  5. EPIC/OFS, Computron's popular VS and PC-Lan based Computer-Output
  6. Microfiche (COM) replacement software package, is now available with an
  7. interface for Microsoft Windows.
  8.  
  9. EPIC/OFS enables VS and PC LAN users to take on-line data, in report
  10. formats -- with no changes to their existing applications -- and write it
  11. in compressed format directly to optical disks, rather than to microfiche.
  12.  The data is automatically indexed according to the user's criteria, and
  13. is stored separately from the layouts of the standard "forms" on which
  14. they are usually printed.  This "Forms Overlay" capability allows greater
  15. data compression, and the forms and data can be automatically combined for
  16. viewing and printing on laser printers.

  18. The usual driving force behind the installation of EPIC/OFS is its very
  19. favorable return-on-investment ratio when compared to microfiche. In pure
  20. costs, optical disk-based archival is 90% less expensive than microfiche
  21. due to less expensive media, small physical space requirements, and the
  22. elimination of processing costs and the manual labor overhead of searching
  23. and locating single exposures among thousands of aperture cards.

  25. The EPIC/OFS Windows version also increased the number of users that can
  26. capitalize on the data.  Virtually any user with a PC on a network --
  27. specifically those with limited computing skills -- can use the
  28. unintimidating and intuitive Windows-environments to query for previously
  29. inaccessible information, and incorporate it into their work.

  31. The multitasking Windows environment allows the users to search, retrieve,
  32. and instantly display data on their desktop systems in one window -- and
  33. then directly incorporate it into applications running in other windows
  34. (i.e. word processing, spreadsheets, E-mail, or data base programs).  The
  35. data is cut-and-pasted using the Windows data exchange environments,
  36. adding convenience and driving the acceptance of on-line archives by
  37. non-traditional users.
