- LOCREAD - Carrier Detect Local Reader - Version 1.20
- -------------------------------------
- Local Reader and CDR-Door (c) 1991 Scott M. Baker
- Carrier Detect Journals (c) 1991 Michael W. Crosson
-
-
- LOCREAD is a utility to read the Carrier Detect Journal by Michael
- Crosson. It essentially performs the same task as CDRDOOR, but is
- intended to be used locally rather than online. In addition the
- local reader offers a superior windowed environment with many
- enhancements to make your reading much more enjoyable.
-
-
- - GETTING STARTED WITH THE LOCAL READER -
-
- The first step is to unzip the distribution archive. If you
- are a sysop and currently run CDR-door, extract and overwrite
- everything EXCEPT the DOFIRST.CDX file into your CDRDOOR
- directory. Otherwise simply create a directory for the Local
- Reader and extract everything into it.
-
- To use LOCREAD, change to your CDRDOOR or LOCREAD directory and
- type in "LOCREAD". Note that the local reader uses the same .CDX
- files as CDRDOOR does. The CD*.DOC files are not necessary for
- LOCREAD or CDRDOOR operation and may be deleted in order to save
- disk space. Like the door, the local reader accumulates every
- article from all issues present in the same directory.
-
- The distribution file contains the first two issues of Carrier
- Detect in the required .CDX form. You will need to download
- additional issues separately as they are released and extract
- and overwrite all .CDX files from the ZIP archive into your reader's
- directory. For proper indexing, the Local Reader, (and CDR-Door),
- always require the DOFIRST.CDX that corresponds to the latest issue
- of Carrier Detect that you have. Carrier Detect is released bi-
- monthly and uses the following naming convention:
-
- CD[Vol][Month].ZIP. For example, CD01SEPT indicates - Carrier
- Detect, Volume One, and the September issue.
-
- Starting with the September 1991 issue both the ASCII text version
- intended for printing and .CDX version used for the local reader and
- door are distributed in the same archive.
-
-

- - READING ARTICLES WITH THE LOCAL READER -
-
-
- Most likely, you will spend the majority of time in LOCREAD
- simply reading through the carrier detect articles. The easiest way
- to do this is to use the browse index command. When invoked, the
- screen will look as follows:
-
-
- ------------------------: Browse Index :-------------------------
- : :
- : Department :
- : ------------------------------ Author:.......... :
- : ------------------------------ Date..:.......... :
- : ------------------------------ Size..:.......... :
- : ------------------------------ :
- : :
- : Topic :
- : ------------------------------------------------------------- :
- : ------------------------------------------------------------- :
- : ------------------------------------------------------------- :
- : :
- : Read Extract Done :
- -----------------------------------------------------------------
-
- The DEPARTMENT and TOPIC sections provide two scrollable windows which
- select an article. You can scroll these windows independently from
- each other (NOTE: The tab key is used to move between sections).
-
- Press Read to begin reading the highlighted article.
- Press Extract to extract the highlighted article to a text file.
- Press Done to exit the browse mode.
-
- ----------
-
- The Carrier Detect Local Reader has been designed to be as
- intuitive as possible and most likely you will find its
- operation to be self-explanatory. If you require further
- assistance or have suggestions for future enhancements please
- contact us.
-
- Although the Local Reader and Carrier Detect are not in the public
- domain no registration fee is currently required to use the Local
- Reader. However, it takes a great deal of work to bring you the journal
- each month and related utilities such as this program. Donations are
- accepted and appreciated! Please see the Carrier Detect journal for
- information on where to send your donations.
-
- The latest issue of Carrier Detect and past editions can always
- be found on Symmetry BBS - the Home of Carrier Detect.
-
- (602) 296-2248 / 1200-9600 baud / 24 hours / Fidonet 1:300/28
-
- In addition if you are a sysop you may FREQ Carrier Detect
- Related files as follows.
-
- CARRIER - latest issue of Carrier Detect
