- DOWNWARD COMPATIBILITY- I tried PC TOOLS 5.0 to see if it was the best
- thing since sliced bread. It wasn't. Not for me, anyhow. Then came
- ver. 5.5 with such a great upgrade offer that I couldn't turn it down.
- It was FREE if you got it from the BBS but even for those who paid it
- was cheap. Still too big for me so I continued to use ver. 4.xx
- something. Now I have rediscovered ver. 1.xx and it's really
- streamlined. Just 83K vs. ver. 4.xx which (with its overlay file) is
- over 300K. And it does almost all the same stuff!
-
- MY SON THE SCREENWRITER finally got computerized. I went over to
- California (84 cents unleaded gas - SMOG - big daily newspaper (the
- size of our Sunday paper) for 25 cents) to see what Hollywood types
- are using for computer/word processing. They all use Word Perfect 5.0
- and XT clone computers (the ones I saw.) My son has an EPSON Equity 1+
- with a 20 meg hard drive. I was impressed. Nice machine with great
- documentation. It came with DOS 3.3 and GW-BASIC. Has its DIP switches
- up front under a little door, a switch to go between 4.77 and 10 MHz,
- front reset button. Those machines are going for as low as $619 with
- no hard drive.
-
- PSL.... Them again? Yes. Got the Dec. Additions disks and found some
- interesting things. FINDxxx.COM (several versions) is another
- superfast file finder. This one has yet more enhancements. If I tell
- it to look (from Drive C:) for something, as in - FIND WS.EXE it is
- smart enough to check out drive C: and then go on to my hard drive D:
- and look there too. Should you want it to look at a single drive for
- some reason just type FIND/S and it will do that. To go through my two
- hard drives (40 megabytes) it took 2.14 seconds. I know because it
- reports the time taken and the number of files checked. (1582 files in
- 77 subdirectories in my current setup.) .... There is something called
- SNAFU.COM that is a riot. It's a TSR that will make anyone using your
- computer (or theirs, if you have sneaked the program in) think
- something is very strange. A command like CLS might return "No Such
- DOS Command." PATH might return "1 File(s) Deleted." Do a DIR and get
- some funny stuff. It finally crashes with "Fatal Error" then on the
- next line, "Re-Loading COMMAND.COM . . . Cannot find COMMAND.COM" and
- some more stuff like saying your FAT is gone too (it isn't).
-
- I HAVE BEEN USING 720K disks formatted for 1.62 megabytes for almost
- three months now. With SONY brand disks I have never had a disk that
- wouldn't format OK on every sector. I have been a heavy user of this
- system and have not lost a byte of data yet..... I'm doing all this
- with MAXI FORM from Herne Data. It lets you format at 1.44 or 1.62
- megs (on 3.5 inch disks) as well as 720K or 812K on those same disks.
- The latest version of MAXI FORM (also available as MAXI DISK, a
- shareware product) has a few very slight failings. It doesn't want to
- format at 1.44 while my usual setup of DOS 3.3 and a bunch of TSR's. I
- have to reboot "bare" off a floppy or with one of the special REBOOT
- programs that lets you use alternate CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT
- files. Then everything is fine and I can format a box of disks at a
- time. Herne Data knows why this happens and is fixing it. Another
- little problem (though it isn't really, it just looks that way) is
- this: You start a format and leave the room 'cause you don't want to
- sit there watching the counter slowly click off 80 tracks. You come
- back and find that the job is done but you don't see anything on the
- screen confirming that there were no errors. If you had sat there
- watching you would have seen the errors logged on the screen as they
- occurred. Herne knows about this too. They will change their next
- version so it does a little more "hand holding" of the user in this
- respect.... By the way, I could format 1.44 or 1.62 OK with all my
- TSR's loaded if I used DEVICE=DRIVER.SYS in my CONFIG.SYS file. That
- gave me an "external" drive, ie., B: was still B: and also E:, and I
- didn't want to fool with that. Herne will have a version that doesn't
- require DRIVER.SYS, DRIVPARM nor a copy of the DOS FORMAT program to
- be on your hard drive. There is NO CHANCE that you will ever
- accidentally reformat your hard drive..... LATE GLITCH: All of a
- sudden MAXI won't format a 1.44 (1.62, etc) disk unless I FIRST format
- it with DOS 3.3 FORMAT.COM and I can't figure out why. And, that's
- using REAL 1.44 (HD) disks. Maybe I'll know why by next month.
