- OzGIS Installation
- ==================
-
-
-
- The software is supplied on floppy disks with most files compressed by
- the PKZIP program (or you may have loaded it off a network host).
-
- The files must all be first copied to the hard disk drive that you are going to
- use.
-
- Two directories are used:
-
- \OZGIS holds all the system files
- \OZDEMO contains example mapping files.
-
- You must use the same disk drive as that holding \OZGIS for your own mapping
- directories.
-
- The installation procedure is as follows:
-
- 1. set up the \OZGIS directory
-
- CD \
- MKDIR OZGIS
-
- 2. copy all files from floppy disk to the \OZGIS directory
-
- CD \OZGIS
- COPY a:*.* (for each disk)
-
- 3. Run the installation procedure
-
- INSTALL
-
- 4. Print the manual ( 100 pages) and the function key template
-
- PRINT OZGIS.DOC
- PRINT FNKEYS.DOC
-
- The WOTSNEW.DOC file contains details of changes to the system.
-
- 5. Follow the procedure in the manual to set up your AUTOEXEC.BAT file and to
- set up the .INI files for the type of video card (EGA/VGA) and monitor that
- you are using.
-
- 6. Work through the manual following the examples to see how to use OzGIS.
-
-
- OzGIS will run on an EGA board, but a 512K or 1MByte VGA board that gives 256
- simultaneous colours is strongly recommended as it enables very fast
- interactive choropleth mapping for maps of up to 240 zones. The VGA chipsets
- that are supported are given in the manual e.g. Trident or Tseng Labs.
-
-
- QUICK DEMO
- ==========
-
- The manual will lead you through the configuration of your system and simple
- examples. You can try the following, but if there are any problems GO TO THE
- MANUAL.
-
- You will have to do some configuration:
-
- The start-up command file AUTOEXEC.BAT will have to be modified so the programs
- can be accessed by changing the path statement to access /ozgis. e.g.
-
- PATH C:\DOS;C:\PROGS;C:\OZGIS
-
-
- The system file CONFIG.SYS has to have:
-
- FILES=20
- BUFFERS=20
-
- Note that you will have to reboot your system before the changes to the DOS
- files take effect.
-
- The "DISPLAY =" parameter may have to be set in the file \OZGIS\INTERACT.INI if
- you have an EGA:
-
- DISPLAY = 10 (VGA with analog colour monitor)
- or DISPLAY = 5 (EGA with RGB colour monitor)
- or DISPLAY = 6 (EGA with enhanced colour display)
-
-
- Now you can display maps using files supplied with the system:
-
- type cd \ozdemo
- ozgis
-
-
- You should start by reading the manual, but there are several tutorials that
- you can look at that describe the system, function keys etc.
-
- The first example..............
-
- choose the option "DISPLAY ZONES FOR AN ATTRIBUTE FILE".
-
- give the attribute file name as OZ
-
- give the geographic file name as OZ
-
- You now have a default map with legend and distribution diagram. The legend
- has the numbers of zones in each class on the left and the class value ranges
- to the right of the coloured boxes.
-
- Type F2 to hide the menu; then esc to show it again.
-
- When you are using a 16 colour EGA or VGA you will find that the map does not
- always change when you choose an option. This enables several parameters to be
- set before going through the slow map drawing process. You have to specifically
- ask for the changes to be applied.
-
- Type F3 - this regenerates the display.
-
-
- Now a second example............
-
- Type F8 to return back to the top level menu.
-
- Choose the option "DISPLAY GEOGRAPHIC FILES".
-
- Choose the menu option "DISPLAY POLYGONS FROM A GEOGRAPHIC FILE"
-
- Give the file name as "HAWDLGWB".
-
- Accept the default polygon number and give the legend text as "Hawaii".
-
- Accept the default (No) for drawing polygon boundaries.
-
- The islands of Hawaii will be drawn.
-
- Choose the option "OVERLAY LINE SEGMENTS FROM A GEOGRAPHIC FILE"
-
- Give the file name "HAWDLGST"
-
- Accept the default line number and give the legend text as "Rivers".
-
- This example uses two files originally in DLG-3 optional format, off the USGS
- CD-ROM. This is a simplified example; usually feature codes in these files are
- used to subset the data e.g. to draw rivers and streams in different colours.
-
-
- Finally -
-
- Type F10 to exit from the program.
-
-
- The manual will provide further information on configuring the system for VGA
- boards and on how to use the system.
-

-
- When you start using the system you should try the OzCensus program as it is a
- subset of OzGIS and easier to learn to use.

- Geismar Holdings Pty Ltd,
- QMDD Box 6108,
- Queanbeyan 2620,
- Australia.
