- Capital Fun!
- Version 1.00
- (C) 1991 Enque Software
- 04/04/91
-
- I. System Requirements.
- An IBM PC with a CGA, EGA, or VGA graphics card, and a color
- monitor.
-
- II. Installing Capital Fun.
- To create a Capital Fun boot disk, first boot (turn on) your
- computer with your DOS disk, and from the prompt type "FORMAT A: /S"
- and press <Enter>. After the format has completed, create a
- LESSONS directory by typing "MKDIR LESSONS" and press <Enter>.
- Now use the COPY command to copy the LEARN.1, LEARN.2, LEARN.3,
- LEARN.4, LEARN.5, APPLY.1 and APPLY.2 files into the LESSONS
- directory, and the CAPFUN.EXE and AUTOEXEC.BAT files into the main
- directory of the floppy.
-
- To install on a hard disk, simply create a CAPFUN directory,
- by typing "MKDIR CAPFUN" and press <Enter>. Get inside the CAPFUN
- directory with "CD CAPFUN" and <Enter>. Now copy the CAPFUN.EXE
- file into this directory. As above, create a LESSONS directory
- (within this CAPFUN directory) by typing "MKDIR LESSONS" and
- <Enter>. Copy the learn and apply files listed above into that
- directory. Finally type CAPFUN from the command line to begin.
-
- III. Program Design.
- We at Enque Software designed Capital Fun to teach and
- reinforce fundamental capitalization rules. Capital fun was
- created for second to sixth graders, and tested extensively with
- the aid of the Lone Jack third grade in Lone Jack, Missouri.
- Although designed for class use, Capital Fun is just as effective
- in the home.
-
- Capital Fun was designed according to Bloom's Taxonomy of
- Higher Order Thinking Skills and Madeline Hunter's Steps of the
- Teaching Process. These principles were implemented through three
- activities, namely learn, practice and apply.
-
- In the learn section each concept is presented as a rule and
- modeled for the student. The student then has opportunities for
- both guided and independent practice to ensure comprehension of
- the concept. Finally, in the apply section, students must
- remember and use all concepts learned within the context of a
- paragraph.
-
- IV. General Program Usage
- Capital fun was designed to use a minimum number of keys.
- The program can be operated entirely with the cursor keys, the
- <Enter> key and the space bar. Use the cursor keys to move your
- cursor around the screen, and use <Enter> to make selections. The
- space bar is to be used during the practice and apply sections to
- score your work. Throughout the program you will see a help line
- that gives you hints on what to do next, and the keys to do it.
- If you wish to quit any section, you may press the ESC key to
- return to the main title screen and menu.
-
- V. Starting the Program.
- Insert your autoboot disk into drive A:, and turn on your
- computer, or if you have a hard disk, get into the CAPFUN directory
- and type "CAPFUN" and <Enter>. If you wish to use Capital Fun with
- the sound turned off, just type "CAPFUN QUIET" and <Enter> (this is
- useful when many students in the class are working on the program
- at once -- reducing the possibility that the teacher will be
- institutionalized from loss of sanity). After the Capital Fun
- title screen, you will be presented with a bar at the top of the
- screen with five selections. These are in order of left to right,
- Info, Learn, Practice, Apply, and Quit. Use the cursor keys to
- move to the desired selection and press <Enter>. The following
- describes the activities for each of these selections.
-
- A) Info
- Select this to access information about the authors, Enque
- Software, and registration of the program.
-
- B) Learn
- Select learn, and you will be presented with a list of
- the 20 lessons. Select a lesson by moving your cursor to the
- particular lesson using the cursor keys and press <Enter>. You
- will then be shown the rule, along with examples. Read the rule
- and examples very carefully until you understand the concept. You
- may then either return to the main menu, or try the guided practice.
- Again use your cursor keys to select. If you select guided
- practice, you will be presented with an example sentence that has
- all capitalization removed. Read the sentence carefully, then use
- the cursor keys to move to the letter you feel should be capitalized,
- and press <Enter>. If the letter indeed should be capitalized,
- then you will hear a click and see it convert to uppercase. If you
- were wrong, you will hear an annoying buzzing sound and see a message
- telling you that the letter is correct. Continue working on the
- sentence until all letters are corrected. You will see a number
- at the lower left part of the screen that indicates letters left
- to capitalize. During the guided practice, you may at any time
- press ESC to return to the main menu. When you have completed the
- guided practice examples, you will be returned to the main menu.
-
- C) Practice
- When you have first completed the learn exercise with a
- particular rule, select practice. You will be presented with the
- list of lessons as in the learn section. Select the lesson you
- wish to practice. You will then be presented with a screen
- showing the rule and an uncapitalized practice sentence. Take
- your time and correct the sentence to the best of your ability.
- This exercise, unlike the guided practice, will allow you the
- freedom to capitalize any letter of the sentence you wish, up to
- all of them. If you capitalize a letter by accident that you did
- not wish to capitalize, just <Enter> on the letter again to convert
- it back to lowercase. When you feel you have done your best,
- press the space bar. Your practice will be graded and you will
- be given information on the mistakes you made, if any. Repeat
- this process until you have capitalized the sentence correctly, at
- which time you will be presented with the next sentence. At any
- time you may press ESC to return to the main menu.
-
- D) Apply
- When you select apply you will be shown a list of article
- titles. These articles apply more than one concept, and should be
- tried once you comprehend the concepts studied in the lessons.
- Select an article by cursoring up or down and pressing <Enter>.
- You will then be presented with the article without any
- capitalization. Do your best to correct the article, applying
- what you have learned to the best of your ability. When you feel
- that you have completed the article, press the space bar to show
- your results. If you have a score less than 100 percent, you
- will be given the second chance to find your mistakes. If there
- are still mistakes after scoring this second try, then the
- incorrect letters remaining will flash. You must then <Enter> on
- each flashing letter to complete your corrections before you can
- return to the main menu.
-
- VI. About the ShareWare Concept
- Capital Fun is being distributed under the ShareWare concept.
- What this means is that if you enjoy using the program, and wish
- to obtain the latest version with all lessons and more examples
- and articles, you may register the program directly with us.
- Registration is only $20.00. To register just send a check or
- money order (no cash please) to the following address:
-
- Enque Software
- Route 1, Box 116C
- Pleasant Hill, MO 64080
-
- Your registration will allow us to send you the latest version on
- disk, and provide technical support and upgrades via the Enque
- BBS. If you wish to use the program in a classroom environment,
- or need more than one disk for any other reason, we will provide
- additional disks for only $10.00 apiece. We feel this is a
- very reasonable price considering the high price of off-the-shelf
- software that in many cases, are of questionable educational
- value.
-
- If you wish, you can find the latest version of the program
- on our BBS at (816)353-0991. The BBS is up the following hours
- (Central Standard Time).

-
- Capital Fun was written with Enque's UltraWin text windowing
- library. The windowing library can be found on GEnie, CompuServe,
- Delphi, the EnQue BBS, and many others. The library is another
- EnQue ShareWare product. If you are a C programmer, it is worth a
- look; what's used in Capital Fun is a MINUTE sampling of UltraWin's
- capability!
