  5.  How to port PC fonts to the SCO X Window System

  7. Why do you need the PC fonts on other X servers?
  8.  
  9. Because, DESQview makes a request to the X server for the Quarterdeck PC
  10. Font resource whenever a DOS window running on a PC host has been
  11. instructed to display to a local or remote X server.  Even when you're
  12. displaying a DOS application locally to the DESQview/X server, DESQview
  13. still makes a request for the PC font resource.  But, you won't need to
  14. worry about a DESQview/X server having this problem, all of the PC font
  15. resources are installed there by default.
  16.  
  17. If the X display server cannot provide the PC font resource to DESQview,
  18. the DOS window either won't display correctly or won't display at all.
  19.  
  20. This document explains the procedures for porting the DESQview/X DOS
  21. fonts over to your SCO X Window System workstation.  If you are or will
  22. be running DOS applications to be displayed on your SCO workstation, it
  23. will be necessary for them to use Quarterdeck's PC fonts which where
  24. provided with DESQview/X.
  25.  
  26. To follow the steps covered in this document you will first need to have
  27. installed DESQview/X, and have configured TCP/IP networking software on
  28. both the SCO Unix workstation, and the PC running DESQview/X.  It is
  29. only necessary to copy the font files to the SCO workstation once.
  30.  
  31. THE PROCEDURE 
  32.  
  33. Is the X window system configured on your SCO workstation?  You will need
  34. to determine whether or not it is installed on your SCO workstation
  35. before continuing.
  36.  
  37. Have you installed DESQview/X on the host PC?  It is necessary to have
  38. DESQview/X installed on a PC host machine before continuing with this
  39. procedure.  You may determine that it had been installed by looking in
  40. the \DVX subdirectory for the file DESQVIEW.DVO. If this file exists,
  41. DESQview/X is installed, and you may continue.  If not you will need to
  42. reference your DESQview/X installation guide for before continuing.

  44. TRANSFERING THE PC FONT DEFINITION FILES
  45.  
  46. If you haven't yet configured FTP's PCTCP software you'll need to
  47. reference the green PCTCP manual before continuing with this document.
  48.  
  49. You will need to switch to the \FTP subdirectory on the DOS machine
  50. where the PCTCP software is configured.  This may be done with the
  51. following command:
  52.  
  53.     C:\> cd \ftp <─┘
  54.  
  55. Then we'll use the FTP (File Transfere Protocol) utility to move the
  56. font description files up to the SCO workstation.  This can be done with
  57. the following commands:
  58.  
  59.     C:\FTP> ftp <─┘
  60.     ftp> login: <username> <─┘
  61.   ftp> password: <password> <─┘
  62.   ftp> cd /usr/lib/X11/fonts/misc <─┘
  63.   ftp> mput \DVX\BDF\pc*.bdf <─┘
  64.     ftp> quit <─┘
  65.  
  66. In the above command <username> would be your username on the SCO
  67. workstation, and <password> is the password required for <username> to
  68. successfully log on to the SCO.  After these commands are performed, the
  69. font description files are ready to be converted to the standard .SNF
  70. file format.

  72. CONVERTING THE FONT DESCRIPTION FILES
  73.  
  74. Before the PC fonts can be used by the SCO X server, you will need to
  75. convert the .bdf files to .snf files.  This would be done by typeing the
  76. following series of commands:
  77.  
  78.    # cd /usr/lib/X11/fonts/misc <─┘
  79.    # /bin/bdftosnf pc8x8.bdf > pc8x8.snf <─┘
  80.    # /bin/bdftosnf pc8x14.bdf > pc8x14.snf <─┘
  81.    # /bin/bdftosnf pc8x16.bdf > pc8x16.snf <─┘

  83. ALIASING THE FONTS
  84.  
  85. The SCO X server lets you assign aliases to fonts so that you can refer
  86. to a font without having to type it's full name.  To create a font
  87. alias for SCO, follow the following steps:
  88.  
  89. 1.  Log into the system, make sure you have the ability to edit files in
  90. the /usr/lib/X11/fonts/misc directory.
  91.  
  92. 2.  Create a file named fonts.alias, or take it into an editor if it
  93. already exists in the directory that contains the font files.  Usually,
  94. the fonts.alias file aready exists.  The font aliases are usually
  95. defined with the following format:
  96.  
  97.    fontname    aliasname
  98.  
  99.     In the aliase lines, fontname is the fullname of the font, and
  100.     aliasname is the name that is used to reference this font.  So, to
  101.     add the pc fonts to this alias list, you will need to append the
  102.     following lines to the fonts.alias file:
  103.  
  104. -quarterdeck-fixed-bold-r-normal--8-80-75-75-c-80-iso8859-1    pc8x8.snf
  105. -quarterdeck-fixed-bold-r-normal--14-140-75-75-c-80-iso8859-1  pc8x14.snf
  106. -quarterdeck-fixed-bold-r-normal--16-160-75-75-c-80-iso8859-1  pc8x16.snf

  108. 3.  If you performed step 2 from within X Windows, you'll need to reset the
  109. server's font path.  this can be done either by quitting out of X
  110. windows and then restarting it, or by entering the following command
  111. from and xterm window:
  112.  
  113.    xset fp rehash
  114.  
  115. If you performed step 2 directly from the operating system command line
  116. (and X windows was not running), there is no need to reset the server.
  117. The changes that you made to the fonts.alias file are automatically
  118. incorporated the next time you start the X server.
