- EVERYONE LIKES TO SAVE MONEY. One way to do it (maybe) is to buy
- expensive things via mailorder because you often duck sales tax.
- The latest PSL NEWS (Free copy --1-800-242-4775) recommends two
- sources for hard drives. Hard Drives International and CompuAdd.
- Both very good outfits. The first has about the best HD prices
- you will find. But, it's in Arizona so you have to pay sales tax.
- The second is in Texas but there are CompuAdd stores in Arizona
- so they have to collect Arizona sales tax even if you order via
- their Texas 800 number. One of these days the states will all
- probably figure out a way to get their tax from you no matter
- where you buy.....PSL went on (after mentioning the good HD
- sources) to explain MFM, RLL, Enhanced RLL, Advanced RLL (I
- didn't know there were three different kinds of RLL
- drives/cards). Then, EDSI and SCSI. Very informative and in a
- minimum of space. Nelson Ford should be writing software manuals.
- Then you would be able to understand them.
-
- SPEAKING OF TAXES: Be thankful you don't live in Canada. (I have
- lived there. My oldest son is a native born Canadian.) The new
- Canadian Federal Sales and Services Tax goes into effect next
- Jan. 1st. It is a federal sales tax and in on top of the
- provincial sales tax. So, if you live in Ontario (for example)
- your total sales tax at the cash register will be 15.6% --- There
- is no way to duck the federal tax by mail order buying...
- Canadians who live on the border will be doing even more shopping
- (groceries, liquor, etc.) on the U.S. side. (Alberta is the only
- province with no sales tax.)
-
- I DIDN'T KNOW THAT EITHER: (From PSL). If you decide to partition
- a HD here is a trap: You have a 40 meg drive and instead of 20/20
- for some reason you decide on 30/10. "Below 18 megs your cluster
- size increases from 2k to 8k ..... a lot of wasted space." This
- was in a paragraph talking about DOS 4.xx and I don't know if it
- applies to DOS 3.xx as well.
-
- WHEN YOU CALL WordPerfect with your questions the tech people
- sometimes have to refer to the manual. Instead of leafing through
- a paper manual they use one "on-line" via Folio PreViews. If you
- have a need for WordPerfect, PlanPerfect, etc., on disk (the
- manuals) they are available for $29 from Folio Corp. The PreViews
- "engine" probably costs extra but once you have it you can use
- any of the databases. The WP manual takes up 1.28 megabytes on
- your hard drive. Folio is at 1-800-873-3654.
-
- I BUY TurboTax every year because it's offered at half price as
- an upgrade from the previous year. Still, I'm not too happy with
- it. Problems. Maybe bugs or me doing something wrong. The manual
- is poorly done. (They should hire Nelson Ford.) My son got an
- unexpected $300 refund from IRS last year because TurboTax caused
- him to over pay his taxes by that much.... It didn't pick up on
- my mother's return that she had checked "over 65" and it didn't
- give her that deduction. I tried to load last year's data file
- into this years program so I could print out a copy and see what
- I did about a particular deduction but last years data won't load
- into the 1989 version.... Think I'll get a copy of Andrew Tobias'
- TaxCut and try that (along with TurboTax). Will report on the
- comparison in May.
-
- I TRIED OUT A SHAREWARE PROGRAM CALLED ++NAME PAL++ a while back.
- Been entering names and addresses slowly over a period of several
- months. Seemed to be a nice program so I registered and got the
- latest copy. The other night I decided to try the EXPORT function
- to get an ASCII file of all my addresses. You can guess the rest.
- EXPORT blew my two months of work when it trashed my database.
- No, I didn't have a backup. I was going to get around to that
- "one of these days." .... I'm using a well known commercial
- program now, re-entering all the data.
-
- FEB CAME AND WENT and no new Ver. 6.0 of TEXTRA. Maybe by summer?
-
- I HAVE A MODEM and software that dials numbers. Wonder if it
- could be run as a burglar alarm? Dial my pageboy or a neighbor or
- the cops if there is a breakin? A while back I had a setup that
- sent a morse code message to me via 220 MHz (a handy talkie). I
- replaced that with a Doberman. Anyhow, PSL has something called
- HANDSOFF which "turns your computer into a simple burglar alarm."
- I have no further info on it. The Feb. Additions Disks #1 and #2
- contain this, mouse drivers for 4DOS and two dozen other
- interesting things.... Also in the latest PSL Catalog: Minor
- updates to 4DOS (ver. 2.21), and HDTest (ver. 4.84). Major
- upgrades (partial) EXPRESS CHECK 4.0, PC-Food 4.6 (food costing
- system for restaurants), NewTax (tax program with Hypertext
- help.) RBBS 17.2B (3 disks), QubeCalc 3.10, InstaCalc 2.52,
- ArcMaster 4.46 and SHEZ 5.2....
-
- MATSUSHITA (Panasonic) will sell a notebook type 286 in the U.S.
- sometime before the end of the year. There won't be any import or
- tariff problems for the Japanese electronics giant as the
- computer will be built here bt Tandy Corp. of Ft. Worth.
