-
-
- 1. General Information
- ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
-
- SYSOP 2.00 is a usefull tool for BBS systems running on
- either Remote Access or SuperBBS. Mailers are not
- incorporated as the logfile tools were made independantly
- from the type of mailer being used.
-
- SYSOP was made specially for use in BBS systems with large
- file areas. But still works on smaller ones just as good. ;-)
-
- The idea is to get all files including descriptions into a
- single database . This has the advantage that you only have
- to backup one file instead of maybe 150 FILES.BBS to backup
- all your descriptions.
-
- This has the disadvantage, that aproximatly 530 byte in the
- database + indices are used but has as said the backup
- advantage.
-
- SYSOP is distributed as Shareware. It is not cut down to a
- minimum of functions and has a complete manual. The only
- limitation is that the statistic lengths are limited to 10
- entrys, only one special file list can be user defined and
- the lineformat of the file listings is not user definable.
-
- If you like SYSOP and still want to use it after 30 days of
- trial you must register!
-
- The registration fee is DM 30,00 (or USD 20) including the
- german V.A.T of 14% for noncommercial use. If you use SYSOP
- on a commercial site or use the commercial version of Remote
- Access/SuperBBS the registration fee is DM 68.40 (USD 45)
- including 14% V.A.T.
-
- Then you will recieve a key that registers this and future
- versions of SYSOP.

- 1.8 Logfile
- ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
-
- SYSOP is able to read nearly all logfiles from different
- programs. SYSOP documents every action in a logfile in OPUS
- format. If a bug occurs an entry will be made in the logfile,
- reporting wich file was created for the bug report.
-
-
- 1.9 External programs
- ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
-
- SYSOP use many different external programs. For example the
- various Arcer, Banner and Scan from McAfee. Arcers & Scan are
- definitly in your posession, that is why they are not a part
- of this package. If you don't have them you can request them,
- Banner is not always available and is therefore included in
- this package.
-
- All programs must be reachable through your path.
-
- Following arcers are used and should be available for the
- various ARC-Files that are in circulation.
- - PkZip Version 1.1
- - LHa Version >= 2.0
- - ARJ Version >= 2.00
- - PAK Version >= 2.50
- - PkPak Version >= 3.60 for Files in ARC-Format

- 1.12 Installation
- ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
-
- Make a new directory on your harddisk
- (E.g. 'C:\SYSOP')
-
- Copy all the files into this directory:
-
- Modify your CONFIG.SYS if necessary so that you have a min.
- of FILES=20.
-
- FILES may also be higher but in no means less.
-
- Additionaly in your AUTOEXEC.BAT you must have SET RA=xxxx,
- SET SBBS because SYSOP use this variable to look for the BBS
- config files, but every BBS Sysop will have that set.
-
- That was all with installing. For the rest see: "First steps"
-

-
-
- 2. First Steps
- ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
-
- The configuration (Graphicard, printer, etc.) will be made
- automatically when you go through the first steps.
-
- In parameter menu are all parts to setup your hardware and
- system parameters.
-
-
- 2.1 Parameter settings - Setup
- ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
-
- The parameters are made up of 4 Parts, global parameters,
- paths and filenames, statistic and report parameters.
-
-
- 2.1.1 Global parameters
- ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
-
- Swap Path
- - Temporary path for a SwapFile into a DOS Shell, Arc-View,
- Gifview, Textview and when Arcing Files. If SET TMP is used
- and no entry is made here then the TMP path will be used.
-
- Swap into EMS
- - Do you want to use EMS for swapping? If EMS has no memory
- free at that time then SYSOP automatically uses the swap
- path.
-
- Swap into XMS
- - Do you want to use XMS for swapping? If XMS has no memory
- free at that time then SYSOP automatically use the swap
- path. XMS naturaly needs Himem.sys or Qemm for swapping to
- it.
-
- Swap into extendend memory
- - Do you want to use Extended Memory for swapping? This is
- not recommended because there is only one programme around
- at this time that can use it. If extended memory is full
- then SYSOP uses automatically the swap path.
-
-
-
- Manual for SYSOP 2.00 17
- ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
-
-
- Temporary Path
- - Temporary path for unarcing for ArcScan and VirusScan.
- SYSOP unarcs into this path. It brings a higher performance
- but obviously there musst be enough diskspace available.
-
- Virus Path
- - SYSOP puts all files with CRC errors & virii into this path
-
- External programm
- - Default program for DOS->PROGRAM.
-
- ARC-Viewer
- - Name of the program for viewing archives. If the viewer is
- in your PATH you only need the program name. Commandline
- parameters are allowed too.
-
- GIF-Viewer
- - Name of the program to view GIF`s. If the viewer is in your
- path you only need the name of the program. Commandline
- parameters are allowed too.
-
- TEXT-Viewer
- - Name of the program to view textfiles. If the program is in
- your path you only need the program name. Commandline
- parameters are allowed too.
-
- New BBS-Name