-
- WORD PERFECT 5.1, what do I think of it? It's in a bigger box and
- binder. There are 11 disks in the package. Little changes here and
- there. Improved (?) printer drivers. At least, they are bigger. My 5.0
- IBPCGRPR.PRS file was 2,354 bytes. The new one is 7,868 bytes. Pop-up
- menus but I had that before with PERFECT PAL. The built-in ones seem
- to go a little faster. Long file names... I had that before with
- Extend-A-Name. Now Extend-A-Name Plus is out. It's got more
- versatility than WP 5.1 and longer names too. But, all these add-ons
- take up memory. Extend-A-Name Plus needs 42K if you run it in
- conventional memory..... Funny print spooler: If you send a <PrtSc>
- command right in the middle of a print job the screen prints NOW,
- instead of going to the end of the que.... Your old macros might not
- work. A lot of changes there.... New file format which could throw a
- curve to some add-ons such as FIX.COM, etc....
-
- THERES A STRANGE ONE: When I cranked up my computer this morning it
- hung up ... Nothing on the screen. And the speaker (or something) was
- sounding off loud & clear with SOS in Morse code! It just kept doing
- it 'till I hit the red switch. Anyone know anything about such antics?
- I shut down, waited 15 seconds, cranked up again and all was well (as
- I type this.)
-
- MICROSOFT WORKS Ver. 2.0 takes up 1.48 megs on my hard drive.....
- (This is supposed to be "the answer" for laptops? I didn't even
- install the TUTOR program.) A few small files were samples that you
- won't need after looking at them once. During Setup WORKS substituted
- a Microsoft mouse driver for mine and my mouse wouldn't work anymore.
- Easy to fix. Delete MOUSE.COM and rename MOUSE.OLD (which WORKS saved
- under that name) and you are back in business. After rebooting, of
- course. Whoops! It won't work with a Logitech mouse driver. Computer
- just locked up solid. Had to hit the Big Red Switch. WORKS Ver. 1.0
- worked just fine with my old mouse driver. A READ.ME file on one of
- the disks said, "If neither driver (Microsoft or 'other') works
- contact your mouse manufacturer." OK, I'll contact the manufacturer of
- my mouse. Did that and got the latest driver from Logitech, Ver. 4.10,
- and all is well. The driver is 20K long vs. 12k for my earlier 1989
- Ver. 3.2 driver. That's a lot of memory overhead for a lousy mouse
- driver.
-
- HOW TO REMEMBER APPOINTMENTS: I forgot the first pizza/beer bash but
- I didn't miss last months version. Because, now I have a neat little
- pop-up calendar and appointment program. The first time I turn on my
- computer (each day) the monitor screen greets me with a calendar page
- telling me what I have scheduled for the day. If the next day has a
- 'dot' on it I know that I should move over there with a tap of the
- arrow key to see what is there. A down arrow drops to the next week
- and a <PgDn> goes to the next month. <Escape> drops me out of the
- program and lets my AUTOEXEC.BAT program continue. The best thing
- about the way I have the program set up is that it only comes on the
- first boot of the day. Sometimes I boot 20 or 30 times a day (testing
- software) and the pop-up calendar bit would get to be a pain. The
- calendar comes from FMSoftware, Box 353, Batesville MS 38606. It's
- shareware at $10. The program that fixes it to come up on just the
- first boot of the day is called ONBOOT from COVE Software. ONBOOT has
- a number of options. It's all explained in the documentation. Both
- sets of software are in STUFF.ZIP, on this board. You will want to
- register the calendar (APPCAL10) to get the improved version. I found
- out about these programs from PSL in Houston. 1-800-2424-PSL for a
- free magazine.
-
- EVERY TSR (as might be loaded by your AUTOEXEC.BAT file) gets its own
- copy of the environment. Load TSR's before PATH and PROMPT to minimize
- memory used by those TSR's. I saved 200 bytes or so this way.
