- CHILDREN AND WAR
-
-
- More than likely your young children are curious and agitated when they see
- pictures on television news shows about American service personnel in Saudi
- Arabia. You can help.
-
- First, realize that the children's reactions are perfectly normal. Many
- children their age have played with toy guns or plastic soldiers. Quite a
- few have played video games in which they have battled a violent enemy.
- Newscasts about the preparations for war and perhaps knowing a neighbor or
- someone else who's over there makes the heretofore play consequences seem
- especially profound.
-
- Encourage the children to ask questions. Give them honest answers. Use a
- world map or a globe and show them where the Middle East is in relation to
- where you are. Watch the news together. Perhaps suggest they write to a
- serviceman and be willing to express their feelings.
-
- You can say that war is terrible. Explain your own beliefs as simply as you
- can. You have the chance to help your children understand how important a
- place a peaceful world can be.

- NO SMOKING BENEFITS
-
- If you've managed to quit smoking the benefits are even bigger than you
- think. New evidence shows that non-smokers eat more healthfully than those
- who continue to puff away, further lowering their risk of heart disease and
- cancer.
-
- Overall, smokers consume fewer healthful, cancer-fighting foods like fruits
- and vegetables and are more likely to eat fatty red meat and drink alcohol,
- according to epidemiologist Alfredo Morabia, M.D., of the University
- Canton Hospital in Geneva, Switzerland. While recently working with the
- American Health Foundation in New York City, Morabia reviewed 7,860
- questionnaires on the eating and drinking habits of people in Chicago,
- Detroit, New York , and Philadelphia.
-
- The diets of smokers and non-smokers were dramatically different. For
- example, a man who smokes a pack or more of cigarettes a day eats, on
- average, 20 percent more red meat than a non-smoker does. A woman who smokes
- heavily (two packs or more a day) eats only half as much fruit as a
- non-smoker. While a male smoker drinks, on average, two and a half bottles
- of beer (or the equivalent) a day, a non-smoker quaffs only half a bottle.
-
- Smokers get a double whammy! Cigarettes multiply their cancer risk many
- times. Skimping on fruits and vegetables ups it even further.
- WHAT THE HELL IS THAT?