- 5. Statistics
- ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
-
- SYSOP is able to use nearly all data made in a BBS System and
- and put them into statistics. All statistics are made as
- ANSI-File and as ASCII-File, and put into the text directory
- defined in the BBS config.
-
- A phantastic function is that the Upload-/Download statistics
- are made in the form of a Hitparade (Charts) that makes it
- easy to see how a User/File climbs/falls.
-
- Because of this it is good only to make these statistics
- once or twice a week otherwise the changes are not so
- obvious.
-
- For the user statistics SYSOP has its own userfile. Parts of
- it are taken from USERS.BBS. For this reason it is better to
- run the (Top User List) statistic before all others.
-
- The headers for statistics are definable in the parametermenu.
-
-
- 5.1 Top User List (SYS-USER.A??)
- ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
-
- Creates a user statistic, in which the best callers, uploader
- (kb) and downloader (Kb) are shown. Allways use this one
- first because it gets data from USERS.BBS.
-
-
- 5.2 BBS-Statistic (SYS-BBS.A??)
- ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
-
- This statistic shows how many calls, uploads, downloads and
- written mails per day and total go through your system. For
- For the uploads and downloads the total kilobytes are also
- shown.
-
-

- Manual for SYSOP 2.00 42
- ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
-
-
- 5.3 User parameter statistic (SYS-PARA.A??)
- ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
-
- This shows how your users have their parameters set. it shows
- how many & in percent have 'Clearscreen' 'page pausing' 'ANSI'
- 'AVATAR' 'Fullscreen-Editor' 'Full-Screen-Reader' etc. set.
-
- Also the average password length and how many users have
- called your BBS more than once.
-
-
- 5.4 Mail area statistic (SYS-MAIL.A??)
- ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
-
- This one shows how many messages are in each area.
-
-
- 5.5 Mail writer (SYS-POST.A??)
- ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
-
- The mail writer statistic is a hitparade listing and should
- therefore not be used daily. It shows how many messages a
- user has written and his last position in the ratings.
-
-
- 5.6 Top downloaded Files (SYS-TOP.A??)
- ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
-
- The top downloaded file statistic is a Hitparade listing and
- should therefore not be used daily. It shows how many times a
- file has been downloaded and its last position in the ratings.
-

- ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
-
-
- 5.7 Downloader Statistic - Number of files (SYS-DL.A??)
- ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
-
- The downloader statistic is a Hitparade listing and should
- therefore not be used daily. It shows how many downloads a
- user has made, and his last position in the ratings.
-
-
- 5.8 Downloader Statistic - KiloByte (SYS-DLKB.A??)
- ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
-
- The downloader statistic (KiloyByte) lists the biggest down-
- loaders. It even gets around the 65 MegByte limit of RA/SBBS,
- so that the proper amount is always shown.
-
-
- 5.9 Uploader Statistic - Number of Files (SYS-UP.A??)
- ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
-
- The uploader statistic is a Hitparade listing and should
- therefore not be used daily. It shows how many uploads a user
- has made, and his last position in the ratings.
-
-
- 5.10 Uploader Statistic - KiloByte (SYS-ULKB.A??)
- ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
-
- The uploader statistic (KiloyByte) shows the best uploaders.
- Here is also no 65 MegaByte limit so that the real amount is
- always shown.
-
-
- 5.11 Baud statistic (SYS-BAUD.A??)
- ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
-
- The baud statistic shows a graphic bar of each used baud
- rates. The following baudrates are supported: 300, 1200,
- 2400, 2400 MNP, 4800, 7200, 9600, 12000, 14400, 19200, 38400
- baud. Only the baudrates that are really used will be shown.

