  1. MANCHESTER, N.H., March 11,1992 -- Facit, Inc. today entered the industrial
  2. personal computer market with a ruggedized portable PC for factory floor
  3. applications. The Facit N1200 PC is an important new product for
  4. industrial customers because it gives them a hardened and sealed
  5. alternative to the vulnerable portable PCs commonly used today on the
  6. factory floor and other harsh environments.

  8. The N1200 is an IBM-compatible 286 PC in a rugged, lightweight and compact
  9. package. It is completely self contained, including a built-in CGA
  10. display, keyboard, 3.5-inch floppy disk drive, optional hard drive, and
  11. multiple interfaces to NC machines, printers and other peripherals.

  13. SyntegraTech, Bow, N.H., is using the N1200 PC for local area network data
  14. collection on the factory floor. "We mount them on a wall, put a local
  15. networking card inside and share the data in real time with many other
  16. kinds of systems. This enables us to have command and control on the plant
  17. floor," said Mark Read, president, SyntegraTech, a turnkey systems
  18. integrator for shop floor and distribution center data collection. "It's
  19. good because it's very compact, extremely rugged and is totally
  20. self-contained. We have a protective case that we put an industrially
  21. strong PC and monitor in, but it's not as industrial as the Facit. The
  22. Facit PC is a totally sealed unit with an integrated CRT. It has a
  23. splash-proof keyboard and has no damaging entry points."

  25. The N1200 can be used for a range of industrial applications, either as a
  26. standalone PC or connected to a network. The addition of an
  27. industry-standard LAN card via the 16-bit I/O slot provides easy
  28. connection to a variety of networks. Built-in communications capabilities
  29. make the unit particularly well suited for computer-integrated
  30. manufacturing (CIM) systems, such as a distributed numerical control (DNC)
  31. interface between the network and machine tools for down- or up-loading
  32. parts programs. The PC can also be used for machine and shopfloor data
  33. collection, logistics, inventory control, statistics and editing numerical
  34. control (NC) programs on the factory floor with Facit NC software.

  36. Built For Industrial Environments

  38. The Facit N1200 includes all the features of a standard 286-based PC. But
  39. unlike standard PCs, all components are housed in a sealed steel cabinet
  40. with industrial interfaces, a fully protected keyboard, disk drive lid and
  41. shock absorbed electronics. The unit is impervious to elements found in
  42. harsh industrial environments; it resists water, dust, oil mist and rough
  43. treatment with no reduction in reliability.

  45. The PC's five industrial interfaces provide easy connections to NC
  46. equipment, printers, plotters, modems and bar code readers, as well as an
  47. external keyboard and high resolution monitor. The backlit 640 x 200
  48. display is adjustable for an easy-to-read angle and also has a
  49. screen-saving function to extend screen life.

  51. The N1200 comes with 512K memory expandable to 4.0 MB and DR-DOS 5.0
  52. installed in read-only memory. A 40-Mbyte Slimline hard disk is optional.

  56. The Facit N1200 is available immediately with a list price of $3,489
  57. without hard drive and 512K memory, and $4,189 with a 40-Mbyte hard drive,
  58. 2.5 Mbyte memory and NC/DNC editing software.
