  4.     The benchmarks contained here are described in detail in "High Level
  5. Benchmarks," Kent Quirk, PC Tech Journal, September 1988, p. 54.  This
  6. article discusses the logic behind their design, the test methods, how
  7. to run them, and how to interpret the results.

  9. The benchmark programs can be run standalone or under the control of
  10. HLBENCH.  Each benchmark program has options that can be used when
  11. run the program is run standalone to modify the performance of the
  12. test. Results obtained using the tests in this configuration are not 
  13. comparable to results obtained using their normal configuration.
  14. A description of options available can be obtained by entering the
  15. test name followed by -? at the DOS prompt.

  17. The following files are used for running the benchmarks:

  25. HLANALYZ.EXE    Benchmark data analysis program
  26. HLTEXT.EXE      DOS/BIOS/C library text scrolling test
  27. HLWINDOW.EXE    Windows/scrolling test
  28. HLSORT.EXE      CPU/memory test
  29. HLFLOAT.EXE     Fast Fourier Transform test
  30. HLDISK.EXE      Database access test
  31. HLDESC.EXE    Stores system descriptions
  32. TJ640480.PCX    VGA graphics title screen
  33. TJ640350.PCX    EGA graphics title screen
  34. TJ640200.PCX    CGA graphics title screen
  35. HLSTART.SCT     Text mode title screen
  36. HLBENCH.SCT     HLBENCH background screen

  59. Source code for the benchmark programs can be downloaded from 
  60. PCTECHline.  They must be compiled and linked using Microsoft C 5.1
  61. to produce tests that yield the same results as the executable versions.
