- TOM'S COMPUTER NOTES FOR NOVEMBER 1990
-
- Public Domain
-
- GOT A NICE LETTER FROM PRODIGY telling me I was one of a "limited
- number of people selected to be among the first [on my block?] to
- experience the PRODIGY service." I must be very select as I
- received three such letters.
-
- MICROSOFT's WINDOWS DEMO came on four 3.5 floppy disks. While
- WINDOWS works on a Hercules setup the demo needs EGA or VGA.
-
- FREE WORKING MODEL of MicroSoft's EXCEL for WINDOWS. Call them at
- 1-800-323-3577, Dept. M63. (Demo needs EGA or VGA.) Were they in
- a hurry to get the demo out the door? The first screen that came
- up said, "Needs EGA Adpater." Yes, ADPATER.
-
- COULD PROBABLY WRITE a fair sized article on the ins and outs of
- LINKing in QUATTRO PROFESSIONAL. Getting it to work right.
- Wouldn't have been such a problem if I had started out with
- native QP files. Converting 1-2-3 Ver. 2.2 got me off on the
- wrong track.
-
- ASEASYAS (or is it AS-EASY-AS?) is a nice spreadsheet, avail. on
- this board. The LINK part works well. Use it as @LINK("FILE>A1")
- to get the data from FILE.WKS, cell A1 into the current sheet. It
- took my 1-2-3 .WK1 files with no problems. The macro part doesn't
- work so well.
-
- TRYING TO FIGURE out how to have one spreadsheet to use on both a
- desktop machine and a laptop. QUATTRO PRO has been my favorite
- but the only way it works on a floppy disk laptop is if the
- laptop has a 1.44 meg drive. Then, I have to format the disk to
- 1.66 megs with MAXI FORMAT 'cause 1.44 isn't quite enough. And,
- the program is too slow on a 9MHz TOSHIBA laptop. It's just
- barely satisfactory on my 16 Mhz PC. If the QUATTRO PRO files
- were usable in QUATTRO that would be a solution. My QUATTRO PRO
- files have a lot of file LINKing which I don't care (if it works)
- on the laptop or not but QUATTRO won't even read .WQ1 or .WQ!
- files. Out of luck. QUATTRO PRO stripped down to just the
- essential files uses about 1.5 megs of disk space so you can see
- why MAXI is a must. 1-2-3 Ver 2.2 needs about 293K on a disk and
- does linking. AsEasyAs does linking and take up 329k on a disk.
- QUATTRO (no linking though) needs 644K. Guess it's back to 1-2-3.
-
- TRY A COPY of the new magazine PC SOLUTIONS. Put together by some
- people who (from the looks of it) have had some past connection
- with COMPUTER SHOPPER. The new magazine is a standard size slick
- paper (very slick!) production. Reading is is like sitting in on
- a bull session with other hackers following a computer club
- meeting.
-
- BY THE TIME YOU READ THIS I'll be on my way (or at) the U.S.S.R
- military installation at Murmansk (Severomorsk Naval Base) in the
- Soviet arctic (north of the Arctic Circle.) If we really do pull
- this off, and they are expecting us, we will be the first
- Americans allowed there in 45 years, since 1945, when Murmansk
- was the terminus for allied supply ships (many of which were sunk
- as German U-Boats attacked the convoys.) How times change....
- I'll be looking for computer users in the U.S.S.R. and will have
- a few disks with me. Will introduce them to such high tech
- programs as PKUNZIP and the various PC-MAGAZINE utilities. Full
- report next month.
