  1. CAMBRIDGE, Mass., March 30,1992 -- Shiva Corporation today announced
  2. LanRover/L, a second-generation dial-in server for the new Apple
  3. PowerBook. Compatible with AppleTalk Remote Access (Apple's dial-in
  4. software), LanRover/L provides users and network managers with a number of
  5. unique benefits that address the special needs of workgroups or
  6. departments implementing remote access on a several-user or large-scale
  7. basis.

  9. LanRover/L is a compact hardware device that connects directly to the
  10. network. Remote PowerBook or Macintosh users dial into LanRover/L and are
  11. then able to access file servers, e-mail or any other network services.
  12. LanRover/L also provides shared dial-out- which allows users to access
  13. on-line information services such as CompuServe or America Online. Other
  14. features, such as centralized management and advanced security, address
  15. the needs of the departmental network manager.

  17. LanRover/L is the first in a line of next-generation Shiva servers planned
  18. for introduction in 1992. Shiva's new servers, such as LanRover/L, address
  19. the implications of an anticipated explosion in dial-in network access.
  20. According to IDC, Framingham, MA, worldwide sales of remote access
  21. products are expected to increase from $56 million in 1991 to $300 million
  22. in 1995. Shiva's servers are targeted to network managers who are faced
  23. with supporting many new mobile users, all of whom will want to access the
  24. company LAN (Local Area Network) with the same efficiency, ease of use and
  25. transparency one experiences when working at the office.

  27. According to Dan Schwinn, Shiva president and founder, "LanRover/L goes
  28. beyond personal remote access solutions to address departmental remote
  29. access needs. A workgroup or department-level dial-in product must provide
  30. advanced security features and centralized management for the network
  31. manager. LanRover/L answers these needs."

  33. According to Apple market analyst Pieter Hartsook of The Hartsook Letter,
  34. "LanRover/L... provides industrial strength connectivity."

  36. Centralized Management

  38. LanRover/L is unique in that it can be centrally managed and configured.
  39. Using the bundled Shiva Net Manager software, one or more units can be
  40. configured and managed from a Macintosh anywhere on the network, even a
  41. remote location. Network managers can configure the LanRover/L, add or
  42. delete user lists and passwords, and set zone access privileges. User
  43. information can be downloaded to multiple LanRovers simultaneously.

  47. To restrict unauthorized access, security features include individual user
  48. and administrator passwords, dial-back security and configurable zone
  49. access privileges. Automatic dial-back offers two advantages: an added
  50. level of security and more efficient billing for corporate users. An
  51. activity log, accessible through Shiva Net Manager, keeps track of when a
  52. LanRover/L remote access connection is attempted, established, or
  53. disconnected. It also reports error conditions and dial-out activity.

  55. Shared Dial-Out

  57. Macintosh users on the AppleTalk network can dial out through LanRover/L to
  58. access information services like AppleLink or CompuServe. Shared dialout
  59. saves network administrators the expense of dedicating a telephone line
  60. and modem to each Macintosh user, as well as the time spent managing
  61. multiple lines and modems. Any user running Macintosh System 6.0.7 (or
  62. later) or System 7 can take advantage of this feature.

  64. Dedicated, Reliable Server

  66. LanRover/L is a dedicated, stand-alone device that can be easily installed
  67. in a secure location. Network managers can choose to lock LanRover/L in
  68. the telephone closet - protecting it from accidental shut-off or user
  69. tampering.

  71. Since it's a dedicated device, LanRover/L doesn't suffer performance
  72. degradation, even under heavy server use, or from competing loads imposed
  73. by end user applications.

  75. LanRover/L provides a cost-efficient solution. In networks with several
  76. remote users, the cost of dedicating a Macintosh as an AppleTalk Remote
  77. Access server can be high.

  79. Compatibility with AppleTalk Remote Access

  81. LanRover/L is fully compatible with AppleTalk Remote Access, dial-in
  82. software bundled with each PowerBook and available separately for
  83. Macintosh System 7 users. LanRover/L takes full advantage of the
  84. ease-of-use and interface of Apple's software.

  88. LanRover/L's hardware has one LocalTalk port and one serial port and
  89. requires an external modem. LanRover/L can work with any external Apple
  90. 2400 bps or any external Hayes-compatible 2400 bps or higher-speed modem
  91. with the appropriate AppleTalk Remote Access modem script. Shiva
  92. NetManager and FreeTerm communications software are bundled with the
  93. unit.

  97. LanRover/L will be available for a retail price of $699 in May 1992. The
  98. product will be sold by dealers and distributors.

  103. customer - will be available direct from Shiva until July 1, 1992.
