student
- with access to a text editor could do it.
-

- One way to check to see if a file has been edited is to look
- at the time and date it was saved. The DOS "DIR" command
- will show you this, as will any of the various hard disk
- managers. If the time and date is significantly different
- from the exam time and date, the scores may have been
- altered. But, there are ways to change the date of the file.
- So, checking the date is not a guarantee.
-
- Needless to say, the computer clock must be accurate for date
- to be a criteria for anything.
-
- It would be a good idea to instruct your students not to quit
- the program after an exam until you say so. That way, only a
- student with access to a memory resident program, or one who
- is using multitasking, could edit the history files without
- you knowing about it. If you set the QUIT BEEP feature to
- "on", you will know when a student attempts to quit, because
- the program will sound a series of 5 beeps.
-
- Alternatively, you could instruct your students not to go
- beyond the Results Screen. This way, you could get the exam
- results directly from the computer. You don't have to know
- who used which computer, since the user's name is on the
- Results Screen. This score-gathering method is an
- inconvenience, but it will insure validity.
-
- EXAMS and NUMBER OF QUESTIONS
-
- Most of you will find the following analysis obvious, but, I
- would be remiss if I didn't go through it.
-
- Since the numbers in the questions are generated randomly, no
- two students will have the same questions. The more
- questions there are, the fairer the exam will be.
-
- Some Difficulty Levels are so limited that all questions are
- almost equally difficult. Other levels have questions whose
- difficulty varies considerably. The more the difficulty
- varies, the more important it is that the number of questions
- be large. In mixed exams containing several levels of
- difficulty, this is even more critical. In fact, on such
- exams, you should probably consider scores as rough
- indicators rather than as precise measures.

- I am not a probability expert, but I would say that 100
- questions would result in fair exams. But even then, unfair
- distributions are not impossible.
-
- If you're restricting the students to mental calculation, it
- is likely the typical question would take no more than 10
- seconds to answer. If it takes longer than that, it's
- probably too difficult an exam. At that rate, 100 questions
- would take no more than 17 minutes, which is a not an
- unreasonable amount of time.