- 6. File maintenance
- ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
-
- The file maintanance menu has everything to take care of your
- Fileareas, checking and overworking and the parts for working
- on your logfile.
-
-
- 6.1 Reading logfiles
- ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
-
- The various logfiles will be read and searched for calls,
- downloades and baudrates. With this information the download-
- counter for files in database (not in FILES.BBS) will be
- updated.
-
-
- 6.2 Logfile shortening and archiving
- ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
-
- This is where all log entrys are put that are older than the
- age defined. The filename is made up up of the first two
- letters of the logfile name & the date (e.g. 'RA200391') for
- 20.03.91). Using this name the logfiles will also be archived.
-
-
- 6.3 UploadCheck
- ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
-
- In all directorys that are searched for new uploads SYSOP
- looks at FILES.BBS and compares it whith the database, and
- updates it with all new files & their description.

- ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
-
-
- 6.4 Arc-Scan
- ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
-
- ArcScan searches all directorys and looks for files that are
- archived in a different way as defined i n your setup. If
- files are found they will be temporary unpacked and then
- converted to the type you defined.
-
- Additionally all the information files & adverts defined in
- your setup will be removed and if defined your own file
- and/or header will be added.
-
- If a CRC errors occurs the files will be put into your virus-
- directory.
-
-
- 6.5 Virus-Scan
- ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
-
- Virus-Scan temporary unpacks each file and scans it for
- virii. If it finds one or a CRC error occurs the file will be
- moved into your virus directory.
-
-
- 6.6 FileScan
- ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
-
- FileScan compares all entrys in the database with all files
- on harddisk. First it looks at all directorys to see if it
- can find any files that are not included in the datatbase, if
- it finds any these are automatically included into the data-
- base. The description has then to be enterd manually. This is
- NOT taken from FILES.BBS. This function was not made for
- updating file areas!
-
- FileScan then checks the other way round, it compares both
- for files that are still in the database but no l onger on
- your disk. If any are found these entrys are then marked as
- missing and will be deleted next time you purge the database.
-
- Additionaly the date & time of each file is recorded and the
- total amount of files & total filesize is recorded.

- ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
-
-
- 6.7 Creating indices
- ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────

- done automatically every time you purge.
-
-
- 6.8 Purge
- ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
-
- Physically removing all deleted entrys. Additionally all
- entrys that are marked MISSING will be deleted. After this
- the indices will be rebuilt.
-
-
- 6.9 Kill-File
- ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
-
- Kill-File is an easy way to remove unwanted files. It is
- possible to do this with different criteria. You can delete
- files that are older t han X days but also exclude files that
- have been downloaded more than X times. It is also possible
- to run this without a saftey question or you can choose to
- individually confirm each file for deletion.

- 7. The way to DOS
- ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
-
- The functions DOS Shell & external programs are available.
- These should only be used if you have a pretty good knowledge
- of DOS so that it can be used effectivly.
-
- SYSOP jumps into a temporary DOS Shell using ALT-J, it then
- leaves only 10 kBb in memory.
-
-
- 7.1 DOS-Shell
- ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
-
- Temporary leaving SYSOP into DOS. You go into a DOS Shell and
- do a few things like formatting your boot harddisk ;-) or
- start another programm or look at a directory etc.
-
- SYSOP puts its information into a temporary file. After
- exiting the shell SYSOP reads this information back in and
- you can go on working where you stopped.
-
- It is NOT ALLOWED in a shell to start any TSR programs e.g.
- Print, SideKick or the like. If you do SYSOP will not be able
- to restart.
-

-
-
- 7.2 External programs
- ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
-
- Starting external programs without leaving SYSOP. To start
- another program like Scan you do not need to start a DOS
- Shell but you can start it directly. All you need to do is to
- enter the complete name and path of the file, SYSOP then
- changes to the directory and starts the program, if no path
- is defined then the file must be available in your path.
-
- After terminating the program you automatically return to
- SYSOP.
-
- To make it possible to start a program of any size SYSOP puts
- itself into a temporary file. This file MUST NOT be deleted
- during a shell otherwise you may loose some of your data and
- won't get back in to SYSOP :-(
-
- Apart from this DO NOT start any TSR programs.
