  1.                       CONFIGURING YOUR SYSTEM

  4. The system is supplied (almost) ready to run on an EGA display on a basic
  5. PC system.
  6.  
  7. You can improve performance drastically if you have better hardware:
  8.  
  9. Various parameter files have to be set up correctly before the system can be
  10. used as OzGIS supports a range of video boards. This should be quite straight
  11. forward for standard EGA and VGA boards, but as there are no standards for
  12. super VGA boards the procedure gets involved.
  13.  
  14. The configuration is worth spending the time on as it is very important to
  15. display maps as fast as possible and to use the highest display resolution
  16. possible. If you plan to do a lot of mapping it is worth purchasing the
  17. hardware (its optional).

  19. Resolution is provided by using Super VGA boards.
  20.  
  21. Speed is provided by:

  23.     . Super VGA boards with 256 colours (512K or 1 Mbyte RAM on the board)
  24.     . Using an extra 1MByte of RAM as a RAM disk.
  25.     . Math coprocessor
  26.     . Faster processor

  28. The other hardware worth having is a mouse. While the arrows on the keyboard
  29. can be used, they are slow.
