- TOM'S COMPUTER NOTES FOR SEPT. 1990
-
- Public Domain
-
- Last month's issue of PERSONAL COMPUTING was the final one as the
- magazine has folded.
-
- SEEN AT THE PRICE CLUB: Books on WORD, one for DOS and one for
- WINDOWS. Disks with runtime versions of WORD included but you
- have to have a 1.2 meg drive..... WINDOWS Ver. 3.0 at
- $93.99...... 2400 baud external modem for $99.99..... The WINDOWS
- 3.0 COMPANION [book] at $17.89, list for it is $27.95..... A
- PACKARD BELL 386SX with VGA at $1,599.99.
-
- PCTOOLS BACKUP backed up my 1-2-3 program to a 1.44 floppy, using
- the entire disk (even though the backup doesn't actually require
- 1.44 megs.. All the files are only a total of 907K. PC TOOLS just
- ALWAYS makes one giant file taking up a whole disk.). PKZIP put
- them into a 581K ZIP file. I put that on a 1.44 floppy and still
- had room for something else. Guess what I did with my PC TOOLS
- BACKUP directory? It's gone. I'll use PKZIP via the MAGELLAN
- shell for all my future backups. It's easy to look into a ZIP
- file and see on screen what,s in it, extract one or all files,
- etc., via MAGELLAN. I also got rid of FASTBACK PLUS (I hadn't
- ever decided if I liked PCTOOLS or FASTBACK best.) SHEZ, that I
- always liked so much, was deleted too. Besides NORTON COMMANDER
- the Lotus MAGELLAN program has become my favorite utility. They
- offer a great bargain price for users of competing utilities who
- want to "trade up" via their MAGELLAN upgrade program. Look for
- the offer in Lotus ads. ($49).
-
- ANYONE HAVE ANY suggestions as to what shareware/freeware might
- be good to pack for a trip to the USSR? Maybe it should be
- freeware as they couldn't pay for shareware. I'd like to have 3
- or 4 programs on a 360K disk to give to programmers and/or
- schools.
-
- OBTENGA LA MEJOR revista de computadors en el mundo! PC MAGAZINE
- en Espanol! Via subscription within the next few months.
-
- WHOOPS! I had a lot of stuff past this point in the Notes... Free
- disks, MAGELLAN tips, etc., all wiped out (with everything else
- on my HD) while playing with NORTON UTILITIES Ver. 5.
-
- DOS 5.0 BETA test software now floating around. Comes on five 3.5
- inch disks. You have to have a 3.5 inch A: drive to boot it.
-
- I HAD NORTON'S hidden file stuff (IMAGE) on my drive when it
- crashed. Didn't do any good. PC TOOLS MIRROR also flunked the
- test a while back on another crash. So did GAZZELE "hidden" info.
- I WAS USING MACE EMERGENCY ROOM and NORTON UTILITIES DISK DOCTOR
- (Ver. 5.0) just before the crash.
-
- TO REFORMAT THE HD I tried FDISK and FORMAT. Could only get 10
- megs out of my 40 meg drive. Time to do a low level format except
- I couldn't remember how. Something to do with DEBUG. I asked
- around. No help. (My company computer specialist said. "All our
- stuff is WANG and that isn't like anything else." Called
- SUNNYVALE MEMORIES and they filled me in. In DEBUG do this:
- -G=C800:6 <Enter>. Then, answer the questions (you need to know
- how many cylinders you have) and work your way along. Then FDISK
- followed by FORMAT. Nothing to it, two hours (I made a few
- mistakes along the way) and I was done.
-
- THE LESSONS LEARNED: Keep a "repair disk" on hand with DOS,
- various tools, maybe a text file with the -G=C800:6 dope on it.
- Have a copy of UNZIP on the repair disk so you can unzip all the
- backup files. Have a printout of your directory structure so you
- can remember what you lost. Have data backups. I only lost two
- weeks worth of my financial records but that's too much. I may
- have (am still working on it) lost all my 1-2-3 files. (Later: I
- got them back.) I did a backup to floppy just before the big
- crash but something must have been wrong then (with DOS or
- COMMAND.COM or something) as the disk is mostly unreadable. You
- need to rotate several backup floppies in case the most recent
- one turns out to be garbled.
-
- IT'S A GREAT WAY to clean out all that "dead wood" from the hard
- drive. I was just about out of room. Now, after 3 days of
- rebuilding I am almost finished and have 25 free megs!
-
- THE END
