  5. TRIED THE  NEW "Online  America" service. The interface is nice,
  6. what CIM  should have been. It  has its own "runtime" version of
  7. GEOS. Went into FILES first and checked out  the keyword  VGA.
  8. Found over 800 matches.  Then to the keyword "sort" and only 14
  9. matches there. I was looking for a directory sort program.

  11. DEAR BILL: OK, you finally did it. You got my money. All those
  12. ads, the direct mail campaign, the "Mr. Nice Guy' offensive to
  13. persuade me to do it your way. It paid off. Persistence... That
  14. is how you made your first $billion$ and the second can't be far
  15. off. Yes, it's true, I just got tired of all of WORD PERFECT's
  16. quirks -- The CAN'T FIND WP.FIL messages, the locked up speller,
  17. all the bug fix disks, the patches. So, I gave up on it. And, I
  18. sure had a lot of time and money tied up in it, too. Well I hope
  19. you are happy now 'cause I'm finally over in your camp, the
  20. Microsoft WORD camp....s/ Your Pal, TOM         P.S. I'll wait
  21. for WINDOWS Ver. 4 ar maybe Ver. 5 before I get involved with
  22. that.

  31. 'way out of touch with the world (where is Lake of the Woods?)

  34. Dear Gottfried: My GEOS programs won't work with DOS 5.0 and I
  35. have to boot from a floppy with DOS 3 or 4 to run GEOS. Anything
  36. I can do? s/Fred in Fresno.    Dear Fred: Read in your DOS manual
  37. the dope on the SETVER.EXE program. The version table in MSDOS.SYS
  38. has various programs setup as 3.3 to 4.1 tasks. Try setting ver.
  39. 4.01 (via SETVER) for your GEOS applications and you will be up
  40. and running even though you have DOS 5.0 installed. s/Gottfried.

  44. WILL THE 2.88 meg drive be the new standard? I suppose it will if
  45. IBM supplies it with their new line of PC's. At least one company
  46. (Micro Sense) says that their 2.88 drive will format 1.44 meg
  47. disks at the new "super HD" capacity. That's a lot better than
  48. paying $8 to $12 each for the 2.88 meg disks.

  50. TRYING AMI PRO... It's slow. Must be the WINDOWS overhead that
  51. slows it down.

  53. AMI PRO Ver. 2.0 beta is floating around now. It has a new "Icon
  54. Bar" (same as 1-2-3 For WINDOWS) that works nicely, just like the
  55. one that has been a part of QUATTRO PRO for over a year. The 1-2-
  56. 3 bar differs from the EXCEL 3.0 for WINDOWS bar in that it is
  57. entirely customizable (like QUATTRO PRO).

  59. 1-2-3 Ver 2.3 boosts 2.2's features a little for you non-WINDOWS
  60. people. .... An upgrade to Ver. 3.1 is due shortly.

  62. DOS Ver. 5.0 finally arrives, on June 11th. A few things beyond
  63. the Beta version (there were 7,000 "official" sets of that
  64. issued). Be sure and try MEM/C in Ver. 5.0.

  66. PC TOOLS Ver 7.0 has another "all new" GUI with cascading menus.
  67. Three WINDOWS applications are bundled with it. There is a remote
  68. computing function something like CARBON COPY, too. Price goes
  69. from $150 to $180. Upgrades are $50.

  71. NEXT VERSION OF WORD PERFECT will feature more import/export
  72. capability. Such as: Transferring files between PC's and MAC's.

  74. THE 486 CHIP FROM INTEL has popularized the speed and integration
  75. concept of the on-board cache. INTEL will soon make available to
  76. OEM's a 386 chip with the same feature, called the "386 Smart
  77. Cache"... It will also be available in an SX version.

  79. FREE STUFF: An APPLAUSE II demo disk from Ashton-Tate. Call 1-
  80. 800-437-4329, ext. 1311... Upgrades from Ver. 1.5 cost $50.

  82. ALDUS recently ran large ads offering free demo disks for
  83. PERSUASION Ver 2.0 but the telephone number was almost invisible.
